We trust that you will find the articles in this issue to be informative and edifying. Rev. Angus Stewart continues his in-depth study of Calvin’s con- ception of the covenant in his series entitled “John Calvin’s Integrated Covenant Theology.” Rev. Stewart’s focus in this installment is on the blessings of the covenant, as delineated by Calvin. Rev. Stewart anticipates contributing two more articles before bringing his very worthwhile series to a close. Dispensationalism is a real and present threat in our day. This heresy is widely promoted, and many—including many church leaders—are ill-equipped to respond to this false teaching. Although dispensationalism is primarily an aberrant eschatological view, there is an array of significant errors that are associated with the movement. Behind all its other errors, however, is dispensationalism’s flawed hermeneutic. It is this fundamental flaw in dispensational theology that Rev. James Laning exposes in the first of two articles from his pen entitled, “The Hermeneutics of Dispensationalism.” In April of this year, the Rev. Eugene Case was guest lecturer at the Protestant Reformed Theological Seminary. Rev. Case presented three very informative lectures on the history of Southern Presbyterian- ism in the United States. -
Calvin and the Early Reformers on the Problem of Petitionary Prayer

CALVIN AND THE EARLY REFORMERS ON THE PROBLEM OF PETITIONARY PRAYER CHRISTOPHER WOZNICKI* Abstract: Filling a glaring gap in Reformation studies addressing the problems of petitionary prayer, this essay turns to the work of John Calvin and his fellow reformers in order to fill that gap. I argue that despite rejecting a two-way contingency account of prayer, Calvin and most of his contemporaries make a case for prayer being a worthwhile and effective spiritual practice by appealing to something other than prayer’s role in giving God reasons to act. These Reformers argued against the redundancy of prayer by appealing to the change that happens in the praying agent. The argument of this essay is carried out with special reference to contemporary analytic theology accounts of petitionary prayer. Key words: analytic theology, Heinrich Bullinger, John Calvin, Martin Bucer, Martin Lu- ther, petitionary prayer, prayer, Reformation “Do we receive an answer when we pray?” This question stands at the be- ginning of Karl Barth’s treatment of John Calvin’s theology of prayer. Barth goes on to conclude that, according to Calvin, God indeed does answer prayer. In fact, “God does not act in the same way whether we pray or not. Prayer exerts an influ- ence upon God’s action.”1 But Barth’s view of Calvin’s theology of petitionary prayer could not be further from recent views put forth by both friends and foes of Calvin. One “friend” argues that given God’s nature and purposes, petitionary prayer may be redundant for Calvin.2 One “foe,” on the other hand, claims that the theological system implied by Calvinism makes prayer logically unnecessary and for all intents and purposes a waste of time. -

“Subtle Sacramentarian” or Son? John Calvin’s Relationship to Martin Luther R. Scott Clark R. Scott Clark is Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Westminster Seminary California. He earned his DPhil from Oxford University. He is author of Caspar Olevian and the Substance of the Covenant (Reformation Heritage Books, 2008) and Recovering the Reformed Confession (P&R, 2008). Dr. Clark is a minister in the United Reformed Churches in North America, a husband, and father of two. In October of 1545, Heinrich von Wolfenbüttel (1489–1568), the Romanist Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneberg-Wolfenbüttel, in the process of attempting to recover lands taken from him by the Protestant Schmalkald League (in 1542), was taken captive along with his sons. The Lutheran territories of Hesse and Saxony in were placed in great danger of invasion by Romanist forces.1 In response, the Reformed pastor-theologian John Calvin (1509–64) was so disturbed by this threat to his Lutheran brothers that he asked for and received permission from the city fathers of Geneva to hold a special prayer service on their behalf.2 In one of only two sermons from the years prior to 1549 to be transcribed, he expressed concern that Lord’s name should not be blasphemed (Ps 115:2–3).3 He justified the prayer service for the besieged Lutherans on the basis of the spiritual union between the Genevan church and the German Lutherans. He invoked Ephesians 4:1-6, reminding the assembled “there is only one God, one Redeemer, only one true doctrine, one faith, one baptism.” He invoked 1 Corinthians 12:26, “If one member suffers, we must all have compassion.” For Calvin there was SBJT 21.4 (2017): 35-60 35 The Southern Baptist Journal of Theology 21.4 (2017) “no question” of a single member. -

JETS 61/2 (2018): 259–73 JOHN CALVIN’S DOCTRINE OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE SCOTT M. MANETSCH* Abstract: The theology of the Genevan reformer John Calvin (1509–1564) has frequently caused misunderstanding and elicited caricature and controversy. This is especially true of Cal- vin’s doctrine of the Christian life, which is often presented as authoritarian, legalistic, and se- vere. This essay describes prominent features of the reformer’s understanding of the Christian life, drawn from his commentaries, correspondence, and the Institutes of the Christian Re- ligion (especially Book 3), and argues that, for Calvin, the authentic Christian life is pat- terned after Christ’s death, resurrection, and ascension, made possible by the believer’s union with Christ through faith. Key words: John Calvin, Calvin’s Institutes, union with Christ, Christian life, exile, pie- ty, justification, sanctification, self-denial, suffering, vocation In his survey of the Reformation, Professor Lewis Spitz of Stanford Universi- ty once stated, “Calvin was one of those strong and consistent men of history who people either liked or disliked, adored or abhorred.”1 Indeed, it is virtually impossi- ble to remain neutral about John Calvin, the reformer of Geneva from 1536–1564. Many people have adored Calvin. The nineteenth-century Scottish theologian Wil- liam Cunningham stated, “Calvin is the man who, next to St. Paul, has done the most good to mankind.”2 Ernst Renan, a nineteenth-century French historian de- scribed Calvin as “the most Christian man of his age.”3 Philip Schaff, the American historian and founder of the American Society of Church History, said of Calvin: “Taking into account all his failings, he must be reckoned as one of the greatest and best men whom God raised up in the history of Christianity.”4 Or again, the fa- mous British preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon once said of Calvin: “The longer I live the clearer does it appear that John Calvin’s [theological] system is the nearest to perfection.”5 But other people have abhorred John Calvin.
