Warrandyte's Eucalypts
Gum-barked Eucalypts Stringybarks Warrandyte eucalypts have cream or white flowers. Flowering time is variable throughout the year depending on the species. Close examination of the buds and fruits (gumnuts) makes identification easier. Their position in the landscape can also give a clue to which species is which. Use this list as a rough guide and remember there will be exceptions. Messm ate Eucalyptus obliqua Gum-barked Eucalypts
Sw am p G u m Eucalyptus ovata Small to medium tree to 20m. March-June Broad, dark, glossy leaves, wavy margins. Juvenile leaves elliptical to ovate. Rough dark brown bark on lower trunk, otherwise smooth and white.
Candlebark Eucalyptus rubida Medium to tall tree to 30m. Nov-Feb Leaves long and narrow. Juvenile leaves round, opposite, stalkless. Smooth white bark with reddish patches, shed in strips.
M an na G u m Eucalyptus viminalis Tall tree to 50m.Jan-May Leaves long and narrow. Juvenile leaves sword shaped, opposite, stalkless. Bark rough at base, Candlebark Eucalyptus rubida otherwise white, smooth, shed in strips. Red Stringybark Eucalyptus macrorhyncha Peppermints Stringybarks
Red Stringybark Eucalyptus macrorhyncha Medium tree to 20m. Jan-April Long, broad leaves, juvenile leaves ovate with short stalks. Fissured, long-fibred bark, reddish underneath.
M essm ate Eucalyptus obliqua Medium to tall tree to 30m. Dec-March Leaves dark, broadly lanceolate, with asymmetrical bases. Juvenile leaves ovate, opposite. Pale greyish-brown, long-fibred bark.
Peppermints
Narrow-leaf Peppermint Eucalyptus radiata Small to medium tree to 20m. Oct-Jan Small, thin, narrow, bright green leaves, strongly aromatic, juvenile leaves opposite, narrow, Manna Gum Eucalyptus viminalis stalkless on rough stems. Very fine scaly bark. Bundy or Long-leaf Box Yellow Box Eucalyptus melliodora Red Box Eucalyptus polyanthemos Eucalyptus goniocalyx Medium to tall tree to 35m. Sept-March Small to medium tree to 25m. Sept-Jan Small to medium tree to 15m. March-Aug Leaves small, narrow, greyish green. Blue-green rounded leaves. Juvenile leaves Long, tapering, dark green leaves. Juvenile Juvenile leaves oval. Scaly bark on trunk round with notched tips. Fine scaly bark. leaves round, opposite, stalkless. Thick and lower limbs, yellowish near base. rough scaly bark. Smooth pale upper limbs.
