Musculoskeletal health and physical activity campaign

The Staff Health, Safety and Wellbeing team have launched a campaign asking staff to: ‘get on your feet’. We explained that sitting at your desk all day can put you at risk of musculoskeletal health problems which affect your bones and joints.

We shared articles, posters, leaflets and links to advice about keeping your bones and joints moving, exercise and activity classes throughout Ayrshire and Arran, information about healthy feet , healthy work stations, and how to avoid risks.

We sent out messages in daily digest and eNews and held promotional stalls in the dining rooms from Monday 25 April 2016 to 3 May 2016. We also arranged and advertised walks at the woodland walks at and encouraged staff to participate in the Step Count challenge (see below for more information).

The campaign will continue into June, including a further article from the physiotherapy department explaining the different ways you can protect yourself from developing MSK disorders at work and where to get support if you do develop a problem.

Staff health, safety and wellbeing team – Step Count Challenge

As part of the MSK health and physical activity campaign aimed at encouraging staff to ‘Get on your feet’, NHS Ayrshire & Arran are taking part in the Paths for All Step Count Challenge. More than 100 teams, each consisting of five members, have signed up to see who can take the most steps in an eight-week challenge. As of week three, the teams had taken 790,040,501 steps, or walked 37,424 miles.

One of NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s teams, ‘Happy Feet’, was, at that point, top of the Paths for All leader board out of more than 800 teams across Scotland. Staff members have been seen out running before and after work, walking during lunch breaks, and having walking meetings.

Combined Assessment Unit – University Hospital Crosshouse

The Combined Assessment Unit at University Hospital Crosshouse opened to patients on Saturday 23 April 2016. In the run up to the opening we held an open day for members of the public, staff and invited guests on Friday 22 April. During the day more than 100 people took the opportunity to tour the unit before it opened to patients. Staff also took part in a cake and ribbon cutting to mark the unit as being open.

The CAU is a 24-hour unit with ten rapid assessment spaces, 11 ambulatory care spaces, and 35 single en-suite rooms to provide treatment, with most patients only staying in the unit up to a maximum of 48 hours. The CAU will receive patients who have been referred by their family doctor and has facilities to assess and treat patients so that only those who need further inpatient care are admitted to hospital. Other patients can receive treatment in the CAU and return safely to their own homes as soon as possible.

Work on the CAU at has already started, with a completion date scheduled for spring 2017.

Woodland View

Woodland View officially welcomed its first patient on Friday 6 May at a special ribbon- cutting ceremony. During the month of May staff will be organising the transfer of patients and equipment from facilities at Ayrshire Central Hospital, , University Hospital Crosshouse and Ailsa Hospital.

Woodland View’s origins began in 2007 as the consultation on the relocation of mental health services with ‘Mind your health’. It has culminated into a £46 million state-of-the-art facility on the Ayrshire Central Hospital site in Irvine.

The Woodland View programme team has been working for the past four years to successfully deliver the project, together with the project’s partner, Balfour Beatty. Construction began in August 2014 and was officially handed over to NHS Ayrshire & Arran on Friday 1 April. It has been delivered on time and within budget.

During a week of open day events, 1,086 members of staff, the public, patients, service- users, NHS Board members and stakeholders visited the state-of-the-art facilities. The tours included the main entrance, the Brambles cafe, the ward area for older patients and those with complex needs, a ward area for mental health patients, outside courtyards, outpatients department, the Sanctuary (multi-faith room) and rehabilitation areas.

Ayrshire Achieves 2016

Nominations for Ayrshire Achieves 2016 opened on 16 March and close on 20 May 2016. We are continuing to publicise the awards on social media, through the press and the ads on West FM started on 9 May and will run until the closing date. We are also using internal communications channels to encourage staff to nominate. The judging panel will meet on 9 June and the awards ceremony will take place on 30 June in the dining room at University Hospital Ayr.

Ayrshire Achieves 2016, is funded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Charity Fund and sponsored by Bauer Holdings (West Sound and WestFM), the Royal College of Nursing and UNISON.

Annual bowel screening awareness event

NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s eighth annual bowel screening awareness event to mark Bowel Cancer Awareness Month was held on 27 April. The popular event attracted more than 60 people. This year’s topics for discussion ranged from the importance of diet and exercise in cancer prevention, to early warning signs, symptoms and what happens if you need to come into hospital.

Delegates also had a chance to visit the information stands – these included MacMillan, Bowel Cancer UK, Fresh Air-shire, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and health promotion. The event also focussed on the new easier bowel screening test, being introduced next year. The new test only requires one sample, instead of three, which will hopefully make it easier for people to do and increase the uptake of the bowel screening test in Ayrshire.
