First Division

After only five games of the season no team boasted an unbeaten record with last year’s champions Merlins Bridge losing 4-0 at home to last year’s joint runners up Johnston 4-0, with Charlie Edwards scoring two of the goals for the visitors. Johnston themselves had lost their first game of the season, a midweek fixture away to newly promoted St Clears 2-0, whilst Goodwick United, who had also finished as runners up last year, lost the last unbeaten record when they lost 1-0 to a Paul Webb goal at Narberth on 20/9/80. On the same day Johnston won 3-2 at New Hedges/Saundersfoot, with Gary McNeilly and Neil Webb scoring for the homesters with two Chris Walters goals and one from Mike Griffiths giving the visitors an important win, and putting them top of the table.

A week later the top two met at Johnston and goals from Pat Pearce, Phillip Pearce and Stewart Wilson saw Goodwick go back top, with Charlie Edwards netting the lone home goal.

Carew were up with the leading pack at this stage but back to back defeats against Johnston at home 2-4 (Nigel Scarfe, Graham Jones/Colin Thorpe(2), John Codd, Chris Walters) and Goodwick United away, 1-3(Dai Sefton/Mike Robb, John Leahy, Stewart Wilson) saw them drop off the pace.

On the 8/11/80, goals from Martin Davies and Chris Walters saw third placed Johnston beat second placed Narberth 2-0 at the Glebelands. Meanwhile defending champions Merlins Bridge were held to a 1-1 draw by New Hedges/Saundersfoot where Joe Lydon had given the visitors the lead only for Mario Rabaiotti to equalise for the Bridge. A fortnight later the seasiders once again took points off a top team with a 3-3 draw away to the league leaders Goodwick, and if it hadn’t been for a last minute goal from Keith Swales they would have returned home with all the points. John Stenson, Gary McNeilly and Joe Lydon had scored for the visitors with two Pat Pearce goals, one a penalty, replying for the league leaders before Swales’s last minute goal.

This was to be the start of a difficult spell for the league leaders and despite beating Kilgetty 2-0 on 6/12 (Mike Robb and Mike Delaney), they then suffered surprising back to back defeats. On 20/12 they lost at home to eleventh placed Solva 1-2, where despite taking the lead courtesy of Mike Robb, a John Luke free kick and a scorching drive from Andrew Nesbitt gave the visitors a surprise win. On the same day Johnston moved back top of the table when they won 2-1 at Fishguard Sports thanks to two Mike Griffiths goals; Eddie Merry replied for the Sports.

Then on Boxing day Goodwick suffered another home defeat, this time 2-0 to arch rival Fishguard Sports who at this point were sitting second from bottom of the table. Goals from Lyn Lewis and Gethin Griffiths gave the Sports a crucial win in their fight against relegation. The following day Johnston entertained Merlins Bridge who went 1-0 up thanks to a Macky Bowen goal. However goals from Colin Thorpe and Martin Davies saw the homesters take the lead only for 15 year old Alan Pughsley to equalise and earn the Bridge a point.

As a result the table at the end of the year looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Johnston 14 10 2 2 41 21 20 22 2 Goodwick United 15 8 4 3 30 15 15 20 3 Monkton Swifts 14 6 5 3 25 14 11 17 4 Merlins Bridge 14 6 5 3 34 24 10 17 5 New Hedges/Saundersfoot 14 5 4 5 31 22 9 14 6 Narberth 12 6 2 4 15 14 1 14 7 St Clears 12 6 2 4 25 25 0 14 8 Hakin United 14 4 5 5 29 29 0 13 9 Solva 15 4 4 7 24 32 -8 12 10 Kilgetty 13 5 2 6 16 28 -12 12 11 Carew 12 5 1 6 23 29 -6 11 12 Milford United 12 1 7 4 15 24 -9 9 13 Fishguard Sports 13 3 1 9 22 38 -16 7 14 Newcastle Emlyn 12 1 2 9 12 27 -15 4

In the new year Goodwick’s form continued to falter and a critical 3-2 defeat away to the Bridge on 10/1 saw them slip further behind. Anthony Leahy and Stewart Wilson had scored for the visitors but two Mario Rabaiotti goals and one from Robbie Reynolds saw the Bridge take the points.

A week later Johnston dropped a point following a 2-2 home draw with Carew (Richard James and Peter Griffiths/Jonathan Griffiths and Graham Jones), and then on 31/1 they lost at home to the Swifts 1-0 thanks to a Kenny Lawrence goal. However, Goodwick failed to take advantage of this slip and on the same day they lost 3-1 away to Kilgetty with Ronnie Hurst (two) and Paul Hancock scoring for the homesters with Stewart Wilson scoring for Goodwick. Thus at the end of January the top of the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Johnston 17 11 3 3 47 24 23 25 2 Merlins Bridge 17 9 5 3 41 26 15 23 3 Goodwick United 18 9 4 5 34 21 13 22 4 Monkton Swifts 16 8 5 3 29 16 13 21 5 Narberth 16 9 3 4 24 19 5 21

On the 14/2 Johnston dropped another home point with a 0-0 draw with St Clears, but with Monkton losing 2-0 at Carew (Jonathan Griffiths and Dai Arthur), and Narberth losing 3-1 at the Bridge (Tim Green, Mario Rabaiotti, Robbie Reynolds/Paul Webb), it was only the Bridge who benefitted from Johnston’s dropped point.

A week later the Bridge lost 2-1 at New Hedges/Saundersfoot (Gary McNeilly, John Stenson/Donald Forrest), and the seasiders had the opportunity a week later to damage Johnston’s title hopes when they travelled north to face the league leaders. However the home team turned in a fine team performance in recording a 3-0 win thanks to two Charlie Edwards goals and one from Mike Griffiths.

Johnston then went on to win their next six games whilst all their challengers continued to drop points. They avenged their defeat to Monkton Swifts by beating them 1-0 in a midweek fixture and they eventually clinched the title with a 4-0 victory away to Narberth on the Friday night (10/4) before the Senior Cup final.

They ended the season with a 5-0 defeat at Goodwick United but still won the league by four points with Merlins Bridge eventually finishing runners-up thanks to a crucial 1-0 win away to Monkton Swifts on 14/4. New Hedges/Saundersfoot finished fourth having won nine of their last ten games, whilst third placed Goodwick United could look back to their wobble in December/January when they lost four out of five games.

At the bottom of the table the position at 7/3 looked as follows, with Newcastle Emlyn looking doomed but the other relegation place looking very close.

9 Solva 24 5 8 11 35 49 -14 18 10 Kilgetty 19 6 4 9 24 44 -20 16 11 Milford United 19 3 9 7 26 36 -10 15 12 Hakin United 22 5 5 12 40 54 -14 15 13 Fishguard Sports 22 6 3 13 37 53 -16 15 14 Newcastle Emlyn 21 2 4 15 24 52 -28 8

On 28/3 Milford United and Kilgetty drew 2-2 at Marble Hall with Bernie Armstrong and Mark Davies scoring for the Robins with two goals from Wallace Howells replying for the visitors.

Two home defeats for Hakin United, 0-2 and 0-4, and two 5-0 away defeats for Fishguard Sports saw Hakin’s midweek trip to Milford United on Wednesday 1/4 become a critical fixture. Hakin won the game 1-0 and although Fishguard Sports picked up a point with a 2-2 draw at home to Monkton Swifts on 4/4, their final game of the season on Tuesday 14 th April saw them travel to play Milford United. A 3-1 win for the Robins saw the Sports relegated to division 2 after a thirty year stay in the first division. Newcastle Emlyn finished comfortably bottom only winning 3 and drawing 4 games all season.

Second Division

The second division saw contrasting starts for those teams relegated from division one in the previous year with Milford Athletic being top at the end of September having won five drawn one and lost one, a 1-0 away defeat to St Ishmaels, in their first seven games, whilst Angle had won one, drawn one and lost six of their first eight games that not surprisingly saw them lay second from bottom of the table.

The two promoted sides Manorbier United and Letterston had both started well with Manorbier only suffering one defeat in their first five games, a 1-0 away defeat to the Athletic on the opening day of the season with Barry Davies being the lone goal scorer, with Letterson boasting a similar record with their only defeat coming against near rivals Goodwick United II where goals from Peter Harries and Mike Robb saw a 2-0 home success.

Milford Athletic’s good start turned into an excellent one and at the turn of the year they had only dropped a further two points, a 1-1 draw at home to RAF Brawdy in September when Tim Phillips had given them the lead only for Ally Barnes to equalise for the airmen, and a further 1-1 draw in December against MHPC with John Rackley scoring for the oilmen and Barry Clark replying for the Athletic.

Their most emphatic win had been a 5-0 thumping of Angle with goals from George Hawkridge, Brian Mathias, Barry Davies, Barry Clark and Tim Phillips. Despite this fine form it was Manorbier United who sat top at the halfway stage, two points clear of the Athletic although they had played three games more. Their best wins in the first half of the season had been two victories against Fishguard Sports II, a 7-2 win in August with Kiki Lewis scoring five with one each for Robert Izzard and Robert Bowker, and then a 10-1 success at St Mary’s in December with three for Ray Coates, two each for Terry Jones, Lee Harries and Steve Moss and one for Rob Izzard.

Thus the table at the end of December looked as follows, with the top two looking well in line for promotion.

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Manorbier United 16 11 4 1 48 21 27 26 2 Milford Athletic 14 11 2 1 39 15 24 24 3 Letterston 16 8 3 5 45 32 13 19 4 Goodwick United II 14 7 3 4 26 18 8 17 5 Pennar Robins 14 7 3 4 25 21 4 17 6 RAF Brawdy 14 6 4 4 48 32 16 16 7 St Ishmaels 14 7 2 5 23 21 2 16 8 MHPC 15 5 5 5 41 42 -1 15 9 Neyland 14 6 2 6 40 33 7 14 10 Monkton Swifts II 14 4 4 6 34 30 4 12 11 Kilgetty II 17 3 4 10 26 44 -18 10 12 Angle 15 4 1 10 25 44 -19 9 13 Fishguard Sports II 14 2 3 9 15 51 -36 7 14 Merlins Bridge II 15 1 2 12 13 44 -31 4

One game worth noting in November was a 6-6 draw between Letterston and Neyland. Lyn Lewis (three), Freddy Garton (two) and Will Nicholas scored for Letterston with Jeff Button (two), Mike Lampard (two), John Price and Peter Burton scoring for the visitors.

Early in the new year Manorbier United suffered a slight wobble with a 2-1 home defeat to MHPC (Kiki Lewis/Paul John, Paul Bowen), followed by a 4-2 home defeat to St Ishmaels (Kiki Lewis, Terry O’Donnell/Phillip Griffiths (two), Alan Proctor & Glyn Griffiths). This saw them lose top spot to the Athletic who although level on points had four games in hand.

The Athletic themselves then suffered a slight loss of form with only two points in three games following a 2-2 draw at home to Monkton Swifts II (Adrian Dark, Mike Harteveld/ Charlie Evans, Richard Oliver), a 0-0 home draw with RAF Brawdy and then a 3-0 away defeat against Monkton thanks to two goals from Steven Stewart and one from Steven Phillips.

However a week later a 3-1 victory away at Angle with goals from Brian Mathias, Terry Frank and Barry Davies saw them go on a five game winning streak with the championship being sealed with a 6-1 win against Pennar Robins on 4/4 in which Barry Smith led the scoring with a hat-trick, with Jeff Hicks, Barry Davies and Barry Clark completing the scoring.

Manorbier United clinched the runners up spot on the Friday before the Senior Cup final with a 2-1 win against the only side that could catch them, RAF Brawdy, thus sealing back to back promotions.

At the other end of the table Fishguard Sports II suffered the same fate as their first team with relegation to division three alongside another reserve team Merlins Bridge II.

Third Division

The early season pace setters in the third division were Johnston II who despite losing their second game of the season to Haverfordwest County, went on a run that saw them drop only four points in their first 13 games. This run included taking the last remaining unbeaten record in the league when they beat Steynton United 3-2 on Sunday 16/11 (their firsts had been home the previous day in the WWFA cup). Up to this point Steynton had won five and drawn five of their first ten games with their biggest win being a 6-1 success away at Pendine with Jimmy Harding (2) and one each from Paul Kingston, Steve Woodgate, Mike Barrett and Robert Turner cancelling out an early strike from Terry Davies that had seen the home team go 1-0 ahead.

Johnston’s best win had come against Camrose who sat fourth in the table when they travelled to the Glebelands to play the league leaders on 1/11. A Martin Davies hat-trick and one each for Dean Boswell, Glen Murray and Mickey Algieri saw the homesters record a comfortable win. Camrose recovered to win two of their next three games, but then only picked up one point from the remaining 24 available!

At this stage Pembroke Boro and Hakin United II were up with the leaders with the Boro putting 14 past a hapless Clarbeston Road with Dekker Thomas netting four, two each for Kevin Hughes, Chris Manning, Mark Grey and Roger Scourfield, with Andrew Davies and Steve Davies with one each completing the route. (Note that the Road fared slightly better in the return only losing 8-1, with Brian Cutler leading the scoring this time with four, resulting in an aggregate 22-2 score for the season).

On the last Saturday in December Johnston lost 2-0 away to Milford Athletic II (Mark O’Keefe and Mike Harteveld) whilst Steynton United won 2-0 at home to Narberth thanks to goals from Steve and Jimmy Harding, leaving the top of the table at the end of the year as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Steynton United 16 10 5 1 36 12 24 25 2 Johnston II 16 11 2 3 47 23 24 24 3 Pembroke Boro 14 10 2 2 59 23 36 22 4 Hakin United II 17 9 4 4 43 32 11 22 5 Haverfordwest County 14 8 2 4 54 28 26 18

In the first two weeks in January Hakin United slipped further off the pace following a 1-1 home draw against Steynton United (Dennis Riley/Jimmy Harding) and then a 3-0 defeat at Johnston where Russell Murray, with a 25 yarder, and Charlie Edwards (two) scored for the homesters.

The Boro suffered a similar fate with a 1-1 draw away to Hakin United and then they also lost 3-0 away to Johnston, thanks to Mickey Algieri, Gwyn Griffiths and a rare Chrissy Collins goal.

Thus going into the final month of the season the table looked as follows with Johnston in pole position but the runners up position looking to be between Pembroke Boro and Steynton United with Haverfordwest County rank outsiders.

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Johnston II 23 18 2 3 77 28 49 38 2 Pembroke Boro 22 15 3 4 89 32 57 33 3 Steynton United 20 12 7 1 45 18 27 31 4 Hakin United II 23 11 7 5 56 39 17 29 5 Llawhaden 20 10 4 6 69 41 28 24 6 Carew II 21 10 4 7 38 32 6 24 7 Haverfordwest County 18 10 3 5 65 34 31 23

Steynton started April with a 1-1 draw away to Clarbeston Road and then a more damaging 3-1 defeat away to St Clears II. The Boro suffered a similar defeat away to Llawhaden and on Friday 10/4 they entertained Haverfordwest County at London Road with the visitors coming away with a crucial 4-3 victory.

On 13/4 Johnston travelled to Pendine and secured a narrow 1-0 win that clinched them the championship. On the 15/4 the Boro lost again, this time to Hakin United 1-0 and when they lost 4-0 to Steynton United three nights later their promotion hopes were over having lost five of their last six games. This put Steynton United in pole position though when they lost 3-2 at home to Carew, and then 2-1 to their only remaining challenger Haverfordwest County, it was the bluebirds who clinched the remaining promotion spot.

At the other end of the table Narberth pulled off a remarkable escape picking up five points from their last four games, which included a 7-0 hammering of Carew in their last game that secured their survival and sent RAF Brawdy II down. Up to this game Carew had won 8 of their last nine games so the defeat came as somewhat a shock to all!

Fourth Division

The two sides who led the way at the half way stage were the sides relegated from division three in the previous season, New Hedges/Saundersfoot II and Solva. The latter named team won nine of their first ten games with their only defeat being a midweek 1-0 defeat away to Letterston in their second game of the season. They also recorded some comfortable away wins scoring 11 at Angle (Paul Heywood (three), Andrew Owen (three), Michael Oliver, Michael Thomas, Jeff Jenkins, Andrew Lavin & Peter Gray) and a further nine at St Ishmaels (Paul Heywood (three), Shaun Young (two), Jeff Jenkins (two), & Andrew Lavin (two)).

On the 6/12 the two sides met at Solva with New Hedges coming away with a 3-1 victory thanks to goals from John Howells, Macolm Brace and an own goal, with Michael Jones replying for Solva. This saw them go top a position they held until the turn of the year when the top of the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 New Hedges/Saundersfoot II 19 14 3 2 74 28 46 31 2 Solva II 18 13 3 2 58 23 35 29 3 St Florence 17 10 4 3 57 22 35 24 4 Letterston II 17 9 5 3 39 24 15 23 5 Camrose II 17 7 6 4 40 33 7 20 6 Pennar Robins II 18 9 2 7 47 43 4 20 7 St Ishmaels II 18 9 2 7 39 38 1 20

On the 24/1 Solva went back top when they beat Kilgetty II 5-0 (Paul Heywood, Lyn Rees, Phil Gale, Andrew Owen and an own goal) and New Hedges/Saundersfoot suffered a surprising 2-1 defeat at 10 th placed Withybush. Chris Hine and Tony Squelch scored for the homesters with 45 year old Cliff Jones replying for the visitors.

A week later the top two met at Saundersfoot with the homesters leading 2-0 with five minutes to go thanks to Macky Brace and an own goal, only for Paul Heywood to score two late goals to earn Solva a point.

This signalled the commencement of a bad run for the seasiders when they failed to win in six games, though they did pick up four draws in this period including another 2-2 draw this time against St Florence who were forcing themselves into the promotion race. Once again they led two nil thanks to a Macky Brace penalty and one from Phillip Nicholls. However a Macky Hart strike and a goal two minutes from time by Bobby Fraser saw the points shared.

Thus going into the last month the top of the table looked as follows:

Pos Team P W D L F A GD Pts 1 Solva II 25 17 6 2 81 34 47 40 2 New Hedges/Saundersfoot II 26 15 7 4 86 42 44 37 3 St Florence 25 14 7 4 80 34 46 35 4 Steynton United II 28 14 6 8 71 49 22 34 5 Camrose II 25 12 9 4 62 43 19 33

Camrose kept their hopes alive with a 2-0 midweek win away at Solva on 2/4, but two days later lost 7-0 at home against Steynton United, with Phillip Thomas netting four of the visitors goals.

However on the Friday before the senior cup final Camrose severely dented St Florence’s hopes with a 3-2 home win whilst New Hedges/Saundersfoot won 4-1 on the same night against St Ishmaels II.

The next set of midweek fixtures on 13/4 virtually decided the promotion issue with Solva beating Cosheston 5-2, New Hedges/Saundersfoot beating Camrose 6-0, and although St Florence beat Letterston 4-0 on the same night, both Solva and New Hedges won on the following Saturday with Solva clinching the championship with a 2-0 win over Angle, and New Hedges winning 3-1 at Neyland.

Spare a thought for Angle II who failed to win in the league all season although they were able to pick up five draws in their 30 games. They lost their first 18 games before picking up their first point in a 1-1 draw at home to Letterston. Tony Jones had given the visitors the lead only for Peter Thomas to equalise for the home team.

Senior Cup

The first round saw four all division ties with no real surprises with the tie of the round being Monkton Swifts’ 4-3 win over Hakin United. Kenny Lawrence (two), John Asparassa, and Dave Dickinson scored for the Swifts with Daisy Picton, Roy Davies and Keith Johnson netting for the visitors. The round saw two local derbies with Goodwick United beating Fishguard Sports 2-0 thanks to goals from Pat Pearce and Mike Delaney, and Kilgetty beating Narberth 1-0 in a replay thanks to a goal from player/manager Graham Jenkins. The other all first division tie saw Carew easily account for Solva, whilst there was an upset at St Clears where the first division side were beaten 2-1 by a last minute goal from David Brown. Colin Leville had given the Robins the lead only for Ray Williams to equalise for the Saints before the late Brown goal saw last year’s runners up fall at the first hurdle.

The second round saw all the first division sides avoid one another with the only division one tie seeing Carew beat Milford United 2-0 thanks to two goals in the first eight minutes from Peter Hall and Jonathan Griffiths. All other ties went to form with the only representative in the quarter finals outside of the first division being the previous rounds giant killers Pennar Robins. Although they beat a second division side in this round it was Milford Athletic who were leading the second division. The first game had ended 0-0 whilst in the replay at Pill Lane saw Barry Clark score for the Atletic with Mike John and Stewart Probert replying for the visitors.

This gave them a quarter final tie against local rivals Monkton Swifts though the cup run was ended thanks to a Roy Davies hat-trick and one from Kenny Lawrence. The tie of the round saw the top two in the first division clash at Merlins Bridge where league leaders Johnston went out 2-1 despite taking the lead through a John Codd goal. A Donald Forrest penalty had equalised for the Bridge before a last minute Mario Rabaiotti header gave the Bridge the win. In the other quarter finals Carew beat local rivals Kilgetty 3-1 with goals from Dave Sefton, Peter Hall and Jonathan Griffiths, and Goodwick United beat New Hedges/Saundersfoot 3-2 with two goals from Stewart Wilson and a penalty from Pat Pearce.

The semi-finals saw Merlins Bridge attempt to make it four finals in a row when they met Monkton Swifts at Carew. The game turned on the arrival of Swifts sub Roy Davies who scored with his first touch and then added a second ten minutes later to deny the Bridge a quartet of finals. The other semi held at Brawdy saw Goodwick United twice come from behind to earn a replay. Dai Sefton had put Carew ahead only for Pat Pearce to equalise. Peter Hall then put Carew back in the lead but a handball on the goal line by Mike Allen gave Pearce the opportunity to equalise from the penalty spot which he duly did. The replay at Bush camp was played out in torrential rain and although Jon Griffiths gave Carew the lead, two goals either side of half time from Brian Morris and Mike Robb saw Goodwick take the lead. Stewart Wilson then increased the lead and although Clive Cole struck one back with two minutes remaining it was Goodwick who made it to their first final since 1954-55.

The final played at Marble Hall ended as a very one sided affair with an outstanding Kenny Lawrence netting four of his sides five goals. Graham Brown had started the scoring off before Lawrence got his first eight minutes before half time. The Swifts then went 5-0 up before substitute Keith Swales scored a consolation goal for Goodwick in the dying minutes. Second Division Cup

The second division cup saw a major shock in the first round when high flying Milford Athletic crashed out at home to 12 th placed Angle 3-1 at Pill Lane. Norman Cook had given Angle the lead only for Alan Buckingham to equalise, before goals from Dai John and Dai Fisher gave Angle their surprise win. RAF Brawdy needed a replay to beat Goodwick United II 1-0 thanks to an 88 th minute winner from Micky Burns.

In the second round it took RAF Brawdy another replay to overcome Angle 2-1 after the first game had ended 1-1 with Norman Cook netting for Angle and Bob Francis for the RAF. In the replay another Francis goal and one from Sparrow Glynn gave the airmen victory.

The semi-finals saw St Ishmaels hammer Monkton Swifts II 5-0 with a hat-trick from Alan Proctor and further goals from Graham Warlow and Glyn Griffiths, whilst the other saw RAF Brawdy once again require a replay to beat Manorbier United. The first game ended 1-1 with goals from Bob Francis and Lee Harries, but hat-tricks in the replay from Mick Gosney and Sparrow Glynn saw the airmen reach the final 6-3.

The final at the Bridge Meadow, a repeat of the 1978-79 final, saw the airmen record a comfortable 3-0 victory with two goals from Mick Gosney, one being a last minute penalty, and one from Jenkins sealing the victory. Third Division Cup

League champions Johnston II failed to make it a league and cup double when the lost to local rivals Steynton United 2-1 at the final at the Bridge Meadow. Gwyn Griffiths had given Johnston the lead only for Paul Kingston to equalise five minutes from time. With a replay looking on the cards and with only five minutes of extra time remaining Jimmy Harding rounded the young Johnston keeper Chris Craig and slotted the ball home to give the Milford side the victory and some compensation for missing out on promotion.

In the semis Johnston had overcome a Narberth II team who had led 3-0 thanks to a Colin Hallwood hat-trick only for a Glen Murray goal in the final minute sealing a remarkable 5-4 victory for Johnston. Gwyn Griffiths, Mick Algieri, Paul Phillips and another Murray goal had been the other Johnston scorers with Nigel Thomas netting the other Narberth goal. Steynton United had beaten Haverfordwest County 3-0 in the other semi thanks to goals from Jimmy Harding, Steve Woodgate and Kelvin Townsend.

Fourth Division Cup

The fourth division cup saw the two top teams in the league crash out in the first round, Solva II suffering a 3-2 home defeat to Steynton United II, and New Hedges/Saundersfoot II crashing out 1-0 Kilgetty III who lay 15 th in the league. Terry Picton had scored the last minute goal to give Kilgetty the victory whilst goals from Billy Howlin, Dave Phillips and Phillip Broome had given Steynton their victory.

The first round was also notable for a 1-0 win for Angle II over Pennar Robins II, their only win of the season, and achieved thanks to a Richard Roch goal.

With the two favourites out of the competition St Florence and Steynton United became the competition favourites and when they drew each other in the second round it took a replay to separate the teams. Paul Griffiths (two), Harvet Elliott and Colwyn Hart scored for the Saints in the replay with John Lewis, Steve Thomas and David Phillips scoring for Steynton.

The final played at London Road turned out to be a cracker with Pembroke Power Station beating St Florence 4-3. Billy Jones (two), Mike Lewis and Phillip Hughes scored for the powermen with Peter Griffiths, Robbie Frazer and Paul Griffiths replying for the Saints who had led 3-1 with 15 minutes to go only for Jones to hit the winner a minute from time.

WWFA Intermediate Cup

Monkton Swifts proved to be the best of the clubs making the quarter final when they lost to 2-1 away to Bonymaen Colts. They had reached this stage with a 10-1 defeat of Cimla Athletic with Roy Davies and Kenny Lawrence netting hat-tricks; a 3-2 home win over Kilgetty when Richard Jones and Kenny Lawrence had given the Swifts a 2-0 lead only for Ronnie Hurst and Paul Hancock to equalise, before Roy Davies sealed the win. They were drawn at home again in the third round when goals from Kenny Lawrence and Graham Brown saw them make the quarter finals.

BSC Landore knocked out two first division sides both after the first tie had ended in a draw. In the second round they defeated Johnston 2-1 after the first game had ended 2-2. Martin Davies and Mike Griffiths had scored for Johnston though it was a penalty save by Steve James that had kept the home team in the competition. In the replay a lone Colin Thorpe goal was not enough to keep the division one leaders in the competition.

In the next round goals from Peter Hall and Dai Sefton had earned Carew a hard earned draw away at Landore but they could not make home advantage count in the replay when they lost 2-0.

In the final Ragged School beat Bonymaen Colts.
