א סיון תשע“ט | 55th Anniversary Celebration June 4, 2019 Farber Hebrew Day School Yonatan & Merav Edrei Farber Hebrew Day School - Yeshivat Akiva proudly honors Merav and Yonatan Edrei, community leaders and educators, who have served as Detroit’s Bnei Akiva Shlichim for the past four years. Yonatan, a sixteenth generation Jerusalamite, and Merav, a second generation Israeli, were motivated to come on Shlichut by their desire to unite the communities of America and Israel through language, personal connections and shared experiences. Individually, and as a couple, they work tirelessly on behalf of our children, our communities and our school. As a beloved Hebrew language teacher and in-school Shalicha, Merav spearheaded FHDS’s Israel-related programming and community-wide Yom Ha’Atzmaut celebrations. Her efforts bring the sounds and sights of Israel to FHDS’s hallways and classrooms. Yonatan, as head of Bnei Akiva of Metro Detroit, is responsible for its three local branches, mentoring its youth leaders as well as implementing Bnei Akiva’s community programming and regional events. In addition, he served as a religious Zionist liaison to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and youth liaison to local school and synagogue boards. Merav, Yonatan, and their children, Aviad and Dovid, return to Israel this summer. Yonatan plans to continue in organizational work as an informal educator and Merav is returning to a career as a teacher and archaeologist. Through their actions, Yonatan and Merav powerfully strengthened the values of Am Yisrael and Ahavat Yisrael exhibited at FHDS and in the Detroit Jewish community. Farber Hebrew Day School - Yeshivat Akiva is forever grateful to their commitment.
א סיון תשע“ט | 55th Anniversary Celebration June 4, 2019 Message From Our President It was a lazy Sunday afternoon and I was doing some yard work while our kids were playing in our backyard. Nili, our Kindergartner, was busy playing in the sandbox and singing joyfully and I didn’t pay much attention to what she was singing. If she was happy, then I was happy. The scene continued for several more minutes until I ultimately decided that I should take my fatherly responsibilities a little more seriously and see what exactly she was doing and singing. As I got closer, I started to hear some Hebrew lyrics (this was a good sign, especially considering what Nili sometimes sings ;-)) and as I got even closer, the lyrics became more discernable, causing my face to light up with a big smile when I heard “Yom Ha’atzmut, Heh B’Iyar.” A feeling of contentment overcame me...one of our school’s primary missions is to teach our kids a love for Israel and to walk around as proud Zionists. Here was proof that by the young stage of Kindergarten, kids are signing Israeli songs and more importantly, know the date of Israel’s Independence Day.
How do we succeed in this mission? Our school dedicates a lot of resources towards instilling a love of Israel into our students and our dinner honorees this evening represent this perfectly. Yonatan and Merav Edrei came to our community four years ago eager and excited to share their energy and love for Israel with us. From Shabbatonim to SNIF, to Shakshuka in the Sukkah, an infusion of and love for Israel has been palpable. Yonatan’s calm and steady leadership, coupled with an impressive knowledge of Halacha and Torah, set a great example and fostered a great bond with many of our students. Merav has been such a valuable Hebrew & Judaic Studies teacher in our school, bringing tremendous passion, creativity, and a positive attitude that we will miss dearly. She taught such a wide level of classes, from Second Grade to High School with a fervent can-do attitude that was both contagious and welcomed! We will sorely miss her presence in our school.
Please join me in expressing a tremendous Hakarat Ha’Tov to Yonatan and Merav for all they have so selflessly given to our community over these past four years. We will miss you both and look forward to visiting with you in Eretz Yisrael!

א סיון תשע“ט | 55th Anniversary Celebration June 4, 2019 Message From Our Head of School Shalom!
The Torah commands us to count 49 days beginning with the 2nd day of Passover upon bringing the Omer sacrifice in the Temple. In separate verses the Rabbis of the Talmud deduce that we are to count in two ways - we are to count each day and we are to count weeks. The practice has developed that when counting weeks we include the days. As an example, on the eighth day we say in Hebrew “today is the eighth day (counting days) which is 1 week and 1 day (counting weeks) to the counting of the Omer.” The fiftieth day from starting the count is the celebration of Shavuot. Clearly, the counting from Pesach through the eve of Shavuot charts an undeniable connection between the two holidays. Passover is our redemption from slavery and 50 days later the Jewish people experience God’s revelation at Mt. Sinai through the giving and receiving of His holy Torah. The number itself conveys meaning. Seven represents wholeness and completeness. There are seven days of the week, seven years in the Shmittah cycle, and seven words in the first verse of the Torah - all examples of the Bible’s way of expressing a full cycle and sense of completeness. Returning to the Omer counting, we engage in seven cycles of seven to arrive at 49. With seven representing completeness then seven cycles of seven is the ultimate paradigm for wholeness and completeness or in other words ‘holiness’. In Kabbalistic literature the next digit after seven represents one degree holier than the holy cycle of seven. By extension, the number 50, which is one more than seven cycles of seven is that point of ultimate holiness or kedusha mai-al l’kudasha - holiness beyond holiness. Hence Shavuot is that point in time most propitious for receiving the Torah - exactly fifty days after the Israelites were redeemed from slavery. The Yoval or Jubilee year mirrors sefira counting. It is the next year following seven seven-year Shmittah cycles. Again, we see another example of Kedusha mai-al l’kudasha - holiness beyond holiness. One message we can glean from this is the idea that we never end our reaching for higher levels. One never is holy. One can only aspire to be holier. At tonight’s dinner we recognize the completion of another kind of service. Merav and Yonatan Edrei bring to a close their Bnei Akiva shelichut. After four years, this couple has made a lasting impression upon our community and most notably upon the youth and in particular the youth of our school. Merav was imbedded in the school as a full-time Ivrit teacher and Yonatan was a regular presence at FHDS. They did so much to advance the ideals of Bnei Akiva - Torah v’Avodah, Aliyah, and the centrality of Israel in the lives of Jews both residing in the State and in the Diaspora. All of us at Farber Hebrew Day School will miss them terribly. We thank them for all they have done for us. We wish Merav and Yonatan and their wonderful children Dovid, Aviad, and, with God’s help, a new little Edrei, b’sha-a tova, the best of luck in all their future endeavors. B’hatzlacha Rabba.

The Yeshivat Akiva endowment fund was established to enhance Farber’s educational program and provide scholarship assistance to families in need. This is a permanent fund, and earnings generated from endowment fund investments provide perpetual support for Farber Hebrew Day School - Yeshivat Akiva. Resources flow into the endowment from direct contributions and from tributes which may be directed either to the general endowment or to specific, named funds. The tribute program is administered by the school’s office. Tributes may be used to commemorate any occasion, and all tributes are acknowledged to both the sender and the recipient.
