Tolkien and the Morality of Monstrosity Christina Fawcett Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of PhD College of Arts School of Critical Studies English Literature University of Glasgow February 2014 © Christina Fawcett, 2014 ii Abstract This thesis asserts that J.R.R. Tolkien recreates Beowulf for the twentieth century. His 1936 lecture, ‘Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics’ sets the tone not only for twentieth century criticism of the text, but also Tolkien’s own fictional project: creating an imagined world in which ‘new Scripture and old tradition touched and ignited’ (‘B: M&C’ 26). At the core of his analysis of Beowulf, and at the core of his own Middle-earth, are the monsters. He creates creatures that are an ignition of past and present, forming characters that defy allegory and simple moral categorization.

This topic fi rst appealed to me because it provides a manageable approach to the canon. The thirty-seven plays, one hundred and fi fty-four sonnets, and other poems, along with a mountain of criticism about these works can overwhelm a reader. However, the subject of gemstones offers a narrow focus that is quite manageable. Another reason why this topic appealed to me is that it provides a special insight into Shakespeare’s art.

SWINBURNE’S THE TALE OF BALEN : AN EDITION WITH CRITICAL COMMENTARY A Dissertation Presented for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree The University of Mississippi Warren Hill Kelly June 2011 Copyrighted in 2011 by Warren Hill Kelly All rights reserved ABSTRACT Warren Hill Kelly’s Swinburne’s The Tale of Balen : an Edition with Critical Commentary comprises a variorum-like edition of the poem that records all variances of the poem evident in its manuscript through its first and second editions, Chatto & Windus 1896 and 1904, or those editions produced during the poet’s lifetime and therefore potentially bearing evidence of his editorial input. The edition forms as its basis the poet’s final intention expressed in the manuscript, and notes all alterations within the manuscript and the first two published editions, and by coupling the edition’s text with the notations pertaining to the manuscript, readers have access to, in effect, a transcription of the poem’s manuscript.
