C-------- Vibration of Outlet Pipes, Glen Canyon Dam I Introduction — During operation of the outlet tubes in 1983, rough operation and were noted for gate openings greater than 75 percent at a reservo „ " .. GPO 8523 vation of 3704.2 (report of telephone conversation June 22, 1983, from Gamble to Burgi). The flow rate which produced smoother operation through each valve was 4,200 ft3/s. In an effort to learn the cause of the noise and vibration, Frizell and Elgin conducted field measurements on all four outlet tubes on June 19, 1984, see appendix. They discovered that the outlet tubes in the vicinity of the dresser couplings had a maximum peak-to- peak displacement of 3.47 mils (0.089 mm) at a frequency of about 176 Hz. This frequency corresponds approximately to the audible tone of F below middle C. Their measurements were made with a gate opening of 81 percent. This opening produced a discharge of 4,350 ft3/s per valve at a reservoir elevation of 3697.45. Possible causes for the noise include: a. Cavitation of the valve or man door b. -

The authors report 27 human poisonings from ingestion of puffer fish in patients treated at Toxicology Centers in the states of Santa Catarina and Bahia, Brazil, between 1984 and January 2009. Poisonings were classified as moderate (52%) and severe (33%), two deaths were observed. Early diagnosis is very important to ensure respiratory support. One of the two dams at the W.H. Weatherspoon Power Plant near Lumberton had previously been classified as posing an intermediate risk, requiring a safety inspection once every five years, while the other dam was exempt from safety inspections. One pond contains coal ash; the other stores water in a cooling pond. A high hazard rating by the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources calls for increasing annual inspections for structural integrity to once a year. “If the coal ash storage pond were to fail, material from the coal ash storage area would likely flow southeast and could impact four occupied homes located closely together on the east side of both the coal ash storage pond and the cooling pond,” said DENR spokesman Jamie Kritzer. -

A string of successful projects, from the opening of the St. Croix fishway to the renewal of commercial fishing on Card Mill Stream in Franklin, have fueled growing momentum for restoration of rivers and streams, big and small. This report is an update on the status of river herring runs in eastern Maine. It describes the value of river herring and some of the many projects underway to allow river herring to swim upstream to their spawning habitat. Because river herring are a keystone species in freshwater and marine systems—and are so responsive to restoration efforts—they have become a focus of the Downeast Fisheries Partnership effort to restore fisheries in eastern Maine. -

Zebra Mussel Task Force Final Recommendations Introduction In November 2009, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs (EEA) convened the Zebra Mussel Task Force (ZMTF) to make recommendations to the Secretary of EEA on an updated action plan to address the presence of zebra mussels (ZMs) in water bodies of the Commonwealth. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and Department of Fish and Game (DFG) play an essential role in protecting and preserving the natural resource of the Commonwealth in general and in particular with respect to ZMs. DCR is steward of one of the largest state parks systems in the country. Its 450,000 acres is made up of forests, parks, greenways, historic sites and landscapes, seashores, lakes, ponds, reservoirs and watersheds. DCR’s mission is to “protect, promote and enhance our common wealth of natural, cultural and recreational resources.” The DCR Lakes and Ponds Program has statewide responsibility to manage, protect, and restore the Commonwealth’s lakes and ponds. As part of this responsibility, the DCR Lakes and Ponds Program provides statewide leadership in aquatic invasive species (AIS) planning, management, technical assistance and education. The DCR Lakes and Ponds program has developed an aggressive, multi- pronged program to address the threat of AIS that includes hands-on management of AIS, training programs for citizens, boat ramp monitoring, education and outreach programs and materials, and ongoing planning and research to keep up to date on the science of AIS management. The Office of Fishing and Boating Access (OFBA) in the DFG is responsible for constructing, providing for the management of and regulating state public access facilities such as boat ramps at water bodies across the Commonwealth. -
