Introduction

This volume, first of a projected three volumes, was written and produced under the sponsorship of the Bigelow Society, Inc., a family association incorporated in the state of Michigan, U.S.A. This volume is based on, and quotes freely from, an earlier work. Genealogy of the Bigelow Family of America, 1890, by Gilman Bigelow Howe. In addition, many other resources unknown in 1890 have been used and quoted, thereby adding to the bulk of information on early generations of Bigelow. In writing this book, it was decided after much consideration, to reject the standard NEHG Register system of numbering, which does not adapt well to computer usage and retrieval of information. Instead, a modification of the Henry system of numbering has been used. To explain: The number of digits preceding a person's name in the text indicates the number of generations he is removed from the immigrant ancestor. The immigrant, in this case John Biglo of Watertown, is always identified as #1. His offspring, the second generation, are numbered consecutively 1 through 13, and this digit is added to the father's number, with double-digited children assigned letters of the alphabet. A period is inserted after every fifth digit to allow for easier reading. For example, Samuel, fifth child of John Biglo the immigrant, is 1 5. Isaac, Samuel's ninth child, becomes 1 5 9, the three digits indicating he is in the third generation. 1 John Biglo of Watertown, MA. First generation 15 Samuel Bigelow, John's fifth child. Second generation 159 Isaac Bigelow, Samuel's ninth child. Third generation _ 159B Elisha Bigelow, Isaac's eleventh child. Fourth generation 159BF. Thankful (Bigelow) Sinclair, Elisha's fifteenth child, Fifth generation jj? 159BF.7 George Sinclair, Thankful's seventh child. Sixth generation This cumulative number appears at the left side of the page throughout the volume, both at the beginning of each biography, and again in an individual's list of offspring. If the offspring is to be treated as an adult in a later chapter, an obelisk (t) follows the identification number. Immediately after an individual's name at the opening of a biography, each Bigelow is further identified by complete lineal descent by name from the immigrant, with a superior number indicating the generation; Elisha4 Bigelow (Isaac^, Samuel^, |John*). In addition, the surname has been standardized to the spelling "Bigelow," regardless of the many variants used in either -past or present. " . . . As will be proved in a subsequent chapter, John Biglo, immigrant ancestor of most persons surnamed Biglo, was a son of Randall and Jane ( ) Beageley or Baguley, of the parish of Wrentham, Suffolk, England. The Beageley/Baguley family were newcomers to Wrentham, being a branch of a much older family from Baguley, , England. As early asl243 Richard de Baguley, Lord of Baguley, owned lands in the County of Chester. He married Alice, daughter of Ralph de Verdun. Their heir was Ralph de Baguley, who married a daughter of Hamon de Massey, Baron of Dunham Massey, and owner of lands in Baguley and Ollerton in the parish of , Cheshire. Ralph de Baguley had three sons: John, William, and Hamon. John de Baguley by promogeniture inherited the title and most of the lands. His son William in 1320 inherited from his father and was the builder of the early portions of Baguley Hall. William had three children: John, who died without issue; Ellen, and Isabella. Howe, the Bigelow genealogist, omits Ellen from the family, and gives her husband Sir John Legh to Isabella, adding to the confusion. The Leghs inherited Baguley Hall and it passed from the family. Returning to Ralph de Baguley, his second son, William de Baguley, married Clementia de Chedale; they had one daughter, Isabella, who married Sir Thomas Daniers, so that in that branch also the surname Baguley died out. Ralph's youngest son Hamon de Baguley acquired nearby Ollerton Hall by marriage and is said to have left many descendants, but due to the deterioration (by normal passage of time) of parish records, we are unable to follow Hamon's line from 1300 until the death of a certain Ralph Baguley of Ollerton Hall who died 1540. He left two sons, Randall of Ollerton (married Eleanor , died 1556 leaving two sons), and Nicholas of Newton (died 1558, also leaving two sons). Randall of Ollerton divided his estate between the two sons, Phillip and Robert. Each of these two sons in turn had two sons, so that Ollerton's lands became further diminished by division. Phillip's sons were Randall and Phillip. Robert's sons were Randall and John. Phillip's Randall moved across England to Suffolk, and was resident at Wrentham. He apparently made this move as a married man with two or more children, and in the years following 1603 had five childre n baptised at Wrentham (youngest being John, later of Watertown, MA) before his death in 1626. These four generations of John Biglo's English ancestry were traced through parish records by H.G. Somerby for Poultney Bigelow and Melville M. Bigelow. The chart on the proceeding page will clarify the duplication of names in the family. Concerning the English ancestry of Mary Warren, wife of John Biglo, there has been much misrepresentation and confusion. It was the fashion in the late 1800's to "prove" that one's family was descended from the royal houses in Europe, and the Warren genealogy published about this era was no exception. Gilman Bigelow Howe, though probably doubtful as to the Warren genealogy's veracity, quoted extensively from it, giving Mary Warren's lineage back to the sixth century—surely an impossiblity to prove by document. Some years later in 1910, the NEHG Register published an excellent article quoting from actual parish and probate records. The article, while not exactly denying any pretensions to royalty for the Warren family, did point out that one cannot prove Warren ancestry in England more than one hundred years preceding John and Margaret Warren's arrival in America. The provable generations immediately preceding John Warren's removal from England to America in no way correspond to the three generations "proved" as listed in the Appendix of Howe's Genealogy of the Bigelow Family of America. Sir William de Baguley, F Baguley Hall, John and Margaret Warren are clearly listed on ship's lists on their arrival in the New World. While undoubtedly their four surviving children came with them, the children are not mentioned as passengers. They came from Nayland, Suffolk, England, where seven baptisms and three burials indicate the size of their family. No marriage record exists for John and Margaret. John Warren, son of John and Mary (Scarlet) Warren, was baptised 1 Aug 1585 Nayland, Suffolk county, England. He married Margaret , who died in Watertown, MA 6 Nov 1662. John Warren died at Watertown 13 Dec 1667. They came to New England in 1630. All their children were born Nayland, Suffolk county, England: i Mary, baptised 23 June 1619; buried 1622. ii Elizabeth, baptised 25 June 1619; buried 1622. iii Sarah, baptised 20 Apr 1620; buried 7 Sep 1621. iv John, baptised 12 May 1622; died Watertown, MA 24 Jan 1703; married 11 Jly 1667 Michal (Jennison) Blois. v Mary, baptised 12 Sep 1624; died 19 Oct 1691 Watertown; married 30 Oct 1642 John Bigelow. vi Daniel, baptised 25 Feb 1626/7; died after 1698; married 10 Dec 1650 Mary Baron. vii Elizabeth, baptised 21 Jly 1629; married circa 1654 James Knapp. It is Bigelow Society's recommendation that those who are looking for their English ancestry should read not only the NEHG Register of Oct 1910 but also the following sources on the architecture and history of Baguley Hall in Cheshire, England: Ormerod, History of the County of Palatine and City of Chester, 2nd ed. Taylor, Old Halls in Lancashire and Cheshire, 1884. Balshaw, Strangers' Guide to Altrincham. Transactions of the Lancashire and Cheshire Antiquarian Society, 1886. The architecture and history of Baguley and Ollerton Halls have also been treated in Forge: The Bigelow Society Quarterly, vol 5, pp. 3-8; vol 7, pp. 3-12, and vol 12, pp 5-8. John Biglo, Immigrant

1 The immigrant ancestor of nearly all persons in North America bearing the surname Bigelow in any of its several variants, is John Biglo of Watertown, Middlesex county, Massachusetts. He lived from 1617 to 1703. Many of his descendants have been recorded in a genealogy entitled Genealogy of the Bigelow Family of America, written by Gilman Bigelow Howe, printed 1890. The book was published by Charles Hamilton of Boston, and is no longer available except by photo-copy reprint. Re-bound used copies occasionally come into the used-book market with the simple title Bigelow Genealogy. In this book Howe states that he was unable to obtain any satisfactory account of the progenitor of John Biglo, and quotes conflicting traditions stating that the surname is of various national origins. He also quotes the late genealogist H.G. Somerby, who felt that John Biglo came from Wrentham, Suffolk, England, and was son of Randall and Jane Beageley, who had then- youngest son, John, baptised 16 Feb 1617. Also, from the probate records of Wrentham, Somerby quotes the will of Francis Baguley, blacksmith, of Wrentham, who in a will dated 20 Oct 1656, granted five pounds "to his brother John Baguley, now living in New England, if he comes for it within two years." He offered no proof that Francis was son of Randall Baguley. The rector of Wrentham parish in 1617 was the Rev. John Phillips, who later emigrated to Dedham, Massachusetts. During his years in Dedham, Phillips once stated that the blacksmith John Biglo of Watertown, Massachusetts was the same infant whom he had baptised in 1617 as the son of Randall Beageley, and that he (Phillips) had "known John Biglo from earliest youth upward." 1 Further, in a civil case in Watertown during his lifetime, John Biglo took the witness stand and identified himself as "John Biglo, formerly of Wrentham, England." From these facts we state the identity and parentage of John Biglo, and through parish and probate records in England, can prove three generations of his English ancestry. John Biglo seems to have arrived in Watertown, MA circa 1632. He probably came with an older relative, Elizabeth Bigelow, second wife of Deacon Richard Butler, who after a short stay in Massachusetts, followed the Rev. Thomas Hooker to Connecticut. It is assumed that Elizabeth was an older sister or first cousin . No ship's-records exist showing the date of their arrival. John Biglo took part in the Pequot War of 1636, serving from Watertown. The next public mention we find o f him is his marriage in Watertown on 30 Oct 1642-the first marriage recorded in Watertown-before Mr. Nowell, to Mary Warren, daughter of John and Margaret Warren. Mary Warren was baptised 12 Sep 1624 at Nayland, Suffolk, England. The book Reminiscences of the History of MarlboroughMA 1910, by Ella Bigelow, contains a fictional bu t colorful description of how John and Mary might have dressed for their wedding. To quote from Howe's book, "from the list of those who took the oath of fidelity at Watertown 1652, we find that John Biggalough was one of the number, and he became a freeman 18 Apr 1690 which we find from the roll of freemen written as John Bigolo; under the same date we find tha t Samuel Begaloo was made a freeman, and by another list, date 16 May 1690, we find Samuel Biggilo and John Warren jr. were made freemen. One the return of soldiers who were in the service of 25 Nov to 3 Dec 1675 [King Phillip's War] we find the names of John Bigulah sr, Michael Flegg, and Isaac Leonard, the last being wounded. Thus we find the name variously spelled by different officials, but when we find the name written by any member of the family, in those early days it is written Biglo, Bigelo, or Bigelow." John Biglo appears by various accounts to have been a blacksmith, and again from town records we quote: "Agreed with John Biglo that for ten trees the towne allowed him for the setting up of a shop for a Smithes forge, that he shall either go on with his promise of setting up his trade, which is the trade of a Smith, within one twelfmonth after the date hereof or else to pay unto the towne ten shillings for these ten trees he acknowledged to have off the towne." Dated 4 Mar 1651. John Biglo was chosen a surveyor of highways in 1652 and 1660, a constable [tax-collector] in 1663, and one of the selectmen or town council, in 1665, 1670, and 1671. His homesite consisted of six acres and was bounded north by Richard Ambler and William Parker, east by Thomas Straight, south by the highway, and on the west by Miles Ives. After the death of his wife Mary on 19 Oct 1691, he married (2) on 2 Oct 1694, Sarah Bemis, daughter of Joseph Bemis. She outlived him. He died on 14 Jly 1703, at the age of 86 years, as recorded in town records. His will was dated 4 Jan 1703 and was proved 23 Jly 1703. The will of John Biglo in its entirety, is as follows:

The inventory of John Biglo's estate amounted to £627-12-00. This was a middle-class fortune. Among the expenses charged for the funeral were several pairs of black gloves, twenty gallons of wine, bottles for the wine, allspice and sugar, and two men and horses to carry the wine and other articles to the funeral, also "a man and horse to notify Isaac Larned and wife at Sherburne to attend the funeral, and a man and horse to notify John Stearns at Billerica to attend the funeral." An additional note comes from the Knight family genealogy, in which Joseph Knight and his wife Hannah in 1649 sold 'a mansion and land' to John Biglo. A map of early Watertown is shown in Robinson and Wheeler's book, Great Little Watertown; the land owned by John Biglo appears at the extreme left of the map, as does the adjoining parcel purchased from Joseph Knight. John Biglo owned several pieces of property, and in 1686 executed a gift-in-deed, conveying to Samuel Biglow and wife, 16 acres and the house thereon "already occupied by my son Samuel." The children of John and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, all born in Watertown, Middlesex county, MA, are as follows:

10 Second Generation

11 John2 Bigelow jr, oldest child of John1 and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, was bora 27 Oct 1643 in Watertown, Middlesex county, MA. He early emigrated to Hartford, CT. [At this point it is necessary to explain that he probably followed Deacon Richard Butler who first settled in Cambridge, MA, but became a follower of Rev. Thomas Hooker, and emigrated with him to Connecticut; Butler was a deacon of the First Church at Hartford. His children are included at this point, as John Bigelow jr was intimately associated with Butler's descendants. By unknown first wife : 1. Mary, b 1653; married Samuel Wright, res Wethersfield, CT. 2. Thomas, b 1637; married Sarah Stone. 3. Samuel, b 1639; married Elizabeth Olmsted; res Wethersfield, CT; parents of Jonathan Butler. 4. Daniel, b ; married Mabel Olmsted; res Hartford. 8. Hannah, b ; married John Green of Fairfield, CT. Richard Butler died 6 Aug 1684, and Elizabeth Bigelow his wife 11 Sep 1691.] John Bigelow jr married (1) 27 May 1675 at Concord, Sarah Wheate. We have no record of her, and presume that she died childless. John jr then married (2) at unknown date, Rebecca Olmsted, daughter of Nicholas Olmsted and Sarah Loomis. She was sister to the three Olmsteds listed above, and therefore aunt to Jonathan Butler, to whom John Bigelow jr deeded his property, or a portion thereof. A John Bigelow jr purchased land in Hartford 3 May 1669, and on it built a house: "Was lot of Anne Westby, and bounded West on the highway, East and partly south on Benjamin Huber and Peck, on the North by Thomas Watt's land." This was situated near the present grounds of Trinity College in Cooper Lane. In 1707 John deeded a portion of his property to Jonathan Butler, nephew of his wife Rebecca, and he died circa 1721, as letters of administration were granted 5 Dec 1721 to Rebecca, and inventory taken 27 Dec 1721, amounting to £54-07-01. This settlement was not satisfactory to all, and Joseph Bigelow, nephew to John, appeared before the court and remonstrated against Jonathan Butler receiving the property, but without avail, and the property remained in the hands of the Butler family until the late 1800's. John Bigelow jr left no known issue.

12 Jonathan2 Bigelow, second son and second child of John1 and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, was bora 11 Dec 1646 in Watertown, Middlesex county, MA. As a young man he went to Hartford, CT, where he married (1) in 1671 Rebecca Shepard, daughter of John and Rebecca (Greenhill) Shepard, who was born in Hartford in 1650. She died before 1686, when Jonathan married (2) Mary Olcott, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Stocking) Olcott. Mary was probably mother of Jonathan's five youngest children. She died 7 Mar 1697. He then married (3) Mary (Benton) Cole, widow of Nathaniel Cole, and a daughter of Andrew and Hannah (Stocking) Benton. Jonathan died 9 Jan 1711, and his widow then married on 19 Mar 1713 Deacon John Shepard, brother of Jonathan's first wife. She died 27 Dec 1752, allegedly aged 98 years, 7 months, 26 days. Jonathan's land was recorded as early as 1674, and is described as bounded west on the road leading to Wethersfield. His children Jonathan jr, Rebecca, Mary, Sarah, John, and Violet, children of his first wif e Rebecca, are mentioned in a controversy over settlement of their grandfather John Shepard's estate in 1685. Jonathan's will appointed Mary his wife and son Joseph as executors, and mentions all surviving children, with Thomas Olcott appointed as guardian of the two youngest, who were 15 and 18 years of age. In 1711 the guardianship was changed, with Samuel Benton appointed guardian of Daniel, and Deacon John Shepard guardian of Samuel. Hartford records are not complete,

11 but the following are children of Jonathan Bigelow, and all were born at Hartford, Hartford county, CT:

121t Jonathan, b 22 Mar 1673; d 29 Jly 1749 Hartford; m 14 Dec 1699 Mabel Edwards; res Hartford. 8 children.

12 14 Daniel2 Bigelow, fourth child and third son of John1 and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, was born in Watertown, Middlesex county, MA 1 Dec 1650. He married, circa 1688, Abiel Pratt, daughter of Thomas and Susanna (Gleason) Pratt. He settled in Framington, MA as early as 1686, and was a tailor by trade. They lived in the east end of what was then Gleason's Pond. Daniel Bigelow is said to have died circa 1715 in Framingham, and his wife outlived him. Births of their children are found in the vital records of Sherborn, of which Framingham was then a part:

15 Samuel2 Bigelow, fifth child and fourth son of John1 and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, was bora 28 Oct 1653 in Watertown, Middlesex county, MA. On 3 Jun 1674 he married Mary Flagg, b 14 Jan 1658 in Watertown, daughter of Thomas and Mary Flagg. Bond's Genealogies and History of Watertown states that Samuel was a carpenter and innkeeper; Howe's Bigelow genealogy states Samuel was "an important man in Watertown," an innholder from 1702 to 1716, and represented the General Court from 1708 to 1710. Thumbing through town records from 1680 to 1727, we find Samuel's name appearing frequently. Following are a few extracts which show Samuel's role in village politics, taken verbatim, including the orginal spelling: 27 Sep 1687. Samuel Bigaloo chosen survayor. 7 Nov 1692. Samuell begelo chosen Cunstabel [tax collector]. 21 Dec 1696. Samuel Bigelow appointed to the committee to hire or procure housing for the Rev. Samuel Angier, and to take effectual care of the moving of Mr. Angier and family to Watertown. 1 Feb 1697. Samuel Begelo elected selectman [town councilman]. 20 Jan 1697. Samuel Begelo issued his accounts, as he was constable, by his receipts and payments before the selectman. 7 Mar 1701. Samuel Bigelow given approval to keep a publick house. 7 May 1708. Mr. Samuell Bigelow chosen representative for the year ensuing. [The title "Mr." implies that his social rank is above that of an ordinary "goodman," perhaps a sign of respect for Samuel's new office, and is henceforth used in referring to him.] 15 Feb 1709. Mr. Sam 11 Biglo w on committee to carry on the work of building a schoolhouse. 10 May 1709. Mr. Samuel Bigelow chosen representive. - 6 Mar 1710. Mr. Samuel biglo chosen representative; his nephew Joshua jr., chosen hayward. 5 Jan 1711. Samuel Biglo one of several signing an agreement that Nathaniel green was to be a town charge [i.e., receive welfare assistance]. 2 Mar 1713. Samuel Biglow appointed tithing-man. 1 Mar 1714. Mr. Samuel Biglow chosen selectman. 8 Apr 1714. Sam! Biglo appointed to committee to take care that Nicholas Wyeth and wife be provided with work and kept at it according to their ability. 18 Jly 1714. Town treasurer to pay Samuel Biglo nine shillings for corn provided Nicholas Wyeth and wife. 10 Aug 1714. Mr. Samuel Biglo to be paid 18 shilling from tow n treasury. 15 Feb 1715. Mr. Samuel Biglo chosen selectman. 9 Sep 1715. Mr. Samuel Biglo and Samuell Steams to prepare answers to the petition of the Eastern Congregation, which wishes to form a separate town. 20 Mar 1716. Samuel Biglo to bargain with John Cutting to entertain [i.e., board] Nicholas Wyeth & wife, and provide them house room, with four cords of firewood and reasonable rate for the coming year. 20 Feb 1716. Mr. Samuell Biglo's account for Joseph Cutler's funeral: coffin, 6 shillings; for drink, 8 shillings; ' . -. • i • - grave-digging, 6 shillings. Ordered paid by Zachariah Cutting. 27 Nov 1716. Mr. Samuell Biglo to be paid 4 shillings for timber to make over the bridge by Widow Flagg's. 25 Dec 1716. Mr. Samuell Biglow to provide a shirt for James Holland in his needy condition, at the town's .. . i'J. 7 expense. [Note that our Puritan forefatheis did not observe Christmas, and that the town council met as usual on Dec. 25.] There were no further entries in Watertown records in which Samuel Bigelow's name appeared. His will was drawn up in 1720, so we assume that declining health and approaching old age caused his retirement from public life. Samuel's will, dated 30 Sep 1720, mentions all four sons, daughters Mercy Garfield, Abigail Cutler, and Deliverance Stearns; sons-in-law Thomas Reed, Josiah Howe, and Daniel Warren; grandchildren David Bruce, Nathaniel Read, Isaac Read, Thomas Read, Catherine Read, Phinehas Howe, Abraham Howe, Rachel Howe, Samuel Warren, Daniel Warren, and Hannah Warren The three daughters were given £17 each. Howe, in the Bigelow genealogy, does not give Samuel's death date, stating only that his will was proved 21 Feb 1721. However, Waltham town records clearly give Samuel's death as 1 Feb 1722, and since Samuel's son Thomas lived in Waltham from 1720 onward, we assume that Samuel and wife spent their last days in Thomas' . Mary's death is recorded in both Watertown and Waltham records as 7 Sep 1720. Their headstones were still visible in Waltham in the 1930's. As early as 1686 John and Mary (Warren) Bigelow executed a gift-in-deed of 16 acres, plus "the house in which he now lives" to Samuel and wife Mary. Samuel and Mary (Flagg) Bigelow had ten children, all born in Watertown, Middlesex co, MA:

Both Bigelow and Cutler genealogies state that Abigail was mother of Jonathan's three oldest children, bapt in Lexington, MA, but that she may have d before 1726, and that Jonathan remarried. He had 6 children in all.

Hannah, no birthdate; d at Westborough ca 1717; m 1711 second cousin Daniel Warren jr, who m (2) ca 1717 Mehitable Garfield. Hannah had 3 children.

Deliverance, b 22 Sep 1695; d unknown date at Worcester, MA; m 10 Aug 1715 John Steams; res Worcester. Howe's Bigelow genealogy alleges that she left many descendants, but the writer cannot identify more than 5 of her children with certainty.

14 16 Joshua2 Bigelow, sixth child and fifth son of John1 and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, was born 5 Nov 1655, in Watertown, Middlesex county, MA. Just before reaching his majority, on 20 Oct 1676, he married Elizabeth Flagg, daughter of Thomas and Mary (maiden name unknown) Flagg. She was born in Watertown 22 Mar 1657, according to Howe's Bigelow genealogy, but the Flagg genealogy gives this as 1655. She died in Watertown 9 Aug 1729. Joshua served in the colonial agreement known as King Phillip's War, as a member of Capt. Ting's company. He was wounded, and as a result was given a grant of land in Narragansett No. 2, which we now know as Westminster, MA. However, Joshua continued to reside in Watertown until his last few years, the grant passing to his son Eleazer. See also Bodge's volume on the colonial wars of 1675. Joshua was appointed executor of his father's will, along with his brother-in-law Isaac Larned, in return for which he received a larger share of his father's estate than did his brothers and sisters. He appears to have been well-known in his lifetime. Howe's Bigelow Family of America says that "in his 87 th year, being anxious to reside on the land he had earned at the peril of his life," Joshua removed to Westminster with his son Eleazer, and resided there until his death on 1 Feb 1745, having outlived all his brothers and sisters except Abigail (Bigelow) Harrington. Joshua and Elizabeth (Flagg) Bigelow had twelve children, all born in Watertown:

Joshua, b 25 Nov 1677; d 9 May 1728 Weston, MA; m 17 Oct 1701 Hannah Fiske; res Weston. 9 children.

Jonathan, b 22 Mar 1679; d after 1745 (his will is dated Jan 1746) at Weston, MA; m (1) 11 Jun 1702 Elizabeth Bemis, who died 1734, and (2) 29 Jan 1742 Mary Rice; res Weston. 5 children.

Jabez. There are no actual records of this son. Family tradition says he moved to Bristol, England, and became a merchant, but genealogists have never found any trace of him in England.

Elizabeth, b 3 Aug 1687; no death date; m 28 Feb 1724 Jonathan Harrington. 1 daughter.

Mercy. Bond's Genealogies and History cf Watertown places a daughter of this name in Joshua's family, but it is now generally agreed that there was no such daughter, and that Bond was confused by Samuel Bigelow's daughter Mercy, whose birth was recorded as "Martha."

David, b 30 Apr 1694; said to have died in Spain, but there is no proof.

Joseph, b 29 Dec 1695; d 6 Jan 1765 Weston, MA; m (1) ca 1720 Sarah , d 18 Feb 1755 "in her fillies;" and (2) 10 Jly 1755 Thankful Robinson, who outlived him to many (2) 1766 Ezra Graves, and (3) 1769 Isaac Rice, both of Sudbury. Joseph res Weston, and had 3 children born 1720's.

Ebenezer, b 4 Sep 1698; m 29 May 1720 Hannah Browne. They moved to Weston, then Worcester, next Newton, then Waltham. Ebenezer was a ship's carpenter, and is said to have died in Cuba. Church records show 12 children, several of whom have proved untraceable.

19 James2 Bigelow, ninth child and sixth son of John1 and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, was born circa 1660 (the only child of this couple whose birth was not recorded) at Watertown, Middlesex county, MA. Because no birth record can be found, doubt has sometimes been cast as to James' parentage; his first marriage record, however, identifies him clearly as a son of John and Mary Bigelow. He is mentioned once or twice in Watertown town records. Samuel Sewall's diary, in the entry for 3 Nov 1685, says that James Bigelow was fined for insulting the lieutenant-governor. James was married (1) 25 Mar 1687 at Sherburne to Patience Brown, daughter of Jonathan and Mary (Shattuck) Brown. She died at unknown date, leaving one son. James married (2) 3 Jly 1693 Elizabeth Child, bora 24 Jly 1670, daughter of John and Mary (Warren) Child. She died in Watertown 20 Apr 1707, and James married (3) 15 Jun 1708 Joanna Erickson of Boston. James died in Weston, MA 20 Jan 1728, and his widow Joanna married (2) 8 Jan 1729 Adam Smith of Boston. James lived in the part of Watertown set off in 1713 as Weston. Children of James Bigelow were all recorded in Watertown as follows:

191+ James, bapt 6 May 1688; d Aug 1718 Casco Bay, MA; m 1716 Mercy , who after James' death, m (2) 28 Jan 1721 John Andros of Killingly, CT. James jr is mentioned in his grandfather Jonathan Brown's will as being Patience's only child; also mentioned in his paternal grandfather Bigelow's will, which bequeathed him a sum of money "if he shall live until he comes of age." James jr left one daughter, Patience, b 25 Jun 1717 Weston, and m 24 Jan 1733 at Killingly to Samuel Lawrence. This girl is the last Bigelow of James Bigelow's line.

192t Patience, b 30 Sep 1693; d 23 Jan 1773 Groton, MA; m 20 Nov 1720 Samuel Wood; res Groton, MA. 8 children.

193 John, d 15 Nov 1694. Howe's Bigelow genealogy places this child second in order, and a child of James' first wife Patience. Town records, however, specify him as "child of James and Elizabeth," so that we are inclined to place the birth but a short time, perhaps a matter of days or weeks, before his death.

194 Abraham, b 12 Nov 1699; d 1720 Cambridge, MA; unm.

1 1 1A Martha'4 Bigelow, tenth child and fourth daughter of John1 and Mary (Warren) Bigelow, was bora 1 Apr 1662 at Watertown, Middlesex co, MA. Howe's Bigelow genealogy says she married twice, but gives the name of only her second husband, Obadiah Wood of East Hartford, CT. In his will, John Bigelow in 1703 left a sum of money for children of Martha, wife of Obadiah Wood, specifying it be divided among children "lawfully begotten of her own body." This implies two things: (1) that Martha was deceased and that her children were to inherit Martha's share, and (2) that Martha had step-children, from one of her two marriages. Concerning Obadiah Wood, Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of New England states that an Obadiah Wood of Ipswich was married (1) to Margaret , who died in childbirth 1667, and (2) to Hazabalponah , who was the mother of several children, including an Obadiah jr, bora circa 1668. Savage felt this Obadiah jr was the same as Obadiah Wood of Hartford; he had fought in King Phillip's War, and was generously paid in land for his efforts. Savage says Obadiah jr married Martha and had 3 children baptised in Hartford (he omits a fourth), and "probably many others. Barbour's Families of Early Hartford states that Obadiah Wood of Hartford was married to Martha King [which may have been Martha Bigelow's name at marriage; no proof is intended, however] and that he had the following family:

Margaret, bapt 6 Nov 1687 First Church, died young.

Abigail, bapt 23 Apr 1699 First Church.

Margaret, bapt 8 Jly 1705 First Church.

Obadiah, bapt 8 Sep 1706 First Church; m Mehitable .

17 John.

Maiy.

Martha, m John Shaw.

Samuel.

Many questions arise from the above list If the last four were Martha Bigelow's children, surely they were (in view of her age) born between 1687 and 1706. If born after 1706, surely then not children of Martha Bigelow. Or does John Bigelow imply that Martha's first husband had children from a prior marriage? In view of Obadiah's birth circa 1668, he would surely not have had a wife prior to Martha Bigelow. Also, John Bigelow's will was drawn up in 17Q2, so when he says children, the plural word implies more offspring than the Abigail above. Lastly, what proof have we that Barbour is correct in calling the wife Martha King?

Bigelows from the 1790 cnesus and/or reconstructed tax-rolls are found on the following pages. Spelling of the surname, as in the text of this book, has been standardized, i.e. spelled in the manner Bigelow. regardless of how it appears on the census. Names are arranged first by state, then alphabetically by name of Bigelow. The columns shown indicate:

head of family county town number in family identification according to the numerical system of this volume

For those who have not worked with the 1790 census, the five digits of the "number of family" column represent: 1. males age 16 and over, including head-of-household 2. males under age 16 3. females, including head-of-household 4. all other free persons 5. slaves

It will be observed that in a few cases that the Bigelow head-of-household is still unidentified, or that identity is questionable. Positive identification would be welcome to the Bigelow Society.

No Bigelows were found in census or tax rolls for Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Rhode Island, or other ennumerated areas, though it is believed that Cyprian-12954 and/or wife Elizabeth were in Charleston county, South Carolina by 1790. Concerning Bigelows of the 1790 census who are not identified in this volume, the following information may help to establish their lineage:

377 Appendix B

The American Revolution involved the greater portion of adult male Bigelows between ages 16 and 65 who were living in the period 1776-81. Wherever possible in this volume, actual military records have been quoted to identify the Bigelows who served in the colonial cause, and the military unit in which the ancestor served. Every one of the original colonies has produced publications listing military units of the Revolution and the men who served in them. These have been used and quoted throughout the preceding volume. Since the majority of the Bigelow family was living in Massachusetts, the series Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution is the source most frequently quoted throughout Volume 2 of this multi-volume work contains many pages on Bigelow military service. However, in some cases, it was impossible to identify with total accuracy the Bigelow who served in a particular unit or engagement. The very nature of the war, short enlistments interspersed with leaves, made continuous military service infrequent, and a man might serve during a half-dozen or more periods of time in various companies of militia. In the military records, he might or might not be identified by home town, age, or physical description. Those entries in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution which remain unidentified to the editor's satisfaction are listed herewith, and correspondence concerning the soldier and his identity invited.
