Case Study – Passive House, Melrose, Scotland Dryseal plays Active role on ‘Passive’ House Low level green roof Dryseal was the ideal choice for the green roof waterproofing on this ‘Passive’ House in Easter Housebyres, Melrose, Scotland. The term ‘Passive’ House (Passivhaus in German) refers to the rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in buildings which reduces ecological footprint, resulting in an ultra-low energy building that requires minimal input for space heating or cooling.

Malcolm Horsburgh of MEH Builders and Joiners chose robust, eco-friendly and lightweight Dryseal to waterproof the main 130m2 green roof and 56m2 of the lower terrace and balcony area. ‘Wet lay’ GRP had been specified by the architect, but Malcom managed to persuade the architect and client of the advantages of Dryseal.

The Dryseal system is ideal for green roofs as it eradicates the need for a root barrier, The beautiful larch exterior and is safe with potable water, as there is no contamination from the GRP surface that might interfere with growth of the vegetation. Dryseal has other environmental advantages; it has exceptionally low embodied carbon, backed by ISO 14001 manufacturing standards.

Malcolm commented: “By using Dryseal rather than a GRP ‘wet lay’ product we were able to leave out the additional layer of plywood required for wet lay systems and increase the thickness of insulation by 20mm. More to the point, we also saved the client money!”

The site is on a slope, making the build tricky at times, but the Dryseal went on Two years on smoothly, taking four contractors only six days to install and the project was successfully completed in January 2015.
