The Festvox Indic Frontend for Grapheme-to-Phoneme Conversion Alok Parlikar, Sunayana Sitaram, Andrew Wilkinson and Alan W Black Carnegie Mellon University Pittsburgh, USA aup, ssitaram, aewilkin, [email protected] Abstract Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems convert text into phonetic pronunciations which are then processed by Acoustic Models. TTS frontends typically include text processing, lexical lookup and Grapheme-to-Phoneme (g2p) conversion stages. This paper describes the design and implementation of the Indic frontend, which provides explicit support for many major Indian languages, along with a unified framework with easy extensibility for other Indian languages. The Indic frontend handles many phenomena common to Indian languages such as schwa deletion, contextual nasalization, and voicing. It also handles multi-script synthesis between various Indian-language scripts and English. We describe experiments comparing the quality of TTS systems built using the Indic frontend to grapheme-based systems. While this frontend was designed keeping TTS in mind, it can also be used as a general g2p system for Automatic Speech Recognition. The origins, evolution and decline of the Khojki script Juan Bruce The origins, evolution and decline of the Khojki script Juan Bruce Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Master of Arts in Typeface Design, University of Reading, 2015. 5 Abstract The Khojki script is an Indian script whose origins are in Sindh (now southern Pakistan), a region that has witnessed the conflict between Islam and Hinduism for more than 1,200 years. After the gradual occupation of the region by Muslims from the 8th century onwards, the region underwent significant cultural changes. This dissertation reviews the history of the script and the different uses that it took on among the Khoja people since Muslim missionaries began their activities in Sindh communities in the 14th century. It questions the origins of the Khojas and exposes the impact that their transition from a Hindu merchant caste to a broader Muslim community had on the development of the script. During this process of transformation, a rich and complex creed, known as Satpanth, resulted from the blend of these cultures. The study also considers the roots of the Khojki writing system, especially the modernization that the script went through in order to suit more sophisticated means of expression. As a result, through recording the religious Satpanth literature, Khojki evolved and left behind its mercantile features, insufficient for this purpose. Through comparative analysis of printed Khojki texts, this dissertation examines the use of the script in Bombay at the beginning of the 20th century in the shape of Khoja Ismaili literature. -

The Kaktovik numerals are a set of base-20 digits with a sub-base of 5—that is, a penta-vigesimal system. Graphically, the sub-base forms the upper part of the digit and the remaining units the lower part, an iconic design that lends itself to graphical manipulation for arithmetic. Kaktovik numerals are part of the curriculum in the North Slope Borough School District of Alaska. Though designed by speakers of Iñupiaq Eskimo (ISO code [esi]), they are equally suited to the penta-vigesimal systems of other Inuit and Yupik languages of Alaska, Canada and Russia, and they have the support of the Inuit Circumpolar Council. Thanks to Deborah Anderson of the Universal Scripts Project for her assistance. Design Kaktovik numerals were made intentionally distinct from decimal Hindu-Arabic digits so that there could be no confusion between them. In speech as well, Kaktovik digits have been named in Iñupiaq and Hindu-Arabic digits in English in order to keep them distinct. There are 19 counting digits, composed of straight strokes joined at sharp angles, and a graphically distinct zero . The counting digits occupy the space of an upright golden rectangle, with a unit square at bottom and a smaller golden rectangle at top. The top rectangle is occupied by up to three horizontal strokes that tally the quinary sub-base (null, 틅, 틊, 틏).
