Visit Our Greenhouse! Refresh your gardening spirit for fall and winter with indoor plants. Plants clean air and provide more oxygen indoors. We have a great selection of houseplants. And we special order if you don’t find what you need! Here are some tips for taking care of new house plants and the plants al- ready in your home. Large houseplants go through a lot of shock from being moved AND transplanted (especially ficuses). Wait to repot houseplants until they are potbound and roots are coming out the bottom of the pot which can take a year or more. Make sure to water houseplants thoroughly when you do water. You want to get the entire root ball wet. A 14" diameter pot may need as much as 2-4 gallons of water. One cup of water won’t do for most houseplants, even a six inch pot can require more. Try submerging the plants’ pot for 10-15 minutes to give a nice soak to plants that require more water. Let the water come over the pot rim and when the soil stops bubbling, all the air pockets are gone and the plant has received a good wetting. Take your indoor plant outside once in a while for a good hosing off and watering with your hose. Remember to dump out the excess water from the saucer or container the plant sits in to avoid root rot and fungus gnats. Use a turkey baster to remove excess water under large plants. The extra water contains wastes so throw it out. As with all plants, don’t be afraid to feel down into the soil a couple inches with your fingers. There is no better way to understand why your plant is thriving or failing then by touching its soil. Gardening is all about the dirt, even indoors! Always ask questions and bring in samples of your plant problems to Alden Lane BEFORE your plant is in trouble. We may be able to save a life and enrich yours! In The Garden Store Sample the peppery scent of Peppercorn potpourri, room spray, and candle also from Aromitique. Forcing Hyacinths in Vases This is prime time to select and begin forcing a hyacinth bulb in a glass forcing jar. You can enjoy the fragrance and color of hyacinths all winter. The Bulbs are easily forced into bloom using a specially designed forcing glass. You need only water and cool temperatures, (no soil.) The glass supports the hyacinth bulb just above the water allowing the roots to fill the glass below. Growing Instructions: • Place hyacinth bulb in glass; tip pointing up. • Fill the glass with water as close as possible to the bottom of the bulb without touching it. If the water is too low, the roots may dry out; if too high, the bulb may rot. • Place glass in a cool, dark, well ventilated area where the temperature stays between 40 and 50 degrees. (Garage, basement, refrigerator.) Do not let freeze. • Keep in storage for 13 weeks. Check weekly and maintain water level just below the bulb. Roots will fill the glass and a shoot will appear from the tip of the bulb. • After 13 weeks, when the shoot is 2 to 3 inches high, bring into a warm room, (60 to 70 degrees.) Keep in an area with filtered light until the shoot turns green, and then place in full sunlight or bright light. • Your hyacinth will fill your home with color and fragrance in 2 to 3 weeks. Once in bloom, keep it from direct heat to prolong flowering. • When your bulb is finished blooming, discard it, use the vase for cut flowers, and then refill it with a new hyacinth bulb next fall. It’s Fall…Time For Planting In California California has two major planting seasons – spring and fall. Most Californians are familiar with the spring planting season. Fall has remained somewhat of a mystery to the planting public. Well, let’s clear up that mystery right now! Fall is for planting in California because: ✔ The days are cooler but the soil has retained warmth so the roots of newly planted trees and shrubs are encour- aged to grow and anchor themselves. ✔ California natives can be planted now for maximum results. These hardy trees and shrubs will be drought tolerant by the time next summer’s heat rolls around. Do not plant them near the lawn or other highly watered areas. Come see our selection. ✔ New plantings have a chance to become firmly established before facing the heat of late spring and sum- mer. ✔ It’s easier to prepare the soil because the early rains have softened it. ✔ The rains help do the watering for you! So as you can see there are lots of great reasons for you to be armed with gardening tools, bulbs, bedding plants and land- scape plans for fall plantings. Visit our web page for helpful planting instruc- tions, or come in for a flier.

Revitalize Your Lawn & Save! SIX EASY STEPS STEP 1 – Aerate. Remove cores of soil from your lawn to allow better water penetration and food absorption. STEP 2 – Thatch. Use an Ames thatch rake to remove the thatch-mat buildup that repels water and harbors disease. Using a push-pull vacuum cleaner motion removes this harmful layer of dead grass. Reg. $33.99, NOW $28.87. STEP 3 – Apply Master’s Soil Penetrant. The soil penetrant when added to water and sprayed over the lawn allows moisture to move more freely in our heavy clay soil, reaching thirsty roots. Only $4.99 pt. Covers 600 square feet. STEP 4 – Enrich the Soil. Enrich your lawn by spreading a thin layer of Master Nursery’s Gold Rush over the top. This organic blend of Fir Bark mulch and chicken manure nourishes and enriches tired soil. Reg. $8.99 for a 2 cu. ft. bag; Buy 5 bags for the price of 4. (It’s like getting the 5th bag free.) If you would like to thicken your lawn by adding new lawn seed proceed with steps 5 & 6. STEP 5 – Apply Master’s Starter Fertilizer. To speed early development of seeding grass roots and stems use Master’s Starter Fertilizer. It will hasten early development and thickening of new grass. Formulated to use when reseeding or laying sod or when seeding a new lawn, it will not burn your grass. Just apply with spreader on soil before sodding or seeding just as if you were fertilizing an existing lawn. A 20 lb. bag will cover 1500 square feet – only $13.99. STEP 6 – Add Seed to Thicken. Mow your existing lawn short then spread either Alden Lane Nursery’s Suburban or Nugget Turf Seed over your renovated lawn. Using a spreader that Alden Lane Nursery loans out, apply the seed at one half the rate recommended for new lawns. Keep damp until seed germination. Pacific Lawn Sod For Bonsai and Medallion (Fescues), and Penn Blue Sport sod. Only 28 cents per sq. ft. (for 207+ sq. ft.) Plant Sasanqua Camellias One of the prettiest and most often overlooked shrubs to plant for late fall and winter color is the Camellia sasanqua. This cousin of the commonly planted Camellia japonica is more sun tolerant and depending on the variety makes an excellent gracefully branching ground cover or espaliered shrub, informal hedge as well as a good container plant. You might also plant sasanquas under trees to give color to otherwise green backdrops. Alden Lane has received a shipment of heavily budded and some blooming varieties of sasanquas. And it’s the best time to choose them while you can see the actual flower shape and the color. They make a lovely accent in the garden because of their silhouette and abundance of flowers. Come on in to look over our collection and choose one while the selection is highest.

The sun is lower in the sky. Temperatures are a little lower. There still remains 2 to 2½ months before winter rains arrive and temperatures drop significantly. We in northern California are blessed with a second spring and this weather is perfect for planting. You are home now, the summer vacations are behind you. The harshest heat of summer has passed. It really is a good time to put down some roots. A tree shrub or perennial planted now will establish quickly with the nice warm soil. Winter rains will soon take over the watering chores and next spring, a plant that established its roots this fall will be significantly larger than if planted later. Fall is an active growing time. Take advantage of it by doing some gardening or landscaping now. Follow these planting instructions to help you establish full and healthy plants in your garden. How to Plant Trees & Shrubs Water ✦ Dig ✦ Enrich ✦ Feed ✦ Plant ✦ Water

Digging a planting hole is significantly easier if the soil you are working in is moist. Pre-water the area you plan to work in with a gentle, long, slow soak a day or two before you begin planting. All trees are 20% off this month so come in and make a selection now. Tree Staking Guidelines Most trees are top heavy in the wind and require staking at the time of planting. Stakes are generally needed the first 2 years in the landscape until the root system and trunk are well established. The objective is to support the trunk gently, allowing some movement in ordinary breezes. Allowing some movement insures the tree trunk develops necessary strength. The stakes are not meant to tightly restrict movement, but should be standing by for the occasional windstorm that could otherwise break or knock over a tree. LODGE POLES These are the most common and least expensive staking alternative. They are placed in pairs left and right of the tree, and tied with rubber straps. Two stakes are suggested for most trees, the height depends on the particular tree; eight foot poles are fine for most trees; ten foot poles for taller trees. After the planting hole is prepared, but before placing the tree in the hole, drive 2 planting stakes root-ball-width apart into the solid undisturbed soil beneath the hole. Place the stakes north and south of the tree so that they sort of cradle the tree in the prevailing westerly wind. Place the plant between the stakes and finish planting according to the instructions on the reverse side of this flier. Make sure the top of the root ball rests a little higher than the surrounding, original grade. Secure the tree with rubber tree ties just below the first set of branches and also about halfway up the tree trunk, between the ground and the first branch. Don’t secure the tree so tightly that it cannot move in the wind. The stakes and ties are there for support in the wilder weather, but the tree should be allowed to sway and develop strength on its own in ordinary weather. Each fall, re-inspect the lodge poles and ties to be sure they are secure for the winter ahead. REDDY STAKE SYSTEM These are the green metal tree stakes seen around town in industrial or municipal landscapes. The Reddy Stake System is easier to install than lodge poles. The Reddy Stake screws into the ground. Only one pole is needed per tree. Reddy Stakes come in 7 and 9 feet in length. Generally, 7 foot is used for 5 gallon, and 9 foot for larger. After planting your tree, position the Reddy stake 12” away from the tree on the side of the prevailing wind. Use the “L” shaped bar through the hole in the top of the Reddy stake and twist the Reddy Stake into the ground. Complete the installation process to secure the tree according to instructions in the Reddy Stake package. Water your new tree according to the instructions on the opposite side of this form. Fall is the ideal time to seed a lawn or renovate an old one. See the “How To” article in this newsletter. Plant Onion sets for a tasty harvest. Nothing livens up a stew or salad like a tangy onion. This is the time of year when they should be planted. You can start onions either from seed of from “sets” (little bulbs). Fall is a great time for branching out! Spring isn’t the only time to expand your landscaping horizons. The cool days and warm soil of autumn gives all kinds of trees, shrubs, and bulbs a great start. And when you add a little greenery to the scenery, the value of your home blossoms. Plan on planting this fall. Fall is Sweet Pea Planting Season! Sweet peas are wonderful flowers to enjoy both in the garden and as cut flower bouquets in the house. Come in for a flier and select some sweet pea seeds. Last chance for winter vegetables from transplants. We have a great supply of 6 packs. Protect your cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale and brussel sprouts from cabbage worms with Monterey Garden Insect Spray, a safe organic control. Give all the plants in your garden a feeding this month before the dormant season is upon us. Fruit trees can use a shot of Master’s Fruit & Vine fertilizer to provide stored energy for next year’s performance. Shrubs and trees need a feeding of Master’s Formula 49; and roses, azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons should be fertilized with Master Bloom to support a flowering season in the spring. Check tree stakes and rose stakes. High winter winds can damage trees if improperly staked. Fertilize the lawn with Master Green. Your lawn must be green by Thanks- giving to allow it to maintain winter color with monthly feedings. Do any renovation work before the end of the month, as the weather cools so does the soil, if you are renovating or reseeding use Master Green or Master Start fertilizer. Start a Spring Wild Flower Garden before Winter rains come. Wild flower gardening is easy and rewarding. A little plot of soil can be transformed with a few seeds into a bouquet of color and texture.
