16 CONFERENCE Alcorn Notes Continued... - In the season-opener, senior Corey McCullough became the school’s all-time leader in most field goals CHAMPIONSHIPS made with 35. Last season, Johnson ranked third in the nation in rushing yards per carry (7.5) and 16th in completion percentage (.621). 1970 - SWAC 1974 - SWAC - The Braves are ranked No. 3 in the national HBCU Poll. They are also receiving 48 votes in the FCS Top-25. 1976 - SWAC 1979 - SWAC - Alcorn was picked to win the SWAC East Division in the 2019 Preseason Poll. The Braves are the five- time defending SWAC East Division champions and the reigning SWAC Champions. Alcorn returns eight 1984 - SWAC starters on offense and seven on defense. 1992 - SWAC 1994 - SWAC - The Braves landed 14 student-athletes on the SWAC Preseason All-Conference Teams. The list included Johnson who was named the SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, and senior linebacker 2014 - SWAC Solomon Muhammad who was tabbed the SWAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. 2015 - SWAC 2018 - SWAC - Both Johnson and Waller were inked to the Watch List, which goes to the best offensive player in FCS. Johnson was the 2018 SWAC Offensive Player of the Year and SWAC Championship Offensive MVP, while Waller was the 2018 SWAC Newcomer of the Year. Johnson and FIVE DIVISION Waller were the only student-athletes from the SWAC on the list. CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 - SWAC East Division - Additionally, Waller and Johnson were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in the Top-5 Players to Watch in HBCU by BOXTOROW 2015 - SWAC East Division 2016 - SWAC East Division - Muhammad grabbed a spot on the Award Watch List, which goes to the best defensive 2017 - SWAC East Division player in FCS. COLLEGE NATIONAL - Alcorn landed six student-athletes on the HBCU Preseason All-America Team. The list included CHAMPIONSHIPS Johnson, Waller, Hall, Muhammad, senior offensive lineman Mustaffa Ibrahim and junior defensive back 1968 Qwynnterrio Cole. 1969 - Fred McNair, the reigning SWAC Coach of the Year winner, is in his fourth season as head coach. The 1974 Braves have won the SWAC East Division and played in the SWAC Championship all three years under 1984 McNair. He carries a 16-7 SWAC record. 2014 - Waller was named the Top Running Back in the SWAC by HBCU Gameday preseason. He began 2018 as the No. 3 running back on the depth chart and worked his way into the starting roll. Waller rushed for THREE FCS PLAYOFFS & at least 100 yards in seven of the last eight games including the SWAC Championship where he tallied a THREE BOWL GAMES game-high 177 yards and three touchdowns. He broke loose for an 83-yard touchdown run which was 1968 - Orange Blossom Bowl the second-longest in the history of the SWAC Championship game. Waller followed it up by running for a game-high 167 yards in the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl. He ended with 1,215 rushing yards and (Win, 36-9 over Florida A&M) 12 touchdowns. John Robert “Jack” Spinks (Aug. 15 1930 - Sept. 29, 1994) played five seasons in the NFL. He was the first Brave to play in the NFL and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1952.

Marino Casem was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. He coached Alcorn to four Black College National Championships and seven SWAC titles. Casem also served as the athletic director at Alcorn from 1966-1986. After that, he served for many years on the NCAA’s Football Rules Committee and Executive Com- mittee. Casem has also been inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame, Alcorn Hall of Honor and Noah Johnson Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. He’s received SWAC Offensive Player of the Year the National Football Foundation’s Outstanding SWAC Championship Offensive MVP Contribution to Amateur Football award and the SWAC All-Conference First-Team Football Writers Association Citation of Honor.
