17 THE NAUTILUS SWIMMING NEWS SWIMMING CARNIVAL ON 14 SEPTEMBER 2014

Time fl ew by so fast! The much anticipated PSC Annual Swimming Carnival was here again. As early as 7am, participants began to pour in, and the excitement started to mount.

The Club Captain Mr Manfred Weidenmaier whistled off the fi rst participant of the biathlon. Soon, you could see swimmers of all ages, swimming in their own preferred style, trying to fi nish 4 laps in the pool. Once out of the pool, they ran down till the end of the beach next to the Club. Some sprinted, while others jogged; some smiled, while others frowned. When they reached the fi nishing line, they sighed as if they had taken a heavy load off their chest.

After a short break, participants were called up to group into their pre-assigned teams to start the fi rst fun game, “Hula Hoop Thru”. Ten team members lined up next to each other holding each other’s hand. Upon hearing the whistle, the hula hoop could be seen waving through the human chain to and fro. Some were able to maneuver the hula hoop skillfully; some clumsily stuck it on their shoulders or in between their legs.

The following “Boats N Balls” game pitted 4 teams in one round. Two youngest participants in each team were seated in a boat while eight others directed the boat to collect as many balls into the boat as possible. Some were smart to corner the balls to prevent them from fl oating away and harvested a full boat of balls.

18 THE NAUTILUS SWIMMING NEWS

Then, “Ping Pong Quiz” game tested the participants’ general knowledge and swimming skill. Nine questions, among them Disney movie characters, second highest mountain in the world and Incheon Asian Game mascot were read out. Participants dived in to fi nd the answer written on the ping pong balls in the the pool, then swam towards the other end of the pool to put it into an egg tray.

After a short break, a banana boat was seen carried into the middle of the pool. Participants’ opened their eyes widely, eagerly waiting for something new and exciting.

Upon the whistle, 10 participants dived into the pool and swam towards the banana boat. They tried to climb up the slippery boat. It was more diffi cult than you could imagine. Some slipped and fell into the water. Some grabbed onto the seat holder and managed to scramble up. Awkward falls and funny scenes abound. Everyone burst out in a roar of laughter. Participants’ faces glowed with excitement.

Later, fi ve winners were chosen for the “Set place” game where participants tried to guess 5 locations that were randomly picked.

The last event was the highlight of the day, “The Treasure Hunt”. The whole pool was fi lled with canned food, canned drinks and oranges. Participants armed with one plastic bag, dived in and hunted for the treasures. Before you knew it, the pool was sparkling clean.

The event adjourned to 14th fl oor. Winners were announced and prizes were given away. The event culminated with a lucky draw that drew all the kids to the stage, eagerly hoping for their number to be announced. The atmosphere was like that of a big family gathering. Last but not least, a big thanks to the sponsors Madwave, Arena for sponsoring the prizes and lucky draws, and Pacifi c West Foods for sponsoring us the delicious sorbet.

DANCESPORT NEWS INTER ASIA LINE DANCING

This is yet another great event organized by our dancers – the line dancers. On 24 October 2014, PSC played host to dancers from Country Line Dance Association from Singapore, and Ildi Binjal Medan, Indonesia with an Inter-Asia Line Dancing event held at the MPH.

The theme for the evening was Halloween, but the highly enthusiastic dancers weren’t taken aback by any ghost. You could feel the energy coming from more than a hundred dancers. After dinner and a short address by our club president, the dancers took to the fl oor. That was one hard core dance sport! It was non-stop music with dancers from all three countries dancing in harmony. The participation by the Singaporeans and Indonesians had added more variety and character to the evening, which greatly enriched the wholesome experience. The music never stopped, and so the ‘marathon’ dancing went on and on throughout the evening. We cannot deny the sport had done a whole lot to promote international understanding and goodwill.

VISIT FROM ROYAL SELANGOR CLUB

As a tribute to the late Li Hsiang Lan, Bai Guang and Wu Ying Ying, some of their fans headed by Siew Lee and Amy Ham performed songs made famous by the trio, on 5 October2014. It was a night of nostalgia for their fans. However the session ended when our guests from Kuala Lumpur were ushered into the Lounge.

Despite a very short notice, the Karaoke Chairman and committee members managed to make it a fun evening to welcome 22 Karaoke members from the Royal Selangor Club. After dinner at the Captain’s Restaurant everyone eagerly walked to the Pacifi c Lounge to belt out their favorite songs. The guests were very impressed with the club and enjoyed the evening and hospitality. A memento was presented to our Chairman by their Convenor before the evening ended.

We will defi nitely make a reciprocal visit to their club in the near future. Another affi liated club we are planning to visit is the Ipoh Swimming Club befor the year ends. 27 THE NAUTILUS

MEMBERS FIRST HALF YEARLY DART COMPETITION

“A” TEAM DARTERS IN COMFORTABLE VICTORY AGAINST T.N.C

“A” Team Darters overcame the early loss in the opening Foursome to achieve a straightforward win against TNC (Taiping New Club), on the afternoon of Sunday, 7 September 2014.

The Foursome may have produced some kind on record. With PSC on a 40 checkout, and TNC trailing by approximately 400 points, our darters contrived to, eventually, hand the point to TNC.

Raucous cheering from TNC……much headshaking from PSC. Foursome…..not our strongest format.

However, the initial shock seemed to stir our Team into positive action. The ever reliable Michelle and Kong won their Singles matches (2 - 1 and 2 – 0 respectively), establishing a PSC 4 - 2 lead, as a break was taken for High Tea. After refreshments, the initial Doubles partnership of Tony & Quah, a pairing that alternates The Club held its fi rst Half Yearly Members Darts between devastating and disastrous, proved the latter, losing 0 – Competition, of the 2014-15 Season, on Sunday, 2, and thus enabling TNC to level the scores. 24 August 2014.

After our trip to Royal Kedah Club in November 2013, we were looking forward to their visit to our club this year. So on 12 July 2014, a total of 7 men and 2 ladies traveled to our club to continue the matches that were left off last year due to rain interruption. With a nice and sunny weather, a total of 9 matches were played which consist of 5 men doubles and 4 mixed doubles.

Although our combination scored most of the points but there were defi nitely a couple of hard fought matches that were able to thrill the spectators around the courts. After all the fun at the courts, the evening continued with dinner at The Captain's Restaurant.
