Feature on and its Manor House Court Lodge

Udimore and Its Manor House Court Lodge

The village of Udimore is located approximately 8 miles north-east of Hastings and straddles the ridge to the west of town of Rye. It is bounded by the rivers Tillingham to the north and the Brede to the south. There is no factual evidence for the presence of Romans in the parish but it is thought that a Roman track way ran along the ridge from Rye toward iron works in , in the Heathfield and areas. A great proportion of the parish in the river valleys was ‘inned’ before the 14th century and there are a number of sunken routes that lead down to the ‘old shoreline’ of the valleys ideal for smuggling activities.

The village’s boundaries have altered over the years; following the Boundary Act of 1876 detached parts of other parishes existed inside the village such as the hamlet of Cockmarling containing at the time six houses was absorbed into Udimore. In 1934 (under the East Review Order) ‘Little Udimore’ (cited at the west end of the parish of Brede) was absorbed in the parishes of Brede and , whistled portions of Brede and were incorporated into Udimore. In 1958 the parish boundary between Udimore and Brede were moved further west, to include the area up to Cold Harbour.

The village’s inhabitants live either in scattered farmsteads on tracks or lanes running off the ridge or in small collections of houses along the ‘main’ road (B2089) which winds its way through the village from the crossroads with the (A28) at Broad Oak, Brede eastwards towards Rye.

Notable settlements include the brick and tile hung farmhouse at Billingham in the Tillingham valley, which dates back to the 16th Century and Pound House which is opposite the lane leading to the parish church is of 15th Century origin. Further to the east of the village overlooks the Brede valley is Knellstone, the main block of farmhouse dates back to the 15th Century. In the 17th Century it was the home of the Freebody family. Parish records show that the family paid taxes in the village since 1327. In the 19th Century in addition to the main landed proprietors at farm such as Billingham and Knellstone there were a number of small tenanted farms some less than 20 acres with the name such as: Houster, Jordans, Stocks, Lonehams, Schoolhouse, Roadend, Nicholls, Marshalls, Whitemans and Fagg. The 1838 tithe map list twenty-five farms in the village, these today have been absorbed into larger farms.

Other noticeable estate houses in the village include ‘The Hammonds’ a late 17th century house and ‘Parsonage (Place)’.

The parish church of St. Mary is built of local stone and rubble with limestone dressing and with tiled roofs. Parts of the nave date from ca. 1180, the chancel and tower were built about 1230.

Fifty years ago the village could boast of two pubic houses, two shops (including a Post Office) a primary school, a garage, a Methodist Chapel. There were a cricket, football and other social clubs within the village. Villagers were served by an hourly bus service to Rye and Hastings (with a half-hour service during the summer). Unfortunately the village lost its primary school in 1971, today only the two public houses the ‘Plough’ at Cockmarling and the ‘Kings Head’ remain in business.

Notable past residences of the village include comedian, writer and actor Spike Milligan who lived at Dumb Women’s Lane for a number of years until his death in 2002 and the child author Monica Edwards who witnessed the capsizing of the Mary Stanford lifeboat in 1928. Spencer Whiteman a member of the smuggling Gang who was convicted for murder at the Battle of Sidley Green and who sentence of death was commuted transported for life to Australia in 1831 was born at Stocks, Udimore on the 11th December 1800.

Before the Norman Conquest the manor of Udimore was held by Algar of the Earl Goodwin and assessed at 6 hides. [A hide was a variable measurement of land but was approximately the area (ca. 120 acres) that one oxen team could plough in one year - thus 6 hides = 720 acres]. In the 1086 Udimore was listed in the doomsday book as being part of the hundred of Babinrerode (later called Gostow).

Following the invasion the conquered Saxon landowners were replaced by the Norman knights, the Count of Eu in Normandy was given the and Reinbert a Norman Earl was put in charge as the Sheriff of Hastings, he was the founder of the Echingham family.

The King Edward I was a frequent visitor and probably stayed at Udimore for short periods on several occasions when overseeing the foundation of the new town of . In 1295 Sir William de Echingham obtained a grant of free warren for his Manor of Udimore, perhaps as some return for hospitality extended to King Edward I at the Manor house which stood on or near the site of building latterly known as Court Lodge.

The Echingham family still held the Manor fifty years later, in August 1350 Edward III and Queen Philippa stayed there and witnessing the Battle of Winchelsea on the 29th August 1350 when the navy of the Cinque Ports defeated the Spanish. After the battle it is documented that “the King, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Lancaster and the Earl Richmond took horse and galloped of too Wm. de Echingham’s manor house and passed the night in revellery with the Queen and her ladies”, who according to the chronicler Froissart had followed events from the hills overlooking the sea. This was a different building to that the manor house known as ‘Court Lodge’, which dates to the mid-15th Century.

By the 14th Century the manor had only 8 oxen to pull ploughs, horses and pigs, the principle crop was oats. Most of the tenants were of free condition so the man income for the manor came from rent. In the 1360s Sir William Echingham tried to improve agricultural productivity, however high wages (labour shortages due to the Black Death (1348-9) and inundation by the sea hampered productivity on land in the valleys.

The last male of the Echingham family, Sir Thomas de Echingham died on 20th January 1482 and was buried at , his daughter married Sir John Elrington. Sir John Elrington play a considerable part in court life, holding the Office of Clerk of Hanaper in Chancery, Justice of Sewers, successively Clerk of the Household and Treasurer of the Household to Edward IV and his ill-fated son Edward V. It was while he was the Treasurer of the Household he obtained from Edward IV a licence to crenellate his manors of Dixthern (Dixter at ) and Udeymere (Udimore) as well as a grant of free warren and permission to form a Park was granted on the 15th August 1479.

The dry moat was intended to encompass St. Mary‘s Church and the manor house of Court Lodge. Today only two areas exist, an area north of the Church has an average depth of 1.0 - 0 m with a partly dry pond within it banks, The other part is the area east and south of the site of the old Court Lodge manor building and behind the farm’s (now converted in to a residually house) it can be described as being under close scrub with an average depth of 1.0 m. The former line has been overlaid by buildings and farmland of the dry moat. Whether the moat was completed, or with the passage of time has been filled in open to question.

The Manor of Udimore passed to Sir John Elrington’s son Edward who held the post of Chief Butler in the household of Edward V. In 1536, two years before his death, he disposed of the Manor of Udimore to Sir Andrew Windsor Kt., Lord Windsor served in France with Henry VIII at the Battle of the Spurs and died in 1543. It remained in the Windsor household until it passed to Thomas Bromfeild (variously spelt: Bromfield, Bromfield, Bromfeld) around 1600.

In 1723-4 Court Lodge passed out of the Bromfeild family and was sold to the Hon. Spencer Compton (1673-1743), (latterly the 1st Earl of Wilmington). Spencer Compton was the third son on of the 3rd Earl of Northampton and played a prominent role in the political life during the reign of George II. He was elected as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1715 to 1727 but considered not to be a man of great ability. To remove him from the House of Commons he was ‘awarded’ a peerage as Baron Wilmington in 1728. He was considered Britain’s second Prime Minister after Robert Walpole from 1742 to his death at the aged of 70 in 1743. Compton did not marry his estates passed by will to his brother’s George Compton family’s line. George’s youngest son was the Hon. Charles Compton, whose eldest son; also, Charles (1737-1763) was the 7th Earl of Northampton. Charles only child was Lady Elizabeth Compton who married on the 26th February 1782 Lord George Augustus Henry Cavendish (created the Earl of Burlington in 1831) and the ancestor of the ducal house of Devonshire. The Manor of Udimore remained in the Cavendish family until 1843 when it was sold in 1843 by Elizabeth and George grandson William Earl of Burlington to Thomas Cooper Langford, of Parsonage Farm, Udimore. Thomas Cooper Longford died unmarried two years latter in 1845. On his death the ownership of the manor passed his brother John Langford and from him to Thomas Fredrick Langford.

From the end of the 17th century when the manor house was converted into labourer’s tenements the building’s condition steadily depreciate. The manor building consisted of the main galley running from east to west. At the eastern end of the ‘galley’ there was a wing running from north to south. A second wing ran south from a centre point of the gallery forming a courtyard with the eastern wing.

In 1881 Thomas Frederick Langford sold the Lordship of the Manor of Udimore and associated estate of approximately 1,600 acres in the parishes of: Udimore, Brede, , , , East Guildford in Sussex, and in the parishes of Brookland and Brenzett in . The sale was undertaken by Merrrs Jas C Vilder, son & Clements were held by auction at the Castle Hotel, Hastings on the 8th October 1881. The Lordship of the Manor of Udimore was sold to Henry Edward Paine and Edward Brettell of Chertsey. Mr Brettell died in 1902 and Mr Paine on the 20th January 1918. The title as ‘Ladies of the Manor’ passed to Mrs Emma Elizabeth Freeman, of Chertsey and Mrs Clara Freeman, of Canterbury Mr Pain’s executrices who were ladies of the Manor in 1920. The title was sold to Mr F. H. Chapman in 1921 and in turn to Mr John E. Ray in 1924.

Court Lodge Farm (together with Cold Harbour Farm) totalling around 448 acres, and which included the Manor House, described as a Capital House of two tenements that could be readily converted in the substantial Farm House of twelve rooms was listed as Lot 3 in the sale. It was brought by Mr Robert Kenward of the ‘Hammonds’, Udimore.

Court Lodge in the late 1800s

During the 1800s the building was used as tenements for agricultural workers. A farm of the size of Court Lodge was likely to have employed 20 to 30 workers. The 1841 and 1851 censuses list six families of agricultural workers inhabiting the Court Lodge and were home to thirty-nine men, women and children. In the 1861 census it is home to nine families and in 1871 to ten families, both listed to have forty-one inhabitants. As a result of the deterioration of the building by 1881 the number of households had reduced to seven with a total thirty-one inhabitants and by 1891 and 1901 there number of households was reduced further to four with the number of around twenty occupants.

Families living of Court Lodge in the second half of the 19th Century together with the occupations of the head of the household are summarised in the following Table. (Details listed in the 1841 to 1911 censuses are given in the Tables below).

One of those families was that of James ‘Jim’ Cooper who was born ca. 1817 at Beckley. James was a ‘shepherd’ on Court Lodge Farm in the 1870 to 1890s.

James Cooper a Shepherd who lived at Court Lodge on the late 19th Century

In the 1901 census James (84) and his wife Naomi (78) were living at Hundred House in the parish of Brede. Naomi Cooper died on the 10th March 1903 age 81 yrs. James Cooper died age 90 yrs. on the 31st July 1906; both were buried in St. Mary’s churchyard, Udimore. Their son James Cooper who was born in 1854 at Iden, he also worked on Court Lodge Farm and is listed in 1901 and 1911 censuses as the farm’s ‘bailiff’ living at Church Gate, Udimore. He died age 59 yrs. on the 12th November 1912 it is believed that he suffered a heat attack whilst working in the “Brede Marsh”. He is buried at St. Mary, Udimore together with his wife who died the following year on the 18th March 1913.

By 1911 Court Lodge was occupied by only two families. The families listed as living in Court Lodge Cottages probably occupying one side (eastern wing) of the courtyard and running perpendicular to the main galley that by then was used as storage for animals and crops. One of the families was that of Lovell James H Offen who was a ‘stockman’ on the farm.

Stockman Lovell Offen a resident of Court Lodge in 1911

Lovell’s was born in 1875 at and moved to Tenterden in the early 1890s. He married Kate’ Mary A K Burton at Tenterden’s Wesleyan Chapel on Boxing Day 1896. In the 1901 census Lovell was a ‘yardman’ for farmer Mr Rideley at Heronden Farm, St. Michaels, Tenterden. Between 1903 and 1907 Lovell and his family moved to Udimore to work at Court Lodge. Sadly his wife ‘Kate’ (nee Burton) died on the 19th November 1907 at the age 31 yrs. Following her death widower Lovell’s younger sister ‘Nel’ acted as ‘housekeeper’ to the family and helped bring up Lovell’s four children. Lovell Offen lived at Udimore until his death in 1954.

In 1912 the owner was willing to sell the manor house building but not the site, initially there was a proposal to dismantle Court Lodge Manor house and re-erect the building in Alexandra Park in Hastings to be used as a folk museum. However, funds could not be raised and the proposal fall through. The main galley of the building was purchase by the artist Mr. Lawson Wood and it was dismantled piece by piece and re-erected at Groombridge, Kent.

. Re-erected Court Lodge Gallery at Groombridge (ca. 1930)

Instead of paying cash for the timbers of the manor building, the buyer paid to have built two new worker cottages on the site were the western end of main galley was originally from the rubble includes that from the demolished middle wing.

The OS Maps below show the site Court Lodge before and after the dismantlement of main gallery.

The eastern wing of the building was not pulled down but ‘shuttered’ and converted into a stand-alone dwelling(s) that still stands today.
