The conference focuses on best practices, up-to-date research, and ideas, strategies and activities to support your daily work on behalf of Michigan’s young children and their families. Please join us for the general sessions held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings that will inform and energize you. Thursday’s keynote, Unlocking the Creative Spirit will kick-off the conference with Dan Hodgins. On Friday, Ana DeHoyos O’Connor presents Teacher Soup and on Saturday, Rhonda Meyers, offers Stand in Your Truth! The conference schedule provides you with many choices. The workshops are organized by category to make your selection process easier and are designed to provide everyone, regardless of their role or experience, with information to support and extend their knowledge and enhance their practice. The 13th Annual Michigan AEYC Silent Auction, in the commercial exhibit area, is filled with amazing treasures graciously donated by Michigan AEYC members, exhibitors, business partners, and others. All proceeds from the auction go to the Student Scholarship Fund. Last year’s Silent Auction raised almost $6,000! Bid early, bid often, bid high! I am delighted to share that we have several exciting opportunities available for Michigan AEYC members at this year’s conference! Learn about the opportunities and benefits that await you as a Michigan AEYC member. The Week of the Young Child is April 8–12, which is also the week of the conference. Michigan AEYC is planning a surprise at the beginning of Thursday’s general session. Come prepared to celebrate! All conference attendees are invited to attend Friday Night Fun! featuring a DJ, karaoke, games and trivia, in the Ambassador Ballroom, Amway Hotel, 8:00–11:00 pm. Dance, sing, socialize, and play games! Cash bar available. The National Association for the Education of Young Children accredits child care center programs. The National Association for Family Child Care accredits family and group home child care programs. 4 Keynote Presenters Daniel J. Hodgins Author and Early Childhood Consultant Dan Hodgins is an exceptional, internationally renowned presenter and author of two books, Changing the Classroom, Not the Child and Get Over It, Relearning Guidance Practices. As a consultant, he helps educators and parents understand research-based theory and how to adapt curriculum and environments to support the continued development of children and families. In his 30+ years of experience he has been a teacher, director, educator and parent, and is the former Coordinator of Early Childhood Education at Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan. Ana DeHoyos O'Connor Associate Professor of Early Childhood, San Antonio College Ana DeHoyos O’Connor has been in the field of early childhood for over twenty-five years, as a teacher, home visitor, instructor and trainer. As a classroom teacher, she worked with toddlers through school age in a bilingual program and at a campus lab center. She has worked as a staff trainer/mentor, an early intervention specialist, and a Head Start consultant. Ana is an active early childhood advocate serving on her local AEYC board, the T.E.A.C.H. National Board and the T.E.A.C.H. Texas board. Her best job is being the mother of two adult daughters, grandmother of three granddaughters and a wife who enjoys gardening with her husband. Rhonda J. Meyers CEO, Heartfelt Impressions Rhonda J. Meyers is recognized statewide as a passionate and committed leader in the field of early childhood education. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Hope College in Psychology and Sociology and a Master’s Degree from Oakland University in Early Childhood Education. Rhonda is co-owner of Heartfelt Impressions Learning Centers and a business consultant and training specialist. For over 28 years, Rhonda has committed herself to championing quality early education. As a working mom, she considers her greatest accomplishment to be raising five amazing kids. Betty Garlick Lifetime Achievement Award Marcia Rysztak Retired Professor of Child Development and Early Childhood Lansing Community College Marcia Rysztak has had a devoted career as an advocate for young children and their families. Her story of advocacy has reached far beyond the college community, actively collaborating with local, state and national partners. For the majority of her career, Marcia was employed at Lansing Community College where she demonstrated leadership and a progressive approach, building the college’s program to become one of the first NAEYC accredited associate degree programs in Michigan with more than 30 courses and 20 instructors. Her vision of early childhood education has been a model for educators statewide and nationally. One of Marcia’s major accomplishments was implementing an onsite early childhood lab school at LCC, aligned with the Reggio philosophy.
