Mike Baggetta’s singular and very personal musical style blurs the lines between composition and improvisation, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. “Baggetta makes stealthy, mysterious music,” writes Ben Ratliff in The New York Times, “he's trying to do something personal with collective improvisation without ever getting in the way of beauty.” Born in western Massachusetts, Mike Baggetta recently relocated to Knoxville, Tennessee from New York City. He earned his Masters degree from Rutgers University in 2006, and currently teaches at Eastern Tennessee State University. “Baggetta is not an in-your-face player, preferring to dole out thoughtful but dynamic phrases with an emphasis on melody and texture,” writes Robert Iannapollo. “While he uses effects to enhance his sound they are never the dominant force. He frequently distorts his lines through unique phrasing and subtle bending and scraping of strings. And he always seems to be seeking new avenues to explore.” Mike Baggetta has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, The Kennedy Center, Town Hall and many other leading concert venues worldwide. He has worked with David Torn, Donny McCaslin, Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, Dominique Eade, Nels Cline, David Wax Museum, Tim Berne, Craig Taborn, Ches Smith, Tyshawn Sorey, Jon Irabagon, Gerald Cleaver, Greg Tardy, Adam Kolker, Cameron Brown, Tom Harrell, Jamie Baum, Jeff Hirshfield, Conrad Herwig, Jeremy Udden, Tony Reedus, John Lindberg, Kevin Norton, Bill McHenry, Brad Shepik, Steve Cardenas and Ruth Brown among many others. He has released four recordings of his quartet music featuring Jason Rigby, Eivind Opsvik, Cameron Brown, George Schuller and RJ Miller, in addition to four albums by his co-led duo TIN/BAG with trumpeter Kris Tiner. Baggetta’s latest disc, Spectre (Fresh Sound New Talent), featuring Jerome Harris and Billy Mintz, makes extensive use of live sampling as an integral part of the compositions. Despite the recent change in political currents and a re- examination of national identity, the bottom-line question persists, “Is anything really going to be different?” In this context creative musicians go about the business of making a life and making music. The questions to be reckoned with rise to the surface as always, initiating valiant attempts to squeeze out some creative response to the inexorable truth; answers come with great difficulty and spawn new questions. It is a cycle of thought that deposits one in a temporarily liberating space with a license to go for it . one more time. Tony Malaby has been going for it on a regular basis since relocating to the New York area in 1995. Among the many projects that he has initiated, this quartet is of particular interest. My perspective on his music is unique: I have observed Tony’s compositional development over the past decade and had the chance to produce two of his recordings, including this one. Over that period of time we have had occasional discussions of formative processes and approaches to composition and improvisation.

The All-Star Collective Trio Delivers a Decisive Answer with Their Sixth Album NEVER IS ENOUGH a Riveting Program of Originals by Tomas Fujiwara, Mary Halvorson and Michael Formanek A funny thing happened while Thumbscrew was hunkered down at City of Asylum, the Pittsburgh arts organization that has served as a creative hotbed for the collective trio via a series of residencies. Late in the summer of 2019 the immediate plan was for drummer Tomas Fujiwara, guitarist Mary Halvorson and bassist Michael Formanek to rehearse and record a disparate program of Anthony Braxton compositions they’d gleaned from his Tri-Centric Foundation archives, pieces released last year on The Anthony Braxton Project, a Cuneiform album celebrating his 75th birthday. At the same time, the triumvirate brought in a batch of original compositions that they also spent time refining and recording, resulting in Never Is Enough, a brilliant program of originals slated for release on Cuneiform. There’s a precedent for twined projects by the trio serving as fascinating foils for each other. In June 2018, Cuneiform simultaneously released an album of Thumbscrew originals, Ours, and Theirs, a disparate but cohesive session exploring music by the likes of Brazilian choro master Jacob do Bandolim, pianist Herbie Nichols, and Argentine tango master Julio de Caro. Those albums were also honed and recorded during a City of Asylum residency. While not intended as the same kind of dialogue, The Anthony Braxton Project and Never Is Enough do seem to speak eloquently (if cryptically) to each other.

A recently formed collective of improvisational masters, the trio features guitarist Mary Halvorson and drummer Tomas Fujiwara, who can often be found working together in an array of arresting settings, and bassist Michael Formanek, a creative catalyst on jazz’s adventurous frontiers for more than three decades. Slated for release by Cuneiform on January 21, 2014, Thumbscrew’s eponymous debut album documents the group’s commitment to new music created specifically for the ensemble. Formanek, Halvorson and Fujiwara are all known for their prodigious capabilities in free improv settings, but Thumbscrew is more of a composer’s vehicle. While many cooperative bands draw on material recycled from other projects, “one of the things we said at the beginning is let’s just write music for Thumbscrew and it will only be Thumbscrew music,” says Formanek. “It really is a three- composer trio, and all of our tunes have our basic aesthetics attached. It conjures up images of dimly-lit clubs and some bassist slumped over their instrument, eyes closed, coordinating the maelstrom around them. But for their almost supreme importance, people still talk during the bass solo and think it odd when a bassist New York@Night leads a group. We hope our special Bass Issue will change that. 4 While we’ve had previous issues devoted to a single instrument, not once have we gone this overboard. On The Cover we have the seminal Buster Williams, Interview: John Patitucci whose resumé reads like jazz history and brings a quartet to Iridium. Interview 6 by Terrell Holmes John Patitucci, besides his work as a leader, has been an integral part of many important groups, perhaps none more so than the quartet of Wayne Shorter, with Artist Feature: Michael Formanek whom Patitucci appears at Town Hall this month. Michael Formanek (Artist 7 by Kurt Gottschalk Feature) is known more for being an in-demand sideman since the early ‘80s but has had his forays into leadership, including last year’s acclaimed The Rub and On The Cover: Buster Williams Spare Change (ECM), the group from which will appear at Connection Works’ 9 by Ken Dryden monthly showcase at Littlefield.
