    Investigating the Hydroelectric Generator: Clean, Powerful Alternative Energy Eric Heimark 2nd Semester Research Project Applied Science Research Throughout 2nd semester of 12th grade, the theory, efficiency, and practicality of hydroelectric alternative energy were investigated by Eric Heimark, an Applied Science Research student. A proof of concept hydroelectric generator was designed and built in order to demonstrate micro-hydroelectric energy production and a larger high quality hydroelectric generator was built to demonstrate scalability. The hydroelectric generators employed turbines attached to a generator rotor. As high-pressure water turned the turbine and rotor around a stationary stator, an electromotive force, and therefore an electric current, was produced inside the generators. The micro-hydroelectric system was shown to consistently produce electricity and the superior hydroelectric generator was revealed to produce upwards of 70 watts, sufficiently large enough for a myriad of real- world applications like lighting bulbs and charging a Razr battery in roughly 2.5 hours. Heimark 2 I. Motivation and History Water wheels have been used for thousands of years for irrigation, perhaps up to 500 years before the Common Era. Waterpower was first used though for grinding corn around 100 years BCE [9]. The type of water wheel used depended on how fast the stream or river flowed. There were three types of water wheels: overshot, undershot and horizontal. Overshot were used for slow moving water and undershot wheels were used in fast-moving water in order to turn wheels that could be connected to heavy machinery in factories [9]. In contrast, horizontal water wheels, which also required fast-moving water, were used to grind grain into flour.

ORCID: Oyebode (0000-0003-1094-1149) Abstract The performance of two micro hydro power turbines (Pelton Wheel and Cross Flow Turbines) were evaluated at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) dam. The Dam has a net head of 4 m, flow rate of 0.017m3 and theoretical hydropower energy of 668W. The two turbines were tested and the optimized value of operating conditions namely; angle of inclination (15o above tangent, tangential and 15o below tangent), height to impact point (200mm, 250mm and 300mm) and length to impact point (50mm, 100mm and 150mm) were pre-set at their various levels for both Turbines. The optimum values of the process output or measured parameters were determined statistically using a 33X2 factorial experiment in three replicates. An optimum Turbine speed (538.38rpm) in off load condition was achieved at 250mm height to impact point, 150mm length to impact point and angle at tangential inclination. Similar combination also yielded an optimum turbine torque of 46.16kNm for Pelton Wheel Turbine. For the Crossflow Turbine, an optimum turbine speed of 330.09rpm was achieved by pre-setting 250mm height to impact point, 100mm length to impact point and 15º below tangent. Same combination also yielded an optimum turbine torque of 39.07kNm.

At the top of the list is Bob Harberg (Principal Engineer––Utilities, City of Boul- der), who initiated the effort and saw it through to completion. The document––by Silvia Pettem and Carol Ellinghouse––is a revision and update of A History of the Waterworks of Boulder, Colorado, written in 1986 by Phyllis Smith. As co-au- thors, Pettem and Ellinghouse worked together, with Pettem refining and filling in the gaps in the earlier history, and Ellinghouse (retired Water Resources Coordinator) provid- ing much of the material on the more recent past. Pettem also drew on the technical knowledge of individuals who made, and continue to make, Boulder’s waterworks their life work. Mann Petroleum Pioneers In 1859 Edwin Drake first applied well- drilling technology to produce significant quantities of crude petroleum at Titusville, Pennsylvania.1-10 Few realize, however, that Samuel Kier had refined crude oil in Pittsburgh by distillation five years earlier than Drake. Kier’s primary product was kerosene, a clean burning lamp fuel. To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the drilling of the Drake well, the American Chemical Society (ACS) will present a National Historical Chemical Landmark award commemorating Samuel Kier’s work in Pittsburgh on August 26, and another to the Drake Well Museum at Titusville on August 27. Today’s extensive worldwide petroleum industry is a direct outgrowth of the efforts of Drake and Kier, first demonstrated in Western Pennsylvania.
