SURVEY OF COLONIAL RECOVERED IN SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY (PART III)

(Wayne H. Shelby)

INTRODUCTION

After the publication of my first two articles in the C4 Newsletter titled “SURVEY OF COLONIAL COINS RECOVERED IN SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY” (Winter-2003, Volume 11, Number 4) and “SURVEY OF COLONIAL COINS RECOVERED IN SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY PART II” (Summer- 2005, Volume 13, Number 2), I have recovered and documented a number of additional finds from the Burlington County and Southern New Jersey area. I believe the additional recoveries and the inclusion of tables 10 thru 15 will provide a more in-depth picture of type use and availability during colonial and early American times.

Most additional finds are the result of my locating new metal detecting sites (72 thru 90). However, some finds are the result of my continued effort metal detecting at my former sites numbered (1 thru 71). Many Additional single finds have been documented by township and/or county since 2005 and are listed accordingly.

Table #2 was revised by further breaking down the less commonly used foreign coins and those heavily corroded and/or worn by type, denomination and ruler. This was accomplished by a thorough re-examination of my collection using various reference books as a guide. I was also able to specifically identify a number of pieces previously listed in my first two publications.

In sites numbered 1 thru 56, I give the total number of coins found, and then provide a listing of the more important and identifiable ones. The less important coins are those without a discernable date or ones identifiable only to generic or metal type will later appear in Table #2 “Summary of total coins dug in Southern New Jersey”.

With the additions of sites numbered 57 thru 90, I recorded all coins found at that particular location including those identifiable only to generic or metal type.

Sites numbered 1 thru 90 account for a total of 1,079 coins attributed to type, date, country of origin and/or ruler. In addition to this amount there are 185 coins that are so deteriorated from their years in the ground that specific attribution was impossible, they are no more than blank metal discs.

Since autumn of 2005 I have kept records of my Single coin recoveries (56) from various locations by township and/or county throughout the Southern New Jersey area, this listing provides documentation of sort to those coins which would otherwise not have and marked xx or by county in the Survey. These recoveries can be found in Table 2A which reveals a total of 56 coins, including 5 coins deteriorated beyond recognition and are no more than blank metal discs.

As a guide, the following tables provide a quick overview of the survey’s structure:

TABLE 1: DATES OF REIGN FOR FOREIGN RULERS Even though their date cannot be deciphered, some of the found coins can be identified when only the country and/or ruler are visible. Helpful reference material is provided in Table 1, which correlates country, monarch and their respective dates.

TABLE 2: SUMMARY OF 1325 COIN RECOVERIES FROM SOUTHERN NJ. This table provides a complete list of the1325 coins I have recovered in the Burlington County and Southern New Jersey area. It is inclusive of the 1079 coins found at the 90 sites described above in addition to another 56 single coin finds from other locations throughout the Southern New Jersey area and documented to township and/or county. Within all the finds are 185 absolute unknowns bear no clues as to what they might have been.

TABLE 2A: POST 2005 SINGLE COIN RECOVERIES DOCUMENTED BY TOWNSHIP AND/OR COUNTY

TABLE 3: THE SURVEY WITH CONDENSED CATEGORIES This table summarizes the 1325 coins by general type. Note that 185 coins could not be identified other than to metal type - they were in effect “metal disks.”

TABLE 4: SPANISH AMERICA/SPAIN BY MARK In this table, I have provided a listing of Spanish and Spanish Colonial silver coins that had enough detail to identify as to date and mint. For coins found in one of the 90 sites, the number of the site is listed; those recovered from an unspecified location are indicated with an “xx or county.” Single coin recoveries are listed by township and/or county.

In the following discussion of the 90 sites, it should be addressed: “Spanish” is taken to mean Spanish-American, except in a few cases which are indicated by “Spanish (mint),” which are pistareens or their fractional parts from mainland Spain.

TABLE 5: COLONIAL AMERICA COINS BY VARIETY In this table I have provided a listing of Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, Machin’s ’s and Fugio coins with enough detail to identify by variety. For coins found in one of the 90 sites, the number of the site is listed; those recovered from an unspecified Southern New Jersey area are indicated with “xx or county”.

TABLE 6: ACCOUNT OF CUT COINS This table provides a listing of the cut fractional portion of the coin recovered by country of origin, type, composition and /or date when enough detail remains to do so. For coins found in one of the documented sites, the number of the site is listed; those recovered from an unspecified site are indicated with “xx or county”. Single coin recoveries are listed by township and/or county.

TABLE 7: ACCOUNT OF HOLED COINS AND/OR ATTEMPTED HOLING This table provides a listing of the coins altered by holes or attempted holing by country of origin, type, and composition and/or date when enough detail remains to do so. Further details provide the general location of their occurrence and shape.

©2020 C4 2

TABLE 8: ACCOUNT OF COUNTERMARKED COINS This table provides a complete listing of my various countermarked coins by country of origin, type, composition and/or date when enough detail remains to do so.

TABLE 9: ACCOUNT OF CONTEMPORARY COUNTERFEIT COINS This table provides a listing of the identifiable counterfeit coins by country of origin, type, composition and/or date when enough details remain to do so.

An accurate accounting is not possible because a large majority of coins documented in the survey are made of . These coins exhibit various stages of corrosion and or deterioration due to their years of being exposed to the elements and various ground conditions.

Some dug coins may retain the most intricate details to provide us with specific attribution while others are so badly deteriorated only the generic type or metal composition is identifiable. Therefore, I believe the actual percentage of the counterfeit coins to be much higher than documented in my survey.

TABLE 10: IDENTIFIABLE CONTEMPORARY COUNTERFEIT ENGLISH GEORGE III HALFPENNIES BY FAMILY, TYPE

TABLE 11: IDENTIFIABLE US HALF CENT VARIETIES BY COHEN NUMBER

TABLE 12: IDENTIFIABLE US VARIETIES BY SHELDON NUMBER TABLE 13: IDENTIFIABLE MILITARY, STATE & POLITICAL BUTTONS BY ALBERT’S NUMBER

TABLE 14: SPECIAL INTEREST COINS AND ARTIFACTS This table provides a listing of a few larger denomination coins which appear to have been hidden and evidently lost or forgotten, possibly due to devastation of a structure by fire.

Other special interest items are some early American which appear to have been targeted by vandalism. By listing various scale/coin weights thru their markings may possibly reveal our early buying and trading habits.

TABLE 15: PRESENT STATUS OF SITES #1 THRU #90 This table reveals which sites are presently intact verses destroyed by modern progress that includes construction of homes, condominiums, commercial properties, warehouses, recreational grounds etc.

I am also reporting other notable artifacts found to provide better insight as to the actual age of these locations. To identify by number the various military buttons found at these sites use Record of American Uniform and Historical Buttons Bicentennial Edition 1 by Alphaeus H. Albert.

The following is a useful guide to the reader for the approximate dates of the various button types:

Doublet: c. Pre-1700 Vent Back: c.1700-1765 Spun Back / Tombac: c.1740-1795 Brass / No Back Marks: c.1740-1795 1-Piece Back Marked: c.1795-1840 2-piece Back Marked: c. Post 1840

The following is a useful guide to the reader for the percentages associated with the general quantity terms:

GENERAL QUANTITY TERMS: Occasional 1 to 5% Few 10% or less Some 11 to 25% Many 26 to 45% Approximately ½ 46 to 54% Most or Mostly 55 to 89% Generally 90% or more Practically all 96% or more

Compliments of most quantity terms are necessary. A compliment is defined as one of two mutually competing parts. The terms occasional, few, some, many, approximately ½ and most require compliments of some kind to account for the entire 100%.

Each of my documented site numbers 1 thru 90 gives a listing of artifacts found at that particular site. By listing the approximate number of buttons found, the types recovered and by applying the general quantity terms to the types found, we are able to decipher an approximate time range the site was inhabited.

Other metal artifacts found commonly but not reported consistently throughout my listed sites include musket balls, thimbles, drawer pulls, watch top winders, lead seals, complete or parts of shoe buckles, belt buckles, knee buckles and utensils. Some of the dug buttons and cuff links show ornate designs of various patterns; others commonly exhibit animals, plants or flowers.

CONCLUSION

This survey has provided information from numerous metal detecting sites and locations I have discovered over the past 34 years in hope of giving an accurate perspective of the typical coins used in this region during colonial and early America.

Most of these sites once contained homes or were areas supporting work or other activities and most remained undisturbed until my initial findings.

The coins that I have found represent those which were carried for everyday transactions and were dropped at these sites during everyday activities. Larger denominations of silver and gold probably were not carried on their person very often, or even used by common folk at all.

There are 636 foreign, colonial and confederation coins recovered and documented in the survey. The following percentages by majority reveal the most commonly circulated pieces by country of origin.

Country of origin Total Coins/Percentage English coins 305 48% Spanish America/Spain coins 117 18% Colonial America coins 95 15% Irish coins 75 11% French coins 16 3% Portuguese coins 10 2% Other world coins 18 3%

Recapping my evaluation of the coinage from England, Ireland, Spanish America and Spain revealed the following important information regarding the circulation patterns and or availability of certain coin types and denominations.

Recovered: 305 English coins: (Account of halfpennies & farthings) 302 total 260 halfpennies or 86% 42 farthings or 14%

Included in the figures above are a number of documented and non-attributable counterfeit halfpennies and farthings. No exact figure can be given since corrosion has played a major roll to their present condition. “No Charles II halfpennies were attributable in the survey”. “No Regal George III halfpennies or farthings were attributable in the survey”.

Recovered: 75 Irish coins: (Account of halfpennies & farthings) 71 total 67 halfpennies or 94%, 4 farthings or 6%

Non-attributable counterfeit Irish halfpennies may exist but are not identifiable due to corrosion.

Recovered: 117 Spanish America/Spain coins: (Account of silver bust type, pillar type, pistareens and cobs) 114 total 97 bust type or 85% 8 pillar type or 7% 5 pistareen type or 4% ©2020 C4 67

4 cobs or 4%

Included in the figures above are 10 counterfeit bust 8 reals and 1 counterfeit cob.

Most of the circulating English, Irish and Spanish America coinage listed above can be narrowed down to 3 basic types and/or denominations which are as follows:

English halfpennies Irish halfpennies Spanish America Bust silver

These 3 basic types and/or denominations alone account for 424 pieces out of the 636 colonial, foreign and pre-federal coins listed in the survey or 66.6%.

COLONIAL AMERICAN COIN CIRCULATION:

Recovered: 58 Colonial American, Confederation & Pre-Federal coins: 1 Massachusetts Pine Tree shilling 58 New Jersey coppers 12 Connecticut coppers, including 3 Vermont coppers 2 William Pitt halfpenny tokens 5 Machin's Mills coppers 1 Georgius Triumpho copper 5 Virginia coppers 6 Nova Constellatio coppers 2 Fugio coppers

TOTAL: 58 pieces above divided by 636 foreign and pre-US Mint coins = 9.1%

58 pieces above divided by 589 foreign coins dated before 1793 plus pre-US Mint coins = 9.8%. I believe this figure is slightly on the light side since some of the coins inspected were too worn or corroded to make a positive attribution.

58 pieces above divided by 1,325 coins in the Survey up to and including the year 1857 = 4.3%.

With this configuration It almost appears our colonial American coin circulation dropped after the US Mint began operations in 1793 thru 1857. However, one must consider that foreign coin use in America was permitted until 1857 thereby initiating a continued use of the coins originally sent here. In addition, more foreign coins flowed into the country thru trade for many years after the opening of our US Mint since we could not produce enough coinage to satisfy the demand.

I have noticed a rather large portion of the recovered bust Spanish American silver dated prior to 1793 circulated consistently with the US Mint large cents including those as late as the Coronet and Braided Hair type.

With this thought in mind, it appears that some to most of our colonial American coin use continued until they were very heavily worn, lost or simply set aside.

It is interesting to note Tables 6, 7, and 8 reveal a considerable portion of our circulating coinage (82 coins out of 1,325 or 6%) were either cut, holed, attempted to be holed or countermarked. These physical alterations were apparently common place in the pockets of our colonial and early American ancestors.

Cut coins: 31 2.3% Holed coins and/or attempted holing 43 3.2% Countermarked coins 8 0.6% TOTAL: 82 6.1%

Ending Reminder

This Survey provides an accurate picture of the smaller denomination coinage used in the Southern New Jersey area in Colonial Confederation and Early American times. These figures, percentages and types of coins will most likely differ from the various east coast colonies and larger cities of the time.

A big thank you to Will Nipper, Jack Howes and Craig McDonald for their help with editing, ideas and finding the perfect home for publication of this article.
