NATIONWIDE TOUR STORYLINES – Week of Oct. 3rd Children’s Hospital Classic Oct. 6-9 Black Creek Mountain, Chattanooga, Tenn. Purse: $500,000 First Prize: $90,000 2010 Champion: Scott Gardiner 144 players 23rd of 26 events PREVIEW OF THE FUTURE? – Two of the Nationwide Tour’s youngest players Danny Lee and Harris English provided a glimpse of what the future might hold over the weekend at the WNB Golf Classic. Lee, 21, and English, 22, emerged from Sunday’s crowded leader board and met in a one-hole playoff with Lee taking home the trophy. It was Lee’s first Nationwide Tour title in 16 starts this year and moved him to fourth on the money list. The 2008 U.S. Amateur champion headed for the Korean Open on Monday. Thanks to a check for $56,700, English is now 79th on the money list and charging towards his short-term goal of qualifying for the Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island. His 62 on Saturday was a tournament course record and a personal best. PRESIDENTS CUP / MOST EVER – Eleven former Nationwide Tour members will be competing in next month’s Presidents Cup, more than in any of the previous eight Cup competitions. The U.S. team features eight alums, including Nos. 1 and 2 Matt Kuchar and Steve Stricker. The others are Webb Simpson, Nick Watney, Bubba Watson, David Toms, Jim Furyk and Bill Haas. The International team features three former Nationwide Tour players, including their No. 1 Jason Day, plus Ernie Els and Aaron Baddeley. In 2007 and 2009, there were nine alums total on both teams. 2011 IS DOWN TO JUST FOUR EVENTS – The Children’s Hospital Classic is the 23rd of 26 events on the 2011 Nationwide Tour schedule. The Chattanooga event will be followed by two more full-field events, the Miccosukee Championship in Miami and the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters at PGA TOUR headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. The 26th and final event is the Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island in Charleston, S.C. (Oct. 27-30) where only the top 60 are eligible to compete. Key numbers hanging over the heads of players over the next four weeks are 100 (top 100 offers conditional status for 2012 on Nationwide Tour), 60 (top 60 assures spot in Championship and fully-exempt status for 2012 on Nationwide Tour) and 25 (top 25 earn PGA TOUR card for 2012). “HOMECOMING” FOR HARRIS ENGLISH – Three weeks ago (Sept. 13th) Harris English announced in Chattanooga he was turning professional and had accepted Nationwide Tour membership that was afforded him as a result of his Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational win in July. English chose Chattanooga and the Children’s Hospital Classic to make his announcement as he spent four years attending the Baylor School there, prior to heading to the University of Georgia. He was a member of four straight Baylor state championship teams (2004-07). RUSSELL HENLEY JOINS ENGLISH IN CHATTANOOGA FIELD – Stadion Classic at UGA winner Russell Henley earned a spot in the Children's Hospital Classic via Monday's qualifying event. He joins English, his former UGA teammate, in the field. NCAA CHAMP JOHN PETERSON MAKES PRO DEBUT – 2011 All-American and NCAA individual champion John Peterson will make his professional debut this week on the Nationwide Tour. The LSU product also qualified on Monday in Chattanooga. Peterson has one previous and very successful start on the Nationwide Tour. He was runner-up to Harris English at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. BUD CAULEY TO MAKE HOMETOWN START IN WINN-DIXIE EVENT – One of golf’s promising young players, Bud Cauley, has accepted an invitation to play in the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open presented by Planters (Oct. 20-23). The Jacksonville resident will compete in front of hometown fans for the first time since turning professional in June. The former University of Alabama All-American and Walker Cup participant will make a start at the PGA TOUR’s Frys.com Open this week in California as a sponsor exemption before returning home to tee it up at Dye’s Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass the following week. It will be his seventh PGA TOUR start. He has earned $331,150, with three top-25 finishes, including a T4 at the Viking Classic. ONE MORE POSITIVE CHARITY STORY – The Preferred Health Systems Wichita (Kan.) Open is the latest Nationwide Tour event to share a positive 2012 charity story. The Open donated a record $212,000 to 40 Wichita area charities, the largest single donation in the event’s 22-year history. Congratulations to tournament director Roy Turner and the entire team and sponsor base in Wichita! JAKE OWEN AND MARK BRYAN IN CONCERT – The final two events on the Nationwide Tour schedule will not only feature some of the most competitive golf of the year but top musicians in concert. Jake Owen, whose “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” was No. 1 on Billboard’s County Music chart for two weeks in September, will perform on the back lawn of TPC Sawgrass on Friday evening of the Winn-Dixie Jacksonville Open. Owen was an aspiring professional golfer before a teenage wakeboarding accident derailed his dream. Mark Bryan will entertain along with Branford Marsalis, Pat Green and Colt Ford at the Pro-Am Jam on Tuesday, Oct. 25th at Daniel Island Club in conjunction with the Nationwide Tour Championship in Charleston, S.C. Prior to the concert, Bryan and 23 other celebrities will participate in a pro-am at Daniel Island. Proceeds from the concert will benefit Carolina Studios, a non-profit youth music and media arts program based in Charleston and spearheaded by Bryan of Hootie & The Blowfish. PLAYER SPOTLIGHT – After hovering in and around No. 60 on the money list much of the summer, Miguel Angel Carballo has found his form in the last two weeks. A playoff runner-up (Soboba) and T7 (WNB) have put the Argentine in the thick of “The 25” race. He has moved from 60th to 21st on the money list in this his fifth year on the Nationwide Tour. DID YOU KNOW? – Brian Vranesh of Phoenix, AZ has gone 335 holes without making a three-putt. His last one was in the final round of the Utah Championship in late July. He played the final 11 holes that day and all 18 rounds since three-putt free, with his last round being last Friday in Midland. “GETAWAY” PROMOTION ENTERS 9th WEEK – Golf Channel’s “Nationwide Tour Hawaii Getaway” promotion enters its ninth week. One person will win a trip for two to the 2012 Sony Open in Hawaii where the Nationwide Tour class of 2011 will make its 2012 PGA TOUR debut. BIRTHDAY BOYS – Celebrating birthdays this week in Chattanooga are Cliff Kresge on Monday (3rd) and Bob May on Thursday (6th). Both turn 43.
