The teachers were characters from Toy Story, and the kids’ costumes ranged from giant blow-up dinosaurs to homemade dog costumes and zombie soccer players! Pictures of more Halloween fun are on the next two pages. DECEMBER 2019 CANDOR CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS PAGE 6 NEWS & NOTES 3rd Grade Scarecrow Contest Every year the town of Candor puts on a scarecrow contest through the Candor Chamber of Commerce, and this year the 3rd-grade classes won! We worked together to build a set of scarecrows that modeled our school’s 5 Super Strengths! One scarecrow modeled Mindfulness through meditation. We learn that being mindful helps us to be present and in the moment. The brain scarecrow, modeled Growth Mindset, which is the belief that you can get better at anything with hard work and the right attitude. We had a scarecrow that was demonstrating Perseverance, the act of never giving up. The last two represented Empathy and Gratitude qualities we feel are good and necessary for everyone to have. We always love doing this contest with our students. It is a great way to practice teamwork and cooperation. We hope it is an experience they will never forget! If you didn’t get to see our amazing work check it out! Until next year! ~ The Third Grade Team ~ DECEMBER 2019 CANDOR CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS PAGE 7 NEWS & NOTES On Friday, November 1st, Candor Elementary welcomed local author/illustrator, Daniel Jude Miller. Students enjoyed his morning presentations and were intrigued by his mysterious, monstrous box. He had lunch with second-grade interviewers and did three hands-on workshops in the afternoon. Mr. Miller shared some writing and illustrating tips along with some “growth mindset” advice. Sixth-grade students made the following remarks: “Mr. Miller is creative.” “He was very relatable.” “I liked his tip about not tracing.” To find out more about Mr. Miller and his work, please visit his site: djudemiller.com. We’re off to a great start, and I look forward to another positive and productive year. Below I would like to share a couple of key factors for student success: As always, we strongly encourage good attendance. The high school teachers are taking the initiative to reach out and work with parents to see if they can support and assist with attendance in any way possible. As I have shared in our newsletter before, one of the key factors in finding success at school is making sure students are in attendance every day possible. There is a direct correlation to poor attendance and low grades, so I would ask parents to do your best to get your child to school on time every day.
