Hansang Lee 2009 6 Abstract Stephen Charnock (1628-1680) is arguably remembered for his importance, at the zenith of Puritan or English Reformed scholastic divinity, in terms of the doctrine of God’s existence and attributes. He also contributed to Reformed orthodox or Puritan theology through his writings on the knowledge of God, the doctrine of regeneration, Christology, and the atonement. He wrote all these work in the midst of the theological turbulence of the later seventeenth century, with the underlying purpose of defending the inseparability of theological system and piety. His work, with its eclectic acceptance of medieval scholastic intellectual tradition as a tool, plays a significant role in the development of an historical phase of trinitarian and federal theology. However, The Existence and Attributes of God as Charnock’s magnum opus has been unexplored in terms of its view of the full doctrine of God in its trinitarian and covenantal dimensions. This is despite the fact that the Puritan concept of the divine attributes is the very doctrinal area in which the theological loci are concentrated into “a system” associated with the pursuit of piety in the period of high orthodoxy. This lack of a comprehensive overview concerning the Reformed orthodox system has brought about a misunderstanding of his theology. Charnock’s work has been regarded, even in recent scholarship, as the product of a mere scholastic rationalism. William Perkins (1558-1602) is undoubtedly the “father” of the doctrine of God in the early Puritan or Reformed orthodox period. Although misunderstandings concerning his scholastic Puritan theology and its trinitarian system and piety have been successfully rectified by other previous researchers, a confirmation of it through an investigation of his idea of God’s attributes is necessary in our study. This is in order to prove the identity of Charnock’s doctrine of God with the Puritan Reformed orthodox theological system allowing, of course, for the development of the historical and theological context between these two periods. In particular, Charnock’s understanding of the theological prolegomena, Scriptural foundations, and God’s existence and attributes is dealt with in this current study in comparison with Perkins’ work. Charnock’s work has been viewed in terms of a continuity between the early and high orthodox doctrine of God within the flow of English Puritan

More specifically, it fo- cuses on the central problem at the Synod, viz. the relationship between God and human beings, as expressed in the ideas contained in the Canon regarding divine election and repro- bation. As illustration the positions of two leading figures in the clash between the Calvinists and the Remonstrants, namely that of Gomarus (1563-1641) and Arminius (1560-1609), are philosophically analysed. In spite of the fact that neither view- point was eventually accepted by the Synod, their theologies clearly reflect the dominant scholastic philosophy of the time. This analysis is carried out in the context of the problem- historical method of historiography developed by D.H. Th. In his introduction to those published papers on the Westminster Confession of Faith, Professor Heron said this: Some feel that continued adherence to the Confession is a vital bulwark of the Church’s faith, and indeed of its identity. Others are convinced that the qualifications with which the Confession is hedged about make the adherence required of ministers and elders a mere formality, largely meaningless and in practice ineffectual, and the Church must express its doctrinal basis with greater definiteness than the Confession can enable.     "NOT A SPARROW FALLS": ON PROVIDENCE AND RESPONSIBILITY IN HISTORY To ask about the meaning of providence and historical responsibility in Chris- tian understanding today is to enter a domain of mystery. On the one side, the ex- perience of evil in the twentieth century is so profound that the simple saying of Jesus about God's intimate care for humans, "not a sparrow falls," seems almost naive. On the other side, the dominance of science and technology suggests a hu- man community and a world quite on its own without need or opening for the care of God who, the saying implies, is involved in the world's smallest happening as in history's ultimate direction and goal. There is a paradox in this sense of evil and of autonomy that is our burden today in questions of God's providence and our responsibility. For never have we been more conscious of the immense capacity that is ours. We have astonishing scientific and technological ability, to travel in space, to heal illness and prolong life, to feed the world, to create social, political and religious institutions, to reor- der society according to inclusive and humane patterns. But we have also the abil- ity to destroy, in our consuming greed, human lives and the human environment, to end the whole historical project. Hence our feeling of powerlessness, of en- trapment in what we have made, the feeling that our agency is beyond our control, a new kind of fate. How might the mystery of providence be understood today? Would something be missing in Christian experience without this symbol of God's hidden guidance, God's secret design for us and our world that constitutes a claim on our practice and on all we create?1 A liberation theologian reports that providence is an abused concept in which God's will has been invoked to "justify colonial conquest, racism, the gross ex- ploitation of the poor by the rich, and shameless abuses of political and even ec- clesiastical power.

A Biblical Theology of Providence Compared with ‘Chance’ and ‘Good Luck’ in Greco-Roman and African Traditions Matthew Michael1 ABSTRACT The paper presents a biblical theology of providence by exploring the theological tensions between divine determinism and the beliefs in ‘chance’ and ‘good luck’ in Greco-Roman and traditional African worldviews.2 It also situates the discourse in the template of biblical theology and other defining theological works. Finally, the paper explores the distinctive character of providence in biblical thought and its possible use to affirm the sovereignty, care and love of God in the face of despair, misery and lostness that have characterized modern African societies. 1. Introduction Every human society has assumptions concerning the powers at work in existence that are presumed to determine and ultimately shape everything to some desired ends. The popular Greek belief was that fate is such a power at work in the world. Fate determines the course of history and of human conduct.3 For the ancient Greeks, fate was the inescapable companion of every person with the power to control everyone.
