Anne Pratt. The Ferns of Great Britain and their allies the Club-Mosses, Pepperworts and Horsetails. London: The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, 1855. 1st Edition. A good copy with 41 colour printed plates of ferns. Anne Pratt was one of the few women authors who were able to publish under their own name. She illustrated and wrote a number of works on plants, and also birds. Her work was considered of lesser merit than that of her male counterparts, however she was extremely popular as a writer and introduced many to the pleasures of plant hunting and identification. This copy is undated but probably 1855 - there is a signature showing the book was purchased in 1857. The binding looks like it has been chewed by someone's hound and it is also showing a lot of cloth wear to the spine. The contents, however, are extremely clean with each plate tissue-guarded. One owner was clearly a fern enthusiast because there are a number of scholarly annotations and a few pressed ferns had to be removed from the book. Good. Decorative cloth. (732) £50.00

Sir William Jardine. The Birds of Great Britain and Ireland. Vol I: Birds of Prey; The Naturalist's Library Ornithology. London : W H Allen and Co, circa 1885. 5th edition. A later reprint of the Birds of Prey volume from the Naturalist's Library. The book was originally published by W H Lizars and was one of a series published between 1834 and 1843. The engraved plates were extremely high quality and were hand coloured with great accuracy. There were 4 volumes covering British birds of which this is the first. It is complete in itself and includes: frontispiece portrait; vignette title; plain title; contents; memoir and text with 34 plates. The binding is somewhat worn and shaken. There is a prize bookplate of St Silas Men's Night School from 1887 to the front endpaper. Contents shaken - generally clean but with some spotting (foxing and occasional ink spots) and the odd mark. Signature to rear endpaper. Fair. Decorative cloth. (720) £35.00

Thomas Pennant. Introduction to Arctic Zoology (2 of 3 volumes). [Introduction volume written for 2nd edition, plus Vol I. Vol II lacking]. London: Robert Faulder , 1792. 2nd edition. A fair set of the first 2 volumes from the 2nd edition of Arctic Zoology. This includes the Orkney and Shetland sections which are part of the introductory volume. In original half morocco bindings with the stamp of the Royal College of Surgeons of England to the spines, and repeated on the title pages. The bindings are sound but the leather is very scuffed and rubbed. The buckram cloth is also scuffed with a little staining. Both volumes have an old library label on the front boards. Internally the contents are complete apart from a dedication in the introduction, but the large folding map has been bound into the wrong volume (the tie for it can still be seen in the introductory volume). The paper is quite toned, particularly at the top margin where is there is marking from being in a sooty atmosphere. Contents: Introductory volume - frontispiece; title; advert; plate list; text pp i - cccxxxiv with plates I - VI; exports lists 2 pp; Index 6pp. Vol I - title with moose vignette; folding map; text in sections covering Quadrupeds and Birds with half titles pp 1- 376 with plates VII - XIII. The Orkney and Shetland sections draws on work by the Rev George Low. Although Pennant does not give credit for Low's work in the advertisement section - where he thanks those who contributed - he does in the Plate list as follows: 'For the drawings from which these Antiquities were engraven, I am indebted to the Reverend Mr Low, Minister of Birsay in Orkney, who, at my request, made the voyage of the Orkney and Schetland Isles in 1778. He hath prepared his journal for the press; it is to be hoped, that the liberality of the public will enable him to give this addition to my labors, which will complete the acount of the northern part of the British dominions'. W Swaysland, R Kearton. Familiar Wild Birds; Series I, II, III & IV. London, Paris, New York: Cassell & Company Limited , 1883. 1st Edition. A good to very good copy of the full work by W Swaysland, with sections on eggs in each volume written by R Kearton. In typical late Victorian decorative cloth binding with bevelled edges to boards and use of gilt decoration. Each book has 40 colour printed plates, mostly by Thorburn, of which 4 are of eggs. There is a sad note in the final volume saying that the final volume contains more examples of birds which are 'familiar' no longer. The writer hoped that perhaps the publicity generated through the books might lead to better conservation of our native birds. The bindings all have wear to corners and edges and tops and bottoms of spines. They are all very clean. Internally contents are complete and the plates all have tissue guards. There is some foxing (light brown spotting), more prevalent in the first 2 volumes and, generally most noticeable in the margins - particularly the top margin. The spotting is quite common in books of this date and with this paper. Tops of books are more affected generally through the impact of coal or wood fires and the resulting soot in the atmosphere. All volumes have a publisher's catalogue at the rear and the final volume contains the index. The second volume has a small repaired edge tear to the plate of the Swift. Good. Original cloth.
