NOVEMBER 2019 DEN GRÅ HAL To af de største navne inden for moderne West Coast hip-hop, YG & Ty Dolla $ign, indtager Den Grå Hal med et fælles show. YG har med sin kraftigfulde og lidt hæse stemme, der passer perfekt til de tunge beats som de fleste af hans sange er lavet på, opnået kommerciel succes op igennem 2010’erne. Den ”brazy” West Coast rapper fik sit gennembrud med den Ty Dolla $ign-assisterede ”player”-hymne ’Toot It And Boot It’ fra 2010. Sidenhen har han vedligeholdt succesen med top 10- albummerne My Krazy Life (2014), Still Brazy (2016) og Stay Dangerous (2018), som blev efterfulgt af 4REAL 4REAL (2019). På de fire albummer finder man publikumsfavoritterne ’My N*gga’, ’Who Do You Love?’ og ’Big Bank’, der alle er gået platin. Derudover fik YG stor mediebevågenhed da han under Donald Trumps valgkampagne udgav det Trump kritiske nummer ’FDT’ (feat. Nipsey Hussle). Ty Dolla $ign laver, i følge ham selv ikke numre man kan elske til - han laver numre man kan kneppe til. Han skiller sig ud fra andre R&B-sangere med sin karakteristiske hæse og soulede stemme. Ty Dollas karriere tog for alvor fart med det DJ Mustard-producerede hit ‘Paranoid’ fra 2013 der fik en dobbelt platincertificering. Sidenhen har han cementeret sin plads som et af de største R&B navne ved selv at udgive en lang række hits, både i eget navn, og som en af de mest efterspurgte feature-artister på den amerikanske musikscene. Hvor han bl.a. har arbejdet sammen med Kanye West, Khalid, The Weeknd, J. Cole, Wiz Khalifa og selvfølgelig YG, som har han har haft et tæt venskab med siden de begge brød ind på scenen sammen. Senest har han været aktuel med collab-albummet med Jeremih ’MIH-TY’ og ’Beach House 3’ fra 2018. Da størstedelen af den amerikanske hip-hop-scene kiggede mod sydstaterne for at finde inspiration var YG & Ty Dolla $ign tro mod deres LA-rødder og genopfandt en sound som mange havde dømt ude. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

    Metric Ambiguity and Flow in Rap Music: A Corpus-Assisted Study of Outkast’s “Mainstream” (1996) MITCHELL OHRINER[1] University of Denver ABSTRACT: Recent years have seen the rise of musical corpus studies, primarily detailing harmonic tendencies of tonal music. This article extends this scholarship by addressing a new genre (rap music) and a new parameter of focus (rhythm). More specifically, I use corpus methods to investigate the relation between metric ambivalence in the instrumental parts of a rap track (i.e., the beat) and an emcee’s rap delivery (i.e., the flow). Unlike virtually every other rap track, the instrumental tracks of Outkast’s “Mainstream” (1996) simultaneously afford hearing both a four-beat and a three-beat metric cycle. Because three-beat durations between rhymes, phrase endings, and reiterated rhythmic patterns are rare in rap music, an abundance of them within a verse of “Mainstream” suggests that an emcee highlights the three-beat cycle, especially if that emcee is not prone to such durations more generally. Through the construction of three corpora, one representative of the genre as a whole, and two that are artist specific, I show how the emcee T-Mo Goodie’s expressive practice highlights the rare three-beat affordances of the track.
