NEWS & NOTES

3rd Grade Scarecrow Contest Every year the town of Candor puts on a scarecrow contest through the Candor Chamber of Commerce, and this year the 3rd-grade classes won! We worked together to build a set of scarecrows that modeled our school’s 5 Super Strengths! One scarecrow modeled Mindfulness through meditation. We learn that being mindful helps us to be present and in the moment. The brain scarecrow, modeled Growth Mindset, which is the belief that you can get better at anything with hard work and the right attitude. We had a scarecrow that was demonstrating Perseverance, the act of never giving up. The last two represented Empathy and Gratitude qualities we feel are good and necessary for everyone to have. We always love doing this contest with our students. It is a great way to practice teamwork and cooperation. We hope it is an experience they will never forget! If you didn’t get to see our amazing work check it out! Until next year!

NEWS & NOTES

On Friday, November 1st, Candor Elementary welcomed local author/illustrator, Daniel Jude Miller.

Students enjoyed his morning presentations and were intrigued by his mysterious, monstrous box. He had lunch with second-grade interviewers and did three hands-on workshops in the afternoon. Mr. Miller shared some writing and illustrating tips along with some “growth mindset” advice. Sixth-grade students made the following remarks: “Mr. Miller is creative.” “He was very relatable.” “I liked his tip about not tracing.”

FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

A Message from the High School Principal:

It’s hard to believe we are a quarter of the way through the school year! We’re off to a great start, and I look forward to another positive and productive year. Below I would like to share a couple of key factors for student success:

As always, we strongly encourage good attendance. The high school teachers are taking the initiative to reach out and work with parents to see if they can support and assist with attendance in any way possible. As I have shared in our newsletter before, one of the key factors in finding success at school is making sure students are in attendance every day possible. There is a direct correlation to poor attendance and low grades, so I would ask parents to do your best to get your child to school on time every day. If you have a legitimate absence and must be tardy or absent, please be sure to bring in a note the next day of attendance. Working together to make sure students are at school and on time is key to academic success, and I appreciate your help with this.

We are very fortunate that the Jr/Sr High School schedule allows our students time to meet with teachers at the end of the day for extra help. If your child is struggling with a class and would like to get some help, have them ask their teacher if they can stay after school from 2:20 to 3:00 Monday - Thursday. This is a great opportunity to get more individualized instruction.

As always, feel free to reach out to Student Services or the High School Office if you have any questions or concerns. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season!

Wayne Aman Jr/Sr High School Principal

FROM THE ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL

A Message from the Elementary School Principal:

Dear Candor Elementary Parents and Families, It has been a great first 10 weeks of school at Candor Elementary! Thank you to all who attended Open House. It was wonderful to see the students full of pride as they showed their families and loved ones around their school. Thank you also to those who attended our annual Halloween parade. We appreciate your flexibility when we decided to hold the parade inside in anticipation of rain. Everything went smoothly, and the students were able to enjoy a wonderful Halloween celebration. Thank you again for the combined efforts of faculty, staff and families so we could continue this wonderful tradition for our students. During the months of September and October, the students did a great job learning about and practicing Mindfulness strategies. In November, we are launching our second Super Strength, Growth Mindset. Having a Growth Mindset means believing that you can get better at anything with hard work and practice. Be sure to ask your child about the new ways they are learning to show they have a Growth Mindset. As you know, Candor Elementary has a monthly grade level attendance challenge this year. The 3rd graders won the attendance challenge for the month of October with a 98% attendance rate! They enjoyed their reward of an ice cream party on November 1st. The November attendance challenge is underway! We appreciate your cooperation with our daily pickup procedures at the elementary school. Please continue to drive through the parent pickup loop on the playground side of the building if you are picking your child up at the 3:05 pickup area. If you wish to pick up your child after 3:15, please meet them up at the flagpole in front of the High School. We close the Elementary campus to all traffic (pedestrians and vehicles) at 3:15 to ensure a smooth and safe dismissal process. Be sure to call the Elementary School or send a note with your child to report any change in dismissal plans. Thank you again for your understanding and cooperation with the dismissal process. The school bus is part of our school environment. The behavior expectations on the school bus are the same as the expectations in the school building. At Candor Elementary School we will be Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Caring. Please review these expectations with your child at home to help promote positive behavior on the school bus. As always, I am extremely proud to be a part of the Candor Elementary School Community. I am especially proud of the many accomplishments of our students on a daily basis. Thank you for your continued partnership in providing your child with the best possible educational experience. Please feel free to contact Mr. Ahart, myself, or your child’s teacher if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you during Parent/Teacher Conferences!

Sincerely, Mrs. Volpicelli

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION

Dear Candor School Families, We are just completing our first quarter of the 2019-2020 school year, and I wanted to once again share our district goals...

Positive Educational Environment Distinctive Academic Achievement

Healthy Engaged

Safe Challenged

Supported Meaning & Accomplishment

This year we are focusing on Distinctive Academic Achievement by providing intentional opportunities for students to develop their 4 C’s. Our first step was to adopt what we believe each of the 4 C’s means (see below). Now that we have common district definitions, grade levels and departments can create age-appropriate, student-friendly definitions to share with our students.

Collaboration Creativity

Collaboration occurs when two or more Creativity is the ability to produce new,

people work together to accomplish a diverse, and unique ideas. Thinking shared, common goal. creatively means looking at things from a different perspective and not be restricted by rules, customs, or norms.

Critical Thinking Communication

Critical thinking involves logical thinking Communication is expressing thoughts and reasoning to solve problems or clearly, concisely articulating opinions, understand a situation. communicating coherent instructions, and

motivating others through verbal and nonverbal expression.

All of us want to help our children succeed in life. We believe a focus on the 4 C’s is essential to developing strong and creative learners who are prepared for success. Thank you for your continued support. If there is ever anything I can help with, please contact me at [email protected].

Respectfully, Mrs. Nichols

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT NEWS

CCS Athletics

Athletic Director: Pete Ahart [email protected]

Hello families! Fall has been a busy yet exciting time for Candor/SVEC athletics! I would like to start by saying thank you to everyone who came out and supported our student-athletes and coaches during those warm or cold, wet or dry contests- the support was certainly felt! Additionally, I’d like to thank our Booster Club for their donations to our programs, as well as the donations of the flowers for each of our Senior Nights and Homecoming events our students took part in. Coach Z and our cross-country program would also like to thank The Iron Kettle Farm for hosting our home cross country meet, and Senior Night this fall as well as maintaining the course for the athletes- we greatly appreciate it! Our teams had a very successful fall season with many postseason appearances by the boy’s and girls’ soccer teams, member(s) of the cross-country team, field hockey team, and volleyball team. Our JV and Varsity volleyball teams took home the IAC Championships this season as well! As I write this newsletter our varsity volleyball team is preparing for their postseason sectional run, with a first-round BYE…Good luck to coach Quinlan and the team! Modified Volleyball and modified boys’ basketball have begun with JV and Varsity Winter practices getting underway November 11th. The Winter seasons will be in full swing, and before we know it, we will have all fifteen teams up and running! We are in for an exciting, eventful, and supportive winter. Please be sure to do your part as a spectator to ensure sportsmanship is Priority One. THANK YOU.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS

The Selection Process for future members will begin in December and will be completed by the end of February 2020. It will culminate with the Induction Ceremony March 12, 2020, at 6:30 pm in the high school auditorium. The scholastically eligible students will receive a letter and application from Ms. Westervelt prior to the holiday break. Students in grades 10 – 12 are eligible to apply if their overall GPA is at least 87%. If the student chooses, they can submit their application to be further evaluated on the three additional criteria of leadership, character, and service. The selection process uses a uniform point system, guided by a very specific rubric. The use of an objective and fair system for selection is our highest priority. All students who are eligible and apply will be notified of their selection to be a member of the club, through receiving a letter via the USPS mail, at least a week prior to the induction ceremony.

The National Honor Society is focusing on multiple community service projects this year. We participated in a town roadside clean up in September. We will host two blood drives again this year. One will be on November 15, 2019, and the second on March 25, 2020, both in the high school auditorium between 7:45 am and 1:15 pm. The public is welcome to donate, after approval through signing in and obtaining a visitor’s pass from the high school office. For the seventh year in a row, we are offering enrichment activities to the sixth-grade students at the end of their school day. Each member has chosen an activity that they are interested and knowledgeable in that they can teach. We are very excited about this opportunity to teach things such as line dancing, volleyball, sign language, magnet and electricity, planting seeds, and hearing about the Ukraine and Germany from our exchange students!

NYSSMA 2019 Each year in late September, approximately 240 students are notified that they are selected to participate in the Zone 3 NYSSMA Conference Area All-State music groups. The All-State experience begins with a music educator, his or her student, and an accompanist spending countless hours preparing a NYSSMA solo which must be selected from repertoire lists in the current manual. Last spring, over 6,500 students from NYSSMA Zone 3 prepared solos for evaluations in the hope of being selected. This fall, Lilly Hobi, Angelina Porras, Isabella Porras, and Jessica Wells received high scores on their evaluations and were chosen to participate in the NYSSMA Zone 3 Area All-State Junior High Treble Chorus.

Candor Community Christmas Concert

The Candor Community Chorus will usher in the winter holiday season with their Christmas concert on Saturday, December 14, at 7 pm in the Candor High School Auditorium, Academy Street.

This year’s theme is “He Is Born” and features several new pieces. “The Holding Carol” brings together the themes of joy, peace, and love in a tender tune that underscores the promise of Christmas. Also new to the program are a gorgeous Dan Forrest arrangement of “The First Noel” and “People Look East”. Some favorites from past years include “Beautiful December”, “Candlelight”, “He Is Born” and “Festival Sanctus”.

A carol sing is planned for intermission and there will once again be raffle baskets. Dave Jackson directs the program, accompanied by Brenda Yeier at the piano. Admission is free, and the chorus gratefully accepts donations to support their music library and scholarship program.
