BINGLEY BelongGrowSucceed Newsletter July 2019 A Word from the Headteacher

There have been so many events, trips and memorable moments in the last few weeks and months, including our Celebration Evening which was held on Tuesday. It was an honour to welcome Jean and Arek Hersh as our special guests – they have given so many of our students an amazing piece of living history along with a message of kindness and tolerance of other’s beliefs. Our school is richer for knowing them and we thank them for their time and generosity. We also welcomed Dr Frazer from the BRI to present him with a cheque for the money raised from the Yr 7 Sponsored walk – we were as amazed as he was to be handing over £8937.44 for the children’s Rays a Smile appeal, incredible work from Year 7. We have enjoyed Sports Day, Proms, trips, shows and Awards assemblies together and these shared experiences make our community stronger. I would like to thank all our staff, students and parent/carers for working together to be the best that we can be and striving to Belong Grow and Succeed. I hope you all have an enjoyable and restful summer and I look forward to welcoming everyone back in September.

Mr Luke Weston Headteacher Yr 11 Prom On Thursday 4th July, our Year 11 students gathered at the Mercure Bankfield Hotel to celebrate their time at Grammar School. The year group as a whole have worked incredibly hard over the last 5 years and the students were looking forward to one last celebration before they continue on their journey.

The evening started with students making memorable entrances in front of their peers, staff and parents. Some highlights included a Fire engine, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar XK120, Audi RS6 (with coloured smoke coming from the back) and Harry B in his mini Landrover that he drove himself down the hotel drive! Following this, the achievements of some selected students were recognised in our Prom awards ceremony. Categories included such titles as “Most likely to become Prime Minister” won by Peggy S, “Most likely to be a millionaire” won by Akhbar A and “Pro selfie taker” won by Hana A.

Our photographer for the evening, Julie from Imajination Photogoraphy also complimented our students by saying the students were delightful throughout the night and she has taken some amazing photos that our students can purchase if they didn’t on the evening.

We are looking forward to seeing all the students during Results Day on the Thursday 22th August and wish all our Leavers of 2019 all the best for the future. UKMT Maths Certificates 2019 has been an exciting year for our Junior Mathematicians. There have been many achievements and this week Mrs Mdlongwa presented students with their certificates. Junior Team Challenge Held at Grammar School, on the 18th of March, our team of four Year 7s battled against thirty-one other year 8 / 9 teams from other schools and came twelfth. They surprised even the Bradford Grammar Coordinator who had visibly looked surprised by our daring young team, at the start of the event. Well done to the team: Zak B, Alex V-S, Oscar G and Ben W!

Individual Junior Maths Challenge On the 30th of April, 117 year 7s and eights participated in the Individual Juniour Challenge. 720 000 pupils participated throughoput the country, 40% of which attained at medal level. Out of our 117 who took part, 50 achieved medals, placing us 3% above the national level. Well done to all our mathematicians!! Miss Shah’s Tea Party On Wednesday 10th July, the students from the Youth Parliament as well as stu- dents from various year groups organised a tea party for residents of Thompson Court Care Home. Miss Shah has been running a tea party for the elderly in our community for a few years now and each year our students enjoy a really positive experience chatting with the residents and sharing stories whilst serving others. Our guests were served afternoon tea and drinks by our students and entertained with a game of bingo. In the build up to the event a number of extra students asked Miss Shah if they could take part in the tea party, as they wanted to do something for the local community, so there were plenty of helpers on the day to serve the drinks and chat with our guests. Miss Shah said, “This year I was so impressed with the students who helped with the tea party. I was proud of the effort they made to welcome such valued members of our local community. They really enjoyed listening to the residents stories as well as sharing their own. And the Bingo callers were fantastic again! The students were a credit to Bingley Grammar.” The event was a great success and enjoyed by both students and guests. Miss Shah would like to thank all of the students and staff who helped to organise the event and we look forward to inviting members of our local community back to visit next year. Year 10 Mock Interviews On Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th July our Year 10 students each had their own mock job interviews with real employers from NYBEP. These interviews introduced our students to the process of applying for a job and preparing for an interview. Students were asked to prepare a CV and think about what they would speak about in their interviews prior to the day. On the day the students underwent a 15-20 minute interview with an external employer/business volunteer from a range of industries including College, RAF, Bingley Town Council, Water RRG, Lloyds Bank, IV, Melrose interior, Stocksfield Construction, Army Careers, Watson Buckle, STEM Ambassador, Pennington, Wilmot Dixon, Theia Drone, Diamond Microwave, SNG Logistics, Cardinal, Ramboll and Aston University. During the interview students were asked questions such as ‘where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?’, ‘what are your strengths?’, ‘what are your interests?’ and ‘what do you consider your weaker points?’. Each student will receive individual feedback following the interview. Our students were brilliant and we got fantastic feedback about them from the employers. After they had their interview, students were asked to complete an evaluation about the interview and here is a summary of the results: - 100% felt that their confidence and self belief had improved - 97% would recommend the activity to a friend or peer - 94% felt they better understood the importance of working hard at school - 96% felt they better understood that a positive attitude is needed to succeed - 93% felt their communication skills had improved - And 90% of students felt they were more prepared for the world of work

We are delighted that our students improved their confidence and that they felt the interviews were worthwhile. Year 8 Malham Trip On Monday 8th and Tuesday 9th July, 220 Year 8 students visited the Yorkshire Dales National Park for a walk around Malham. Students took in spectacular sights including Malham Cove, the limestone pavement, Gordale Scar, and Janet’s Foss waterfall. The 4.5 mile walk, including the 412 steps up to the top of Malham Cove made this a true challenge for some but a really positive experience none the less. Despite some tired legs and hard work, everyone was rewarded with impressive and spectacular views across the Yorkshire Dales. As ever, the students were an absolute credit to . Thank you to our Geography department who organised the trip and to the staff who accompanied the groups and took part in the walk Yr 7 & Yr 8 French Trip 2019 At the beginning of July, Mrs Greening, Mr Ward and Mr Barker took 27 Year 7 and 8 students to Normandy to practice their French, learn about the culture, and sample the cuisine. Mrs Greening reports, We spend a fabulous few days “en France” with our great Yr 7 and Yr 8 French linguists. Despite a long coach journey it was well worth the effort and we had such a busy programme of events. It’s not often you get to say you have stayed in a castle with its own outdoor heated pool which served German officers in World War 2! Our students took part in a tasting session trying frogs legs and snails which was followed up by delicious crépes as a reward for their bravery! The students were tasked with buying produce in the local market (all French speaking, of course!) before preparing a gourmet lunch, judged by the chateau chef. For the historians, we visited the 70m Bayeux Tapestry, paid respects in the American Cemetery at Omaha, watched footage of the D Day landings in a 360* cinema and took a tour of a D-Day landing beach in Arromanches. Whilst on the beach, one of the group told Mrs Greening that his Grandad was actually part of the D-Day landings and he loved being able to retrace his steps. For the sporty, the pool sessions and the other facilities ensured that there was plenty of outdoor fun - volleyball, table football, rounders and football.

It was a pleasure to take the “French Crew” from Yr 7 and 8 and as ever they were a credit to the school.

Yr 7 Aminah Wins British Heroes Competition On Friday 5th July, Shipley MP Philip Davies visited our school to award all our students who entered his British Heroes competition.

After the success of the British Heroes competition last year, MP Philip Davies asked students in the Shipley Constituency to enter a piece of work celebrating their own British Heroes. Miss Shah’s RE classes decided to take part and created their entries as optional homework. There was a wide range of heroes celebrated in the entries including the Arek Hersh, Tim Peake, JK Rowling and Tom Daley as well as student’s family members - their personal heroes. The judges of the competition were Olympic Triathletes Alistair and , Noreen Khan the Director of NEESIE, Chief Executive of Bradford Council Kersten England and Editor of the Telegraph & Argus Nigel Burton. Mr Davies told the group that the judges were hugely impressed by the standard of the entries and the reasons behind the varied choice of heroes. The MP for Shipley talked about how we should be proud of our multicultural society and beliefs and he wanted us all to focus on being proud of being British. Mr Davies awarded each student with a certificate for their efforts thanking them for taking part. At the end of the session Mr Davies announced the overall winner of the Year 7 category as Aminah, describing her entry about Mathematician Alan Turing (the new face of the £50 note!) as an amazing piece of work which had impressed all the judges. Aminah has won a family pass and travel voucher to Bletchley Park, the home of the WW2 codebreakers! Well done to everyone who took part in the competition and thank you to Mr Davies for taking the time to visit and congratulate our students. 100 % School Attendance We know students sometimes have to take time off school for many reasons which can’t be avoided but we also think it’s amazing that these students manage 100% attendance through a year or two or three or even four! Yr 7 Summer Fair On Monday 8th July our Year 7s enjoyed a Summer Fair organised and run by our Yr 7 Student Council. The Yr 7 Councillors have been planning and arranging the event for some time and it was great to see all their hard work come together. The form groups were invited to visit the Fair during their extended BGS form time to enjoy the games and treats whilst raising money for a worthy cause. The stalls at the fair were: - A Chocolate Tombola - ‘Guess the Teacher’ baby photos - Play Your Cards Right game - Guess the number of sweets in the jar - Football shoot out against Mr McGregor - Basketball hoops - Craft Stalls - and the much anticipated and enjoyed ‘Sponge-a-teacher’! All our Year 7 students enjoyed the afternoon and special thanks go to Mr Weston, Mrs Dean, Mr Foster, Miss Wright and Mr Crawford for getting soaked in the Sponge-a-Teacher event! The student council raised a brilliant £244.64 at the fair which will be added to the money raised by the Yr 7 sponsored walk and donated to the BRI’s ‘Rays A Smile’ fund.
