Dwi Putri Aristyani. 2018002109. An Analysis Directive Speech Acts Used by Captain Jack Sparrow as the Main Character in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 The Dead Men Tell No Tales Movie. English Education Department Teacher Training and Education Faculty Sarjanawiyata Tamansiswa University Yogyakarta 2019.
The objectives of the study are (1) to describe types of directive speech acts used by Captain Jack Sparrow conversations, (2) to identify the functions of directive speech acts used by Captain Jack Sparrow, and (3) to find out the most dominant type of directive speech act used by Captain Jack Sparrow as the main character in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 The Dead Men Tell No Tales movie.
The type of the study is Discourse Analysis. The data of this study was utterances used by Captain Jack Sparrow as the main character in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 The Dead Men Tell No Tales movie that contained directive speech acts. To find the data the researcher used note taking by writing down the movie script. She collects the data to analyze the types of directive speech acts and the functions of directive speech acts. She analyzed the data by using Yule (1996: 54) speech acts theory. In this step, the researcher analyzed the data which were taken from the conversations or utterances in the form of words or utterances used by Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 The Dead Men Tell No Tales movie. The data was categorized into types of directive speech acts, the functions of directive speech acts, and the most dominant type of directive speech act used by Captain Jack Sparrow as the main character in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 The Dead Men Tell No Tales movie. The researcher also explained why the utterance includes one of the classification types of speech acts and functions of speech act. In this case, the researcher used follow the table to analyzed in utterance.
The results of the research show that (1) there are 5 types of directive speech acts that used by Captain Jack Sparrow as the main character in Pirates of the Caribbean 5 The Dead Men Tell No Tales movie, namely order, command, request, suggestion, and forbidding, (2) the functions of directive speech acts were classified into 5 functions, namely commanding, requesting, suggesting, warning, and questioning. The highest frequency of the function of directive speech act used by Captain Jack Sparrow is commanding, (3) the most dominant type of directive speech act used by Captain Jack Sparrow is command.
