A day later, all 14 outfits were sponsored. When It’s been a very busy April and May for our Club. On April their fly fishing outfit was announced, there were cheers and 23 rd we held our 11 th Annual Rendezvous. This event is our tears of joy. I was glad to help out in a small way. major fund rising event and membership drive of the year. It was held at a new venue this year – Rivernook Campgrounds. We had a very nice small meadows area reserved and everything worked out very nicely. There’s a more detailed report on page 5 which includes pictures and the winners of our C & R Tourney. On May 14 th we held our famous Kids Academy at the Kernville Hatchery. 15 kids graduated after learning casting, knots, fly tying, entomology, conservation and catching. The kids were able to fish the hatchery and caught trout up to 5 pounds. The kids ended up getting wet from all the “splishing” and splashing from the big trout. Many of the kids caught trout on flies they tied earlier in the day, taught by Gary Applebee. All the kids had big smiles at the end of the day. Lignar. 8(4) 2009, 37-50 DIVERSITY AND ROLE OF INSECTS IN FIR FOREST ECOSYSTEMS IN THE ŚWIĘTOKRZYSKI NATIONAL PARK AND THE ROZTOCZAŃSKI NATIONAL PARK Kazimierz Gądek University of Agriculture in Krakow Abstract. The study contains the results of the investigations conducted over a period of many years on the biodiversity of insect fauna of firs in strict and partial reserves of the Świętokrzyski and Roztoczański National Parks. The species structure of individual functional groups of insects was analysed, together with their role in the ecosystem and their influence on the course of natural ecological processes in the environment, depend- ing on the health of the host plant. The degree of similarity was determined for the species composition of insect fauna found in the analysed areas of the parks. A considerable bio- logical and scientific role which has been played for several decades by strict reserves has been stressed. The reserves are indispensable for the creation of appropriate conditions for the development and survival of insect species of great natural value, being rare in the fauna of fir stands at the north-eastern limits of the natural range of this tree species. Key words: insect fauna, fir, reserves, commercial forests INTRODUCTION The study contains the results of the investigations on the biodiversity of insect fauna in fir strict and partial reserves of the Świętokrzyski and Roztoczański National Parks. The investigations conducted in the above mentioned national parks were con- nected with the processes of regression or even dying back of fir observed throughout Central Europe within the natural range limits of this species.

Vivaldi, F 84000 Avignon Summary Estimating the past annual activity of the fir budworm Choristoneura murinana (Hb.) (Lep., Tortricidae) through retrospective analysis of the foliage and growth losses of the trees. The budworm Choristoneura murinana has recently proved to severely damage silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) stands in the south of France. Understanding this situation, perhaps only new apparently, and assessing its implications would need to have informations on the past activity of the pest. Three criteria from trees likely to supply such data were tested : the needle loss of the shoots, the annual length increment of the branches and the annual radial increment of the trees. Observations were made in the departement of Ardèche, in two plots of a mature silver fir stand infested by the budworm. Twenty dominant-codominant trees were selected in each plot. Branch samples were collected both from the top third and from the middle third of their crowns. Needle loss and defoliation estimates were based on rating of the shoots under consideration in percentage loss or defoliation classes. Radial growth was measured at breast height. One starting supposition was that estimating the respective needle loss percentages for the different age classes of shoots, being only taken into account those shoots apparently not yet affected by the natural needle fall, would give values approximately equal to those of the annual rates of budworm defoliation for the corresponding years.

I’ve been gone a lot during the past the lower Deschutes River two months and didn’t fish as often as I would have liked, but I did go on the club’s 2 Annual fly-tying evening and steelhead outing on the Lower Deschutes. I did hook a nice one, but lost it after swap meet about five minutes. It was still a blast, and I heard some great stories about steelhead Outings that didn’t get away. I did manage to land a seven-pound rainbow while fishing with 2 Fourth Annual Crooked River my son in Nevada. It was the biggest trout I’ve caught this year; I can’t complain. Cleanup and Fishing Outing Bob Mullong (a.k.a. Capt. Caddis) submitted a $2500 grant proposal to produce 2 Outings for 2011 DVDs to help educators outside Central Oregon develop their own Kokanee Kar- Education nival kid’s education programs. The Oregon Council of FFF awarded a $1,000 grant 3 Beginning single-handed Spey casting in September, and the national FFF Foundation presented a check for the remain- 3 Building blocks for successful ing $1500 at the October COF general meeting.
