Great Wall of China Travel Information
Great Wall of China Travel Information About Great Wall of China There is a Chinese saying that “He who has not been to the Great Wall is not a true man.” Built in 220–206 BC to withstand invading Mongol tribes from the steppes, the Great Wall of China is the largest man-made structure ever made. Stretching for more than 5,500 miles from the rugged Liupan Mountains near Guyuan to the Bohai Sea near Qinhuangdao, this colossal monument embodies China's inherent spirit and is one of the oldest surviving testaments to China's rich culture. The Great Wall of China is a long man-made wall built using tamped earth, brick, stone, wood, and other materials. The purpose of building the Great Wall of China was to keep out invaders and check military intrusions. It now acts as a tribute to the Chinese who were responsible for building this wall. The wall runs from Shanhaiguan in Hebei province (in the east) to Jiayuguan in Gansu province (in the west). It comprises of walls, armories, barracks, stables, shelters on the wall, watch towers, horse tracks, forts and passes. To ensure proper communication among the army units, several signal towers were constructed on the hilltops or other higher positions along the wall. The wooden gates were used as a trap against those who stealthily tried to pass. People from different occupations built the Great Wall during the three dynasties namely, Qin, Han and Ming. The most well-preserved version of the site dates back to the Ming dynasty. UNESCO recognized it as a World Heritage Site in 1987, and people from all over the world visit the region to get to walk on the Great Wall of China. -

Great Wall Marathon
Great Wall Marathon Lori Rusinski of Eagle Watch recently traveled with her husband and son to China to participate in Great Wall of China Marathon. The 13-mile race included a three-mile stretch on the Great Wall of China. Lori Rusinski of Eagle Watch loves to run marathons - even across the Great Wall of China. Along with her son, Jesse Rusinski, she participated in a half-marathon last month, about 13 miles, in China with a portion of the race along the wondrous wall. Lori's husband, Gerry, also made the trip and participated in a 5K race offered as part of the marathon event. The Great Wall Marathon is organized by Adventure Marathon (www.adventure-marathon.com), which runs marathons across the globe, combining sports and exercise with great scenery. Other races take place in South Africa, Jordan and Greenland. Mrs. Rusinski, 55, began running in her mid-40s to manage her weight. "Keeping my weight under control has always been a challenge for me," she said. She started running with a work colleague from Weiss & Associates in Atlanta, where she is a paralegal, during their lunch hour. Soon she was running in local races, some half-marathons and a full marathon in January 2009. "It becomes addicting," she said about running. She and her running partner heard about the Great Wall Marathon and thought it would be a great adventure. "I thought, 'If I don't do it now, I will never do it,'" Mrs. Rusinski said. "I needed to seize the moment." While her running buddy was unable to make the trip, Mrs. -
