Track & Field 4 Home of the Racers

Marshall Gage Track Without questi on, Murray State’s track faciliti es are some of the fi nest in the nati on, and the most outstanding in the region. The centerpiece of the track and fi eld faciliti es is the nine-lane-state-of-the-art running surface. Originally built in 1973 as part of the Roy Stewart Stadium constructi on project, the track was initi ally surfaced with a Rekortan running surface used in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Recently the surface was replaced again giving the Racers a brand new track to practi ce and compete on.

MSU alum Marshall Gage was the primary donor and fundraiser for the fi rst resurfacing project and conti nues to be a great supporter of the program. So much in fact, the track was named in his honor in 1996.

Gage ran for the Racers from 1957-61 as a sprinter and hurdler. Gage was the only runner in the 1959 Ohio Valley Conference championships to win three events, placing fi rst in the 100-yard dash, 120-yard high hurdles and 220-yard low hurdles. He was inducted to the MSU Hall of Fame in 1965 and was also a 1995 Golden Horseshoe Award recipient.

In additi on to the nine-lane track, the MSU track and fi eld faciliti es include spacious, modern locker rooms for men and women, and a well- equipped weight room and training room.

Located inside the stadium are: two long jump pits, a high jump area, a pole vault pit and a shot put area. Discus, javelin and hammer throw faciliti es are situated just outside the stadium. Roy Stewart Stadium

Considered to be one of the fi nest faciliti es in the nati on, picturesque Roy Stewart Stadium has provided MSU with a spacious, well- tended and modern facility since it opened in 1973. The seven-fl oor structure provides opti mum seati ng for 16,800 fans. It serves as the centerpiece to Murray State’s centralized athleti c facility along with the Regional Special Events Center for MSU basketball and the baseball team’s . The stadium, not only has a new track, but also in the summer of 2007 a new fi eld turf surface was installed.

The fi rst level of the stadium houses spacious offi ces and meeti ng rooms for football and track and fi eld. It also includes the Tom “Doc” Simmons Training Room and one of the fi nest weight rooms in America, along with expansive dressing rooms for football, track, and baseball.

The Stadium, which is named for one of MSU’s greatest coaches and administrators, is sti ll one of the fi nest athleti cs facilti ti es in the region and a conti nued testament to the MSU spirit of those who had the vision to build it. Murray State University Coaching Staff 5

Head Coach Dereck Chavis Murray State University Head Track and Field Coach Dereck Chavis is in his 14th overall season of coaching track and fi eld. Chavis joined the MSU athleti cs department on Jan. 12, 2005.

His coaching duti es encompass the sprints, hurdles, horizontal and verti cal jumps. Chavis is a United States Track and Field Level I Lead Instructor and is a USATF Level II coach in the sprints, hurdles and endurance events. In additi on to being a USATF meet offi cial, Coach Chavis is also a Certi fi ed Strength and Conditi oning Specialist, certi fi ed by the Nati onal Strength and Conditi oning Associati on.

Since his arrival in 2005, the impact he has made on the women’s team has been signifi cant and unparalleled. It is evident that Chavis has restored and propelled Murray State’s track & fi eld program into a perennial contender within the OVC in only four seasons. During the past four seasons the track program has seen 14 OVC individual conference champions, 38 all-conference athletes, and 28 broken school records. Chavis has helped to coach athletes to all- conference and record setti ng performances.

A year aft er one of the most successful track and fi eld seasons in 2007-08, Coach Chavis conti nued to produce champions and record breakers. During the 2008-09 season, Chavis coached three OVC Athletes of the Year, six conference champions, two Athletes of the Championship and 16 all-conference athletes. Chavis witnessed 11 school records being broke throughout the season as well.

Chavis began his coaching career at Indiana State, his alma mater, where he was a two-ti me team captain and All-Missouri Valley Conference sprinter. During his two-year sti nt as an assistant at Indiana State, he was instrumental in helping the women’s program gain two Missouri Valley track and fi eld ti tles. He coached a runner- up in the 60-meter high hurdles and a 4th-place fi nisher in the long jump at the men’s NCAA Division I nati onal meet while at Indiana State. Additi onally, Chavis coached Sariyu Shitt u who ranked 3rd and 4th on the women’s list in the 200 and 400; and Craig Brown, who ranked 4th in the 60 and indoor 200-meter dashes.

Chavis also spent fi ve seasons at Division III Hope College where he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Coach Dereck Chavis the men’s and women’s head track and fi eld coach. During his ti me at Hope he elevated the men’s and women’s programs by developing them into conference championship contenders and garnering the most nati onal recogniti on ever att ained in the program’s history. Under Chavis’ tutelage the programs boasted seven All-Americans, 23 nati onal qualifi ers, 21 conference champions, 31 all-conference athletes, two conference MVP’s and 32 school records. Some notable athletes include three-ti me nati onal qualifi er Eduardo Perez in the 400-meter hurdles, All-American Christi ana Watkin in the long jump and nati onal qualifi er Erica Torgerson in the heptathlon.

Coach Chavis’ knowledge of speed and power development are key in his ability to improve his athletes and elevate the overall competi ti veness of the cross country and track/fi eld athletes. His fi rm belief of pati ently teaching the skills and technique involved in an event, in additi on to bringing the athlete to a high level of power and fi tness, have been the catalysts for the high level of success that has followed him.

Chavis is married to Llena Chavis and has a daughter, Danielle, and two sons, Ian and Xavier.

Track & Field 28 Weaver Center

Backing up its commitment to ensure that Racer student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the athleti c fi elds, Murray State athleti cs established a state-of-the-art academic center.

Named in honor of longti me supporters Jan and Dick Weaver, who provided funding for the building of the center, the Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at Roy Stewart Stadium June 30, 1997, and immediately began to pay dividends in the MSU athleti cs program.

Today, the Weaver Center is a spacious facility equipped with individual and group study areas, but the centerpiece of the Weaver Center is its computer lab.

In the past two years the lab has been outf itt ed with all new desktop computers. Student-athletes can use the computers to access the internet for research and to complete class projects and papers.

MSU student-athletes also use the Weaver Center for study hall, which meets throughout the day. During study hall, student-athletes have access to tutors, study groups and computers.

The center conti nues to play a key role in the academic success of MSU student-athletes. For the 2008-09 academic year 152 student- athletes had a 3.5 or higher grade point average and 37 had perfect 4.0 GPA’s.

The center is open 12 hours a day, six days a week during the school year, with an abbreviated schedule during the summer and holidays.

Track & Field 36 2009 Cross Country in Review

The 2009 Women’s Cross Country team made big strides during the seven-meet season and with only three seniors in the mix, the Racers gained valuable experience that will play a major role in the squad’s success in 2010. MSU was led by senior Taylor Crawford, who recorded MSU’s top fi nish in four of the races this season. Joining the speedy senior was Katelyn Jones who was the top Racers fi nisher in the other three meets. Strong performances were oft en given by junior Asenath Na’Aman and sophmores Kayla Crusham and Karissa Magnuson throughout the year. MSU opened the season at the Belmont Opener where they fi nished seventh in the nine team meet. Jones was the top MSU fi nisher that morning as she turned in a 15th place fi nish on the 4k course. Just behind Jones was Crawford who fi nished 30th with a ti me of 15:26. Na’Aman fi nished third for the Racers and 36th overall. Magnuson and Kristen Reff ett crossed the fi nish line 47th and 54th, respecti vely. Despite a disappointi ng fi nish at the Belmont Opener, MSU now had something to grow on. The Racers followed up their disappointi ng seventh place fi nish at the Belmont Opener by fi nishing third out of 18 schools competi ng at the Commodore Classic, hosted by Vander- bilt University. Crawford crossed the line in 18:46 to fi nish fi ft h overall, while Jones fi nished 11th with a ti me of 19:13. Na’Aman and Magnuson fi nished just behind Jones in 19th and 23rd place, respecti vley. Crusham rounded out the scoring for the Racers as she fi nished 48th. In the Racers next meet, the squad tallied their second consecuti ve third place fi nish with this one coming at the Saluki Invitati onal. Jones and Crawford turned in top-10 fi nishes as they fi nished fi ft h and 10th, respecti vely. The Racers squad conti nued to improve as they fi nished 2nd at the Tennessee Tech Invite in the seven team meet. Craw- ford, Jones and Na’Aman each fi nished in the top-fi ve to help lead MSU to their best fi nish of the season so far. MSU clinched their fi rst team ti tle of the season at the Evansville Invitati onal in their fi nal meet before the OVC Champi- onships. Once again, Crawford, Jones and Na’Aman led the way as they turned in top-10 fi nishes. The Racers had one date marked on their calanders this year, that date was Oct. 31 for the OVC Championships. MSU ran on a wet and muddy course and fell just short of the team ti tle as they fi nished second. Crawford was the top Racers preformer as she fi nished second and earned All-OVC First Team honors. Jones fi nished fi ft h and earned All-OVC First Team honors as well. Crusham fi nished 14th in the 5k race and was named to the All- OVC Second Team. MSU closed out their season at the NCAA Southeast Re- gional meet in Louisville, Ky. Crawford was once again the top Racer fi nisher, followed by Na’Aman and Jones. The MSU distance runners will conti nue to improve upon their strong cross country campaign during the 2009-10 Track and Field seasons.
