This year, and beyond, the recreational boating safety community is engaged in a debate over the merits of mandatory like jacket wear for all recreational boaters. Even though recreational boating fatalities have decreased dramatically over the past several decades, results may have leveled off. To gain significant improvement, many are looking for the one or two initiatives that may make a step toward improvement in boating safety results.

Two areas that come readily to my mind are alcohol consumption and personal flotation device (PFD), or life jacket, wear.

Efforts to reduce or eliminate drinking while boating have been at a high, sustained level for several years. The hazards associated with alcohol consumption while boating have gained higher awareness levels in recent years. When accidents occur, media stories routinely speculate or report on any connection with alcohol. Beyond that, boating under the influence (BUI) laws continue to be tightened with regards to both levels of intoxication and penalties. While out for a day on the water, these Girl Scouts and their leaders exhibit an important safe boating habit -– wearing their life jackets.
