BLANCO The singular character of Rioja’s white varieties

2020 VINTAGE The 2020 harvest was characterised by the good balance between production and quality. It was an early harvest with abundant rain, allowing the fruit to mature quickly and evenly between different varieties and Rioja subregions. This is a particularly historic vintage for white Rioja wines. Barón de Ley’s Blanco 2020 is Pablo Tascon’s, our Technical Director, first vintage of this wine. Specialised in crafting premium white wines, he has replaced Verdejo with Garnacha Blanca and Tempranillo Blanco, which together with Viura showcase the singular character of Rioja’s indigenous white varieties.

VINEYARDS Tempranillo Blanco grapes come from our vineyard Finca Carbonera, the highest growing point in the DOCa Rioja (700-950m / 2300- 3100ft.). The natural farming characteristics provide ideal conditions for making fresh white wines with elegant, crisp acidity. Garnacha Blanca is grown in our estate in Rioja Oriental, Los Almendros, which Mediterranean climate and limestone soils retain the variety’s fresh and fruity character. Viura is from our estate in Arenzana, enjoying the perfect conditions to farm Rioja’s most characteristic white variety.

VINIFICATION Low temperature maceration and fermentation in temperature-controlled concrete vats preserve the aromatic expression and provide the tension, or long finish, which characterise Pablo Tascón’s wines.

TASTING NOTES Alcohol Serving temperature Colour: Pale yellow with greenish glints. 12,5% vol. 5ºC - 8ºC / 41ºF - 46ºF Aroma: We find an aromatic combination of wild herbs, including dill and coriander. Palate: Refreshing citrus flavours, specially lime and grapefruit, and Food pairing: coriander tartness. It has a long finish thanks to the perfectly balanced An ideal accompaniment to fish and seafood, but also salads alcohol and acidity, where we also find that creaminess and pasta dishes, as well as any meals with some heat, such as, characteristic of the Viura variety.
