This walk also takes in some fascinating industrial heritage including an old railway, a chalk quarry and the remains of its processing works.

1: Railway Remains You are about to walk along the old track bed of the Malton & Driffield Railway. The line opened in June 1853 and operated for just over 100 years, closing to all traffic in 1958. Further down the line, under the bridge, the track entered Burdale Tunnel, which is just over a mile long. During World War II, the line was used by trains carrying troops and munitions to nearby airfields. Soldiers were stationed at the tunnel entrances to ensure the trains had safe passage. The tunnel entrances were bricked up inW 1961, butO small gaps have allowed bats to enter and today the C tunnel is an important bat hibernationE site. L M D 2: Wharram Quarry ProcessingR Plant (Do not enter the buildings as they are extremely dangerous!) Y S The chalk excavatedI from Wharram Quarry was processed in these buildings. It was heated in brick-lined CM kilns, which you can see further along the track, and then crushed to a powder that was used to make MY concrete. The Htall silo is where the powdered chalk was stored and loaded intoW railway wagons. CY

CMY S 3: Wharram Station A K The station buildings are now private houses, but haven't altered a great deal. Look out for the brick bays where coalK to fuel the steam trains was stored. Also see if you can spot the water tower, another essential supply for the steam trains as they neared the summit of the line. Y This was one of the busiest stations along the line R with trains carrying livestock, grain, coal and chalk as well as a passenger service, known as the

'Malton Dodger'. Special holiday trains packed with O excited holiday makers also passed through on their way to Scarborough and Butlin's ure Holiday Camp at Filey. ent ! ” dv aits “A aw PACK Front view of Wharram Station taken circa 1905
