Aug 27, 2013 22:03 BST Nokia’s Stephen Elop to replace Steve Ballmer as Microsoft CEO?
According to a new rumour, Nokia’s Stephen Elop, the Finnish firm’s CEO who brokered the deal that had Nokia focus on Windows Phone smartphones such as the Lumia 925, is the top pick to replace Steve Ballmer as software giant Microsoft’s CEO.
This is according to the Sunday Times of London. The newspaper reports, “THE boss of Nokia has been tipped as one of the favourites to run Microsoft after Steve Ballmer announced his departure from the technology giant.
“Stephen Elop, who managed Microsoft Office before becoming chief executive of Nokia, is a strong candidate to succeed Ballmer, who revealed his retirement on Friday.”
Although Elop is the Redmond firm’s top pick, he is not the software giant’s only candidate. Other candidates include Tony Bates, manager at Skype, Paul Maritz, former VMware CEO, and Bill Gates, billionaire and Microsoft co- founder. The newspaper, however, notes that it’s unlikely that Gates will sit as CEO of Microsoft once more.
