In this note we introduce the class of H-groups (or Hall groups) related to the class of B-groups defined by P. Hall in the 1950s. Establishing some basic properties of Hall groups we use them to obtain results concerning embeddings of abelian groups. In particular, we give an explicit classification of all abelian groups that can occur as subgroups in finitely generated metabelian groups. Hall groups allow us to give a negative answer to G. Baumslag’s conjecture of 1990 on the cardinality of the set of isomorphism classes for abelian subgroups in finitely generated metabelian groups. 1 Introduction The subject of our note goes back to the paper of P. Hall [7], which established the properties of abelian normal subgroups in finitely generated metabelian and abelian-by-polycyclic groups. Let B be the class of all abelian groups B, where B is an abelian normal subgroup of some finitely generated group G with polycyclic quotient G=B. It is proved in [7, Lemmas 8 and 5.2] that B H, where the class H of countable abelian groups can be defined as follows (in the present paper, we will call the groups from H Hall groups). By definition, H H if 2 (1) H is a (finite or) countable abelian group, (2) H T K; where T is a bounded torsion group (i.e., the orders of all ele- D ˚ ments in T are bounded), K is torsion-free, (3) K has a free abelian subgroup F such that K=F is a torsion group with trivial p-subgroups for all primes except for the members of a finite set .K/. -

We first summarize very briefly the topology of 3-manifolds and the approach of Thurston towards their geometrization. After dis- cussing some general properties of curvature functionals on the space of metrics, we formulate and discuss three conjectures that imply Thurston’s Geometrization Conjecture for closed oriented 3-manifolds. The final two sections present evidence for the validity of these conjectures and outline an approach toward their proof. Introduction In the late seventies and early eighties Thurston proved a number of very re- markable results on the existence of geometric structures on 3-manifolds. These results provide strong support for the profound conjecture, formulated by Thur- ston, that every compact 3-manifold admits a canonical decomposition into do- mains, each of which has a canonical geometric structure. For simplicity, we state the conjecture only for closed, oriented 3-manifolds. Geometrization Conjecture [Thurston 1982]. Let M be a closed , oriented, 2 prime 3-manifold. Then there is a finite collection of disjoint, embedded tori Ti 2 in M, such that each component of the complement M r Ti admits a geometric structure, i.e., a complete, locally homogeneous RiemannianS metric. A more detailed description of the conjecture and the terminology will be given in Section 1. A complete Riemannian manifold N is locally homogeneous if the universal cover N˜ is a complete homogenous manifold, that is, if the isometry group Isom N˜ acts transitively on N˜. It follows that N is isometric to N=˜ Γ, where Γ is a discrete subgroup of Isom N˜, which acts freely and properly discontinuously on N˜. -

This means cancelling as much as we can, and replacing strings of a’s by the corresponding power. Thus w = aaa −1 aaa = aaaa = a 4 = w0 ; where equality means up to reduction. Thus the free group on one generator is isomorphic to Z. The free group on two generators is much more complicated and it is not abelian. -

Finitely Generated Groups Are Universal Matthew Harrison-Trainor Meng-Che Ho December 1, 2017 Abstract Universality has been an important concept in computable structure theory. A class C of structures is universal if, informally, for any structure, of any kind, there is a structure in C with the same computability-theoretic properties as the given structure. Many classes such as graphs, groups, and fields are known to be universal. This paper is about the class of finitely generated groups. Because finitely generated structures are relatively simple, the class of finitely generated groups has no hope of being universal. We show that finitely generated groups are as universal as possible, given that they are finitely generated: for every finitely generated structure, there is a finitely generated group which has the same computability-theoretic properties. The same is not true for finitely generated fields. We apply the results of this investigation to quasi Scott sentences. 1 Introduction Whenever we have a structure with interesting computability-theoretic properties, it is natural to ask whether such examples can be found within particular classes. While one could try to adapt the proof within the new class, it is often simpler to try and code the original structure into a structure in the given class. It has long been known that for certain classes, such as graphs, this is always possible. Hirschfeldt, Khoussainov, Shore, and Slinko [HKSS02] proved that classes of graphs, partial orderings, lattices, integral domains, and 2-step nilpotent groups are \complete with respect to degree spectra of nontrivial structures, effective dimensions, expansion by constants, and degree spectra of relations". -

Let a semigroup A be given by generators ai, a2, . , ad and defining relations U\ — V\yu2 = v2, ... , ue = ve between these generators, the uu vt being words in the generators. We then have a presentation of A, and write A = sgp(ai, . , ad, «i = vu . , ue = ve). The same generators with the same relations can also be interpreted as the presentation of a group, for which we write A* = gpOi, . , ad\ «i = vu . , ue = ve). There is a unique homomorphism <£: A—* A* which maps each generator at G A on the same generator at G 4*. We generalize the classical knapsack and subset sum problems to arbitrary groups and study the computational complexity of these new problems. We show that these problems, as well as the bounded submonoid membership problem, are P-time decidable in hyperbolic groups and give var- ious examples of finitely presented groups where the subset sum problem is NP-complete. 1. Introduction 1.1. Motivation. This is the first in a series of papers on non-commutative discrete (combinatorial) optimization. In this series we propose to study complexity of the classical discrete optimization (DO) problems in their most general form — in non- commutative groups. For example, DO problems concerning integers (subset sum, knapsack problem, etc.) make perfect sense when the group of additive integers is replaced by an arbitrary (non-commutative) group G. The classical lattice problems are about subgroups (integer lattices) of the additive groups Zn or Qn, their non- commutative versions deal with arbitrary finitely generated subgroups of a group G. The travelling salesman problem or the Steiner tree problem make sense for arbitrary finite subsets of vertices in a given Cayley graph of a non-commutative infinite group (with the natural graph metric). The Post correspondence problem carries over in a straightforward fashion from a free monoid to an arbitrary group. This list of examples can be easily extended, but the point here is that many classical DO problems have natural and interesting non-commutative versions. -
Abstract Quotients of Profinite Groups, After Nikolov and Segal
ABSTRACT QUOTIENTS OF PROFINITE GROUPS, AFTER NIKOLOV AND SEGAL BENJAMIN KLOPSCH Abstract. In this expanded account of a talk given at the Oberwolfach Ar- beitsgemeinschaft “Totally Disconnected Groups”, October 2014, we discuss results of Nikolay Nikolov and Dan Segal on abstract quotients of compact Hausdorff topological groups, paying special attention to the class of finitely generated profinite groups. Our primary source is [17]. Sidestepping all difficult and technical proofs, we present a selection of accessible arguments to illuminate key ideas in the subject. 1. Introduction §1.1. Many concepts and techniques in the theory of finite groups depend in- trinsically on the assumption that the groups considered are a priori finite. The theoretical framework based on such methods has led to marvellous achievements, including – as a particular highlight – the classification of all finite simple groups. Notwithstanding, the same methods are only of limited use in the study of infinite groups: it remains mysterious how one could possibly pin down the structure of a general infinite group in a systematic way. Significantly more can be said if such a group comes equipped with additional information, such as a structure-preserving action on a notable geometric object. A coherent approach to studying restricted classes of infinite groups is found by imposing suitable ‘finiteness conditions’, i.e., conditions that generalise the notion of being finite but are significantly more flexible, such as the group being finitely generated or compact with respect to a natural topology. One rather fruitful theme, fusing methods from finite and infinite group theory, consists in studying the interplay between an infinite group Γ and the collection of all its finite quotients. -
