GAME NOTES 2 2019-20 Binghamton Bearcats Basketball www.bubearcats.com

Sessoms already over 800 career points Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms is averaging 19.3 points this season and has quickly moved his career total to 820 points less than halfway through his second collegiate season. He currently ranks ninth in Div. I era scoring at Bingham- ton and his career average (18.2 ppg.) is on pace to reach 1K in early February (midway through conference play) and become the program’s all-time scoring leader (1,705 pts.) by the end of his junior season. Sessoms is also on pace to sur- pass the 2,000-point mark by the time he graduates, which would make him a 2K scorer in both high school and college.

Sarr nets 20 points in first game without mask After playing seven games with a mask to protect a broken nose, senior forward Pierre Sarr shed it for the Youngstown State game and delivered a game-high 20 points — his second 20+ game of the season. Sarr had his nose broken four minutes into the Nov. 10 game at No. 1 Michigan State. He had a recent string of four straight games with double-digit re- bounds (13-14-15-11) and now has scored 20 or more points in two of his last four games (career-high 24 pts. vs. Colgate on Dec. 4). He has two double-doubles this season.

Mills sizzling from backcourt Freshman guard Brenton Mills has quickly and quietly become a crucial element to the Bearcats’ starting lineup early in his collegiate career. Mills is averaging 10.7 points, fourth-best among America East freshmen. He is shooting 39% from 3-point range (4th in AE) and 83% from the line (15-for-18). Mills hit 5-of-7 3-pointers against Colgate and has scored in double-figures in five of his last eight games.

Tinsley nets second Rookie of Week honor Freshman forward George Tinsley earned his second America East Rookie of the Week honor with his selection on Dec. 2. Tinsley averaged 19.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week and along the way, registered his third double-double of the season. Tinsley scored a season-high 24 points with 10 rebounds at Loyola and shot 50 percent for the week. His selection gives BU back-to-back ROW honors, as Brenton Mills was the choice on Nov. 25.

Sessoms, Mills sweep America East weekly awards Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms and freshman guard Brenton Mills gave BU a 1-2 sweep of the America East weekly awards for Nov. 25. It’s the first time in six years (POW Jordan Reed and ROW Marlon Beck in 2013-14) that BU has swept both awards. Sessoms averaged 24.5 points in a 2-0 week to earn his first Player of the Week honor. After pour- ing in 33 points with 12 rebounds against NJIT, Sessoms added 16 points and a career-high seven assists vs. Army. Mills earned his first collegiate honor with Rookie of the Week honors. He averaged 16.0 points on 52% shooting and had a crucial block to set up Sessoms’ heroics at NJIT.

Sessoms has last word in epic battle of elite point guards The game at NJIT featured two point guards on the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List (nation’s top mid-major player) as sophomore Sam Sessoms and NJIT junior Zach Cooks squared off and guarded each other for much of the Nov. 20 game. Cooks scored a school-record 35 points (11-of-22 FG) but Sessoms countered with 33 points (one shy of his school record), 12 rebounds, five assists, a crucial block and the game-winning driving layup with 2.2 seconds left to give BU the win. Sessoms scored 27 points in the second half to rally the Bearcats, who trailed by 16 points in the final period.

Petcash faces brother in BU vs. BU game Freshman guard Dan Petcash faced all-too-familiar Boston junior guard and older brother Andrew Petcash when the teams met in Binghamton on Dec. 7. The pair last appeared on the same court for Pine-Richland High School (in Pitts- burgh) in the 2017 Pennsylvania state tournament semifinal game. Both were honored two years apart as Pittsburgh Post- Gazette “Fab 5” players during their senior seasons. Andrew (1,643 career pts., 2nd all-time) averaged 19.9 points in his final scholastic season in 2016-17 and Dan (1,156 pts., 6th all-time) averaged 22.1 points as a senior last winter. Parents Robert and Kristen and around 20 family and friends were in attendance.

Tinsley earns first honor of season Freshman forward George Tinsley was named America East Rookie of the Week for Nov. 18. He posted back-to-back double-doubles — the first Bearcat to do so in seven years. Tinsley averaged 15.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in two games, highlighted by a 21-point, 12-rebound showing in the win over Sacred Heart.

Sarr returns (with mask) after breaking nose, dominating on glass Graduate transfer and starting forward Pierre Sarr returned to action against Sacred Heart donning a face mask after missing 1+ games with a broken nose. Sarr was elbowed just four minutes into the game at No. 1 Michigan State on Nov. 10 and missed the rest of that game plus Wednesday’s game at Columbia. He sealed BU’s win over Sacred Heart with a driving layup with 0:33 left. Sarr has worn the mask for the last five games and has pulled down double-digit rebounds in four straight (13-14-15-11). Bearcats fall to No. 1 Michigan State in first-ever game against a No. 1 Binghamton ran into a much bigger and more experienced Michigan State team Sunday in East Lansing and the top- ranked Spartans cruised to a 100-47 win at Breslin Center. MSU shot 57% in the first half to open up a 31-point cushion and wound up with five in double figures. Backcourt mates Sam Sessoms (12 pts.) and Richard Caldwell, Jr. (11 pts.) led a Bearcats squad that lost starting forward and leading scorer Pierre Sarr just four minutes into the game. Sarr sus- tained an injury and didn’t return. Sessoms named to America East Preseason Team, Lou Henson Watch Sophomore guard Sam Sessoms, reigning America East Rookie of the Year, was named to the six-player conference preseason team and also was selected on the Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List (nation’s top mid-major player). Sessoms ranked fifth in the nation in freshman scoring last year (17.8 ppg.) and was a third team all-conference selec- tion. He ranked 53rd in the country in field goals, scored 25 or more points seven times and tied the school record with a 34-point barrage against Hartford on Feb. 27 (24 points in the second half). Bearcats retool roster, are flooded with newcomers, young talent Due to an off-season cycle that included five graduations, three transfers, one late departure to international pro ball and a tragic death, Binghamton has a roster that is small in quantity and relatively inexperienced. The 2019-20 team has 10 available scholarship players, eight of whom are newcomers to the program and seven of whom are underclassmen. The team’s total number of Division I seasons of experience is five, and three of those belong to graduate transfer Pierre Sarr). Bearcats boost size with recruiting class After playing undersized in the post throughout the 2018-19 season, BU bulked up on the recruiting trail and the roster now has four players 6-foot-8 or taller, including a seven-foot starting center (Yarden Willis) and a 6-foot-11 backup (Ador Athuai). Last season, talented but undersized 6-foot-4 Chancellor Barnard started in the post. In October, Barnard was taken by the South Bay Lakers in the second round of the NBA G-League Draft. Athletics family suffers loss with tragic death of Calistus Anyichie Binghamton men’s basketball suffered a tragic loss in July when 6-foot-9 rising sophomore center Calistus Anyichie (pro- nounced uh-NEE-CHEE) died in a drowning accident. One of the most well-known and beloved athletes on campus, Any- ichie was born in Nigeria and went to high school in New Jersey before choosing Binghamton. He had a promising basket- ball career and aspirations to be a diplomat after graduation. The athletics department held a tribute to Anyichie before the Nov. 16 men’s basketball home opener.
