  • Religious Faith and Rationalism in Terry Pratchett’S Small Gods
Stella Puhakka RELIGIOUS FAITH AND RATIONALISM IN TERRY PRATCHETT’S SMALL GODS Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences Bachelor’s Thesis November 2019 ABSTRACT Stella Puhakka: Religious Faith and Rationalism in Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods Bachelor’s Thesis Tampere University Degree Programme in English Language, Literature and Translation November 2019 This thesis examines the treatment of institutional religion, religious faith and believers in Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods arguing that the novel calls for transparency and fairness in religious institutions and critical thinking, understanding and tolerance from those with a belief system. The novel highlights these issues through the relationship between its main character, Brutha, and his god, Om, as they explore the world beyond the theocratic nation of Omnia. Their interactions with one another and the world at large are analysed with the help of fantasy and satire as well as real world equivalents for the ideas, ideologies and religions presented. Small Gods uses both religious and political satire in its efforts to criticise religion. In its political satire, the novel highlights the dangers of the intertwining of religion, state, and law enforcement, and questions religious expansion and censorship for power’s sake. Its religious satire, on the other hand, is more interested in religious figures, ideas and texts as it ridicules extremism within such institutions. These two types of satire are irrevocably linked to one another within the novel as those seeking political power do so through religious means. They are also used to highlight the individuals inside these outwardly dangerous institutions and show the conditions in which they practice their faith.

  • Ankh-Morpork: the City As Protagonist
Ankh-Morpork: The City as Protagonist Anikó Sóhar Université Catholique Pázmány Péter Abstract: In science fiction and fantasy, sometimes the city (whether it is real or imaginary) plays the leading role, for example New York in Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin, or London in Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Often, as in the case of Newford in several novels and short stories by Charles de Lint, a made-up city with its fictional topography and maps corresponds to and accentuates the social relations as well as the emotions embedded in the narration; the geography can indeed be emotional as it was so aptly put by Sir Terry Pratchett when he appointed Rincewind (one of his regularly popping-up characters) “Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography of Unseen University” (among other jobs). Sir Terry also dreamt up a very significant city called Ankh-Morpork in his Discworld series (which might have been based on Budapest) which offers a perfect topic for discussion. Ankh-Morpork, which was a simple although very funny parody of a typical city in fantasy fiction at the beginning, gradually becomes a setting for emancipation, liberation and disenthralment from various bonds, and provides ample examples of references to British and internationalised culture. The city itself does not play a leading role in any of the novels, but when the whole series is taken into consideration, its significance is immediately apparent, the whole series forms a sort of bildungsroman which describes the maturation process of Ankh-Morpork. The whole sensational landscape created for our amusement as well as intellectual and moral benefit could be accurately mapped in terms of literary-cum-urban-studies, geopoetics, focusing on several aspects of social criticism.

Origins and Meaning of Some of the Recurrent Characters in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld ABSTRACT Nominative symbolism in fantasy is a tool to attribute certain traits to literary characters and thus to convey meaning which enriches the readers’ comprehension of the fictitious personality. Proper names in the English naming tradition are not generally seen as means of alluding to the character of a person, yet they have sometimes been chosen purposefully by writers so as to reveal the idea that a symbolic name tries to convey. The paper therefore aims at investigating the origin and author’s intended meaning behind the names of some recurrent literary characters in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series from the viewpoint of their structure and the allusions they evoke in the reader’s imagination. The analysis includes five names presenting three different structures: neologisms based on syntactic composition, imitations of borrowed structures that are foreign to the English model of naming, and typical English naming models where name symbolism is due to the lexical choice of the components in the name. Keywords: onomastics, literary onomastics, proper names, allusiveness, literary names, charactonyms Kaj se skriva za imenom? In my MA thesis, I examine closely the allusive qualities of the white knowledge present in Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series: The Wee Free Men (2003), A Hat Full of Sky (2004), Wintersmith (2006), I Shall Wear Midnight (2010) and The Shepherd’s Crown (2015).

Re-read on Xmas! Little ' YES. What the hell. Oh, all right. The 20th Discworld novel is a festive feast of darkness and Death but with jolly robins and tinsel too. Suddenly Discworld's entire myth system is unraveling at an alarming rate. The Gaiters were having a dinner party. Quite ironic given how much Susan says she only wants to be 'normal'. P has said the city probably leans toward the early 19th century, he writes it a bit older than that and so this felt, as one person said, more like a Harry Potter than the Discworld. The guy from Hustle is great as Teatime and the girl from Downton Abbey perfect as Susan Death, and they both bring the two central characters to life in such a way that the book feels very flat in comparison but as a standalone Discworld novel on the nature of belief it's almost as good as Small Gods with the s I have seen the TV adaptation so many times, it's a Christmas tradition around here, that it is hard to separate my affection for the show with my affection for the writing of Pratchett. The midwinter holiday on Discworld is Hogswatch rather than Christmas, and the Hogfather is the Discworld's counterpart of Santa Claus.

Moreover, after the likes of Moving Pictures and Witches Abroad, which consisted mainly of tightly and loosely stitched (respectively) vignettes and homages and outright transplants of other work, Small Gods refreshingly returns to complete, coherent original narrative, while still giving breadth and diversity enough to support the plurality of independent subplots Pratchett appears to increasingly prefer. Slightly distracting, although I would not go so far as to say detracting from the book overall, is Pratchetts lingering tendency to frame some scenes in ways almost anticipating a cinematic production over a literary work- e.g.

  • Pratchett's Vivid Characters and Wonderfully Tongue-In-Cheek Dialogue Are Right at Home in This Vibrant and Imaginative Interpretation"
"PRATCHETT'S VIVID CHARACTERS AND WONDERFULLY TONGUE-IN-CHEEK DIALOGUE ARE RIGHT AT HOME IN THIS VIBRANT AND IMAGINATIVE INTERPRETATION" Words: Henry Rodriguez - TREv Photo: Michael Errey Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods is a tale bursting at the shell with absurdity, unexpected laughs, and lighthearted satire. It centres on the once-great god Om, who finds herself stuck in the body of a tortoise due to a shortage in belief – the lifeblood of the gods. In fact, Om has only one true believer left: Brutha. It is Brutha’s journey that the tale really chronicles, as he travels to far off lands, struggles with the meaning of his own belief, finds himself in the middle of multiple warring factions and spends a lot of time conversing with a very sardonic tortoise. The novel is definitely one of Pratchett’s more difficult to translate onto stage; there is a lot of tortoise and a large part of both the story and humour is provided by narration. Despite this director/producer/actor Pamela Munt has managed to condense the story into a play for the Unseen Theatre Company that hits all the plot points and doesn’t lose any of the comedy. My companion for the night, who was not familiar with the novel, found the initial prologue a bit confusing. Reliance on narration by the added character Footnote was at times heavy handed and occasionally broke the pace of the action. Nonetheless, newcomers to Pratchett's Discworld, after some initial reorientation, should have no trouble falling into the tale of a small tortoise and her apostle Brutha (charmingly played by Timothy Tedmanson).

  • The Turtle Moves a Literary Study of Terry Pratchett's Omnianism
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by University of Oulu Repository - Jultika The Turtle Moves A literary study of Terry Pratchett’s Omnianism Heikki Saastamoinen Bachelor’s thesis English Philology Faculty of humanities University of Oulu Spring 2019 Abstract This thesis is a close reading of Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods in the framework of postmodern literary theory. Small Gods is a fantasy novel, which has the history of a made-up religion called Omnianism as its central narrative. The motivation for this thesis came from the feeling that Pratchett’s parodical approach could be a front to a deeper message, which could be uncovered in a close reading. In addition to searching for the postmodern themes in Small Gods I tried to look for the reasons for these themes surfacing in the novel. My close reading found numerous postmodern themes throughout the novel, and the parody Pratchett makes of Christianity was the most prominent postmodern theme present. Another theme that appeared a lot in the novel was the idea that while the Omnianism is a parody, it also holds a mirror to Christianity, highlighting the flaws that can be found in both religions. I found out that the parody and celebration of fragmentation of faith and authority of ages past seem to be rooted in Pratchett’s apparent atheism. The thesis suggests that Pratchett’s other fictional religious institutions could be worth studying, as well as his political parody, using this thesis as a frame of reference. • Small Gods: a Discworld Novel
Small Gods: A Discworld Novel Author: Terry Pratchett Genre: Literature Publisher: London: Corgi, 1992 ISBN: 0-552-1890-8 RRP: £5.99 (+£2.80 p&p) Ever wondered what it would be like to live on a planet the shape of a coin, sitting on the back of four elephants who were themselves perched on the back of a giant ‘space turtle’? The place I refer to is known as the Discworld, an environment about which beloved author and Knight of the Realm (Sir) Terry Pratcehtt has written dozens of books over the last few decades. Each story, with comedy being used as the weapon of choice to captivate the reader(s), concentrates on one individual character (or small group) who live on Discworld, with other familiar faces from other Discworld stories popping up for a cameo or two. There are the Rinsewind books, about the worst wizard ever to go to Unseen University, the Guards books about Commander Vimes (who just wants a quite life) and the group of trolls, dwarfes, vampires and various other monsters and people who make up the body charged with policing Discwoold’s capital: Ankh-Morpork. My favourite sets of books, though, are the ones about Death, the grim reaper who rides on his white horse with his scythe helping people depart this world for the next, though he manages to go on many adventures along the way. Small Gods is about a very clever tortoise, and a very stupid monk. While on one level it is a satire, taking a swipe at all those who claim to act in the name of a maker in whom they profess to believe (while actually serving their own ends), at a basic, brain-in- neutral-gear kind of level, it’s just pure comedy and good writing.
