PRE-SCHOOL Letter From the Rectory SERVICE November 2014 a service for pre-school hilst browsing through the many documents children and parents Won my computer I came across the sentences below which spoke about the value of a smile. They Wednesday 5 November really made me stop and think! I wondered how often at 11am I smile in a day. What is it that makes me smile? Do I at St George’s Church, keep my smiles to myself or share them with others? Would my smile make a difference to someone I shared it with? Do I put more effort into my smile or Langton Matravers my frown. Parents and carers welcome I looked up smiling on the Internet and found some very good reasons to smile. Apparently smiling can make us feel happy even when we are not! It turns out that smiling sends a message to the brain that you’re happy. And when you’re happy, your body pumps out all kinds of feel-good endorphins. The Dubber is the I wonder if you remember the song “When you’re smilin’, the whole world smiles with you”? Research shows that smiling is contagious. Even just seeing a mouthpiece of the Parishes friend smile can activate the muscles in your face to make that same expres- of the Purbeck Hills sion, without you even being aware that you are doing it. It is thought that smiling may help to reduce symptoms associated with anxiety. When a smile St James’, Kingston signals to the brain that you’re feeling happy (even though you’re not really St George’s, Langton Matravers feeling happy...yet), the body will usually slow its breathing and heart rate. St Nicholas of Myra, Smiling can lead to laughter, and this in its turn can become a mini workout Worth Matravers that burns calories and works the abs. Laughter also helps blood flow, lowers with Harmans Cross blood sugar levels, reduces stress and improves sleep. It may also raise the level The Chapel of St Aldhelm’s Head of infection-fighting antibodies in the body, which helps boost your immune system. It would seem that smiling can be very good for our well being. Priest-in-charge However great the value of a smile can be to the individual smiling, the The Reverend Gaynor Burrett value of a smile to another person is immeasurable! A smile can say so much that words can’t. It can convey understanding, communicate compassion and The Rectory support, it can weave an atmosphere of well-being, it can foster the secrecy of a St George’s Close shared experience or memory, and it is both priceless and beyond price. I hope Langton Matravers you enjoy the verses below. Swanage, BH19 3HZ A Smile - Anon (01929 421179 A Smile Costs Nothing, but gives much. 8 [email protected] It enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give.
