For five-years now. Thomas MacDonoghs and Fr. John Kenyons hove competed as divisionalleoms in the senior football championship. In late 2006. the Tipperary County Boord granted permissbn for the North division to enter two division teams in the county championship and you hove to go bock. to 1998 for the lost time a club from the North division competed in the premier footballing competition in the county, In earty 2007, the North Boord divided the 18 football clubs in the region into two regions of nine with Thomas MacDonoghs being oosed in the lower region of the division to be mode up of Lorrha, Shannon Rovers. Borrisokane, Knockshegowno. Kildongon. Kilruane McDoooghS. Toomevofa, Moneygoll and Inane Rovers, The push 10 enter leams in the county senior champonship came primarily otter the likes of TIpperary current senior football panel members ?eorge Hannigan ar.d Philip Austin forced theif way into the senior panel in 2006 but playing their club football with juniOr clubS at the time, they needed an outlet to perform at a higher grade at club level from where they could improve their prospects of furthering themselves on the inter-coun1y scene, Based on a similar concept In both Kerry and Cork where junior aOO intefmediale clubs in a division come logether 10 form a senior leam, the some occurred in North Tipperary with the creation of Thomas MacDonaghs and Fr. John Kenyans (Burgess, Nenogh Eire Og, Portroe, Ballino, Ballinahinch, Newport, Silvermines, Templederry Kenyons and Borris-lieigh). \oVh ile there was on element of surprise for many in McDonoghs semi-final victory over South champions Clonmel Commercials, it was a viclory that the North npp side had been threatening ogainsl a big footbolling scalp. In Iheir debul yeor in 2007, J.K. Brackens and Loughmore/Castleiney were defeated en roule to the coun1y semi-finols where they fell 10 Fethord, A year later, McDonoghs IOsl narrowly 10 Ardfinnon in the coun1y championship and follOwing a North final victory which sow them re-enter the coun1y championship at the quarter finol stage, McDonoghs lost by one-point to Goltee Rovers whO went onto win the fi[)Oi. For Ihe dMsional concept 10 succeed, it needs a bit of luck in terms of fixtures and timing in terms of club hurlirlQ fixtures which wouid allOw pkJyers to become ovoilab~ and in 2009 this sow McDonaghs foil to field in the coun1y series but re entering through the North finol, they lost a coun1y quarter final 10 Aherlow who wenl on to lose a classic fi[)Ol to lodays opponents Moyle Rovers. Moyle Rovers knOCked McDonoghs out of the coun1y series in 201 0 with Aherlow again proving to be the roadblock in the quarter finals, althOUgh McDonoghS did

19 Thomas MacDonaghs

bt'ldge the gop conSiderably in terms of performance with the West TIpp side going onto win their first eYel' county title later in the year. As mentioned earlier, the dMsionaJ teams are utterly dependant on the ovoilobility of players from club duty and despite McDonoghs not being able 10 field for the county sefies during the summer months, the earty departures of sides like KJldangon. Kilruone McDonoghS. Roscreo and Shannon Ravels in particular from club hurling championships facilitated McDonoghs participation in the quarter-finals. Added to the playefs mentioned oJreody, you hove the likes of NIoII O'Meara, Stephen MUlphy, Srion O'Meora, Darragh Egan and joint-captains Don Hockett and Llom England who hove olso worn the blue and gold of their county With great distinctiOn which only goes to prove thot there are plenty of good foolbollers north of the Devll's Bit. It con only be seen os another positive side in the growth of the game in the county of the moment to see a North nppet'ory side plOy in the county senIOr football finol for the first time since Kilruone McOonoghs success In 1975 and In lime will hopefully lead to the improvement of the game at adult club level which would dilute the need fex dMsIonolteoms in the future.
