Overseas Expert Column by Naohiro Goda This year’s field of the G1 Mile Championship has quality and depth, as the best milers of 3YOs, 4YOs and 5YOs are getting together. GRAN ALEGRIA has been regarded very highly by her connection since she was a 2YO, for example, she skipped the G1 Hanshin Juvenile Fillies and ran against colts in the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes instead, although she was beaten third to ADMIRE MARS there. Four months later, the filly by DEEP IMPACT won the G1 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas), first leg of the Triple Tiara for 3YO fillies, and met the high expectation. And it is amazing that she continued to evolve and what she has achieved so far this season is more than the high expectation. GRAN ALEGRIA won the G1 Yasuda Kinen, championship race for milers during the first half of the season, beating ALMOND EYE, one of the best female athletes in the world, and she displayed more impressive performance in the G1 Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama on 4th October. She was almost the last to enter the homestretch and used unbelievable turn of foot to win by two lengths. It is one of the greatest “come-from-behind” performances. While Mile Championship is usually taken place at Kyoto Racecourse, it is transferred to Hanshin this year, as Kyoto is closed for renovation, and it helps GRAN ALEGRIA, because there is a longer homestretch at Hanshin than at Kyoto, her late kick works better. GRAN ALEGRIA is my favourite. As well as GRAN ALEGRIA, ADMIRE MARS has captured three G1s so far, as he won the G1 NHK Mile Cup and the G1 Hong Kong Mile last season, in addition to the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes in 2018 over the same course and distance as Mile Championship. He has run only twice this year, and one of them is the G2 Swan Stakes at Kyoto on 31st October, when he finished third. I think he performed quite well, because he is the horse who needs a race to gain 100% fitness, and I am pretty sure he runs much better on Sunday than his previous start. ADMIRE MARS is my second choice. There are three 3YOs who won G1 races over 1,600m in the field and the most interesting runner among them is SALIOS, winner of the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes in 2019. He was runner-up to CONTRAIL in the G1 Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) and the G1 Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), first and second leg of the Triple Crown in spring, and won the G2 Mainichi Okan at Tokyo on 11th October by three lengths beating older horses, although the standard of the competitors were not so high. I reckon he has the ability to finish within first three in this quality field. INDY CHAMP, winner of the G1 Yasuda Kinen and the G1 Mile Championship in 2019, failed to achieve a back-to-back win in this year’s Yasuda Kinen in June, when he finished third, and has not run since then. As like ADMIRE MARS, INDY CHAMP needs a race to gain 100% fitness. Although he is a good miler, I cannot assess him better than fourth choice. LAUDA SION, winner of the G1 NHK Mile Cup in May, finished second in the G2 Fuji Stakes at Tokyo on 24th October, competing against older horses, and I think it is a good prep for this race. LAUDA SION is my fifth choice. SELECTIONS: 4. GRAN ALEGRIA, 7. ADMIRE MARS, 17. SALIOS, 8. INDY CHAMP & 6. LAUDA SION -2- HK Time 2:40 P.M. S2-1 Mile Championship JPN Time 3:40 P.M. FROM: Junichi Takada General Manager, Media & Publicity Department, THE JAPAN RACING ASSOCIATION (JRA) DATE: June 7, 2020 SUBJECT: RESULT OF THE 70TH YASUDA KINEN (G1) The Yasuda Kinen, a race to determine the best miler of the spring season, has welcomed just over 50 foreign- trained horses since its designation as an international race in 1993, including 1995 champion Heart Lake (GB, by Nureyev) from the UAE, 2000 winner Fairy King Prawn (AUS, by Danehill) from Hong Kong and the winner of the 2006 Champions Mile-Yasuda Kinen double, Bullish Luck (USA, by Royal Academy). Past Yasuda Kinen winners that have subsequently become the season’s Horse of the Year include Oguri Cap (JPN, by Dancing Cap; ’90), Taiki Shuttle (USA, by Devil’s Bag; ’98), Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet; ’08 &’09), Lord Kanaloa (JPN, by King Kamehameha; ’13) and Maurice (JPN, by Screen Hero; ’15). The race joined the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series in 2016, enabling its winners to earn automatic starting position in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1, 1,600m), while the first three finishers of this race are eligible to start in the French G1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1,600m) since 2017. This year’s Yasuda Kinen was the first start for Admire Mars, Mr Melody and Persian Knight—respective winners of the Hong Kong Mile (G1, 1,600m), the 2019 Takamatsunomiya Kinen (G1, 1,200m) and the 2017 Mile Championship (G1, 1,600m)—since returning from the UAE where the Dubai World Cup meeting was cancelled due to COVID-19. Defending champion and 2019 Best Sprinter or Miler Indy Champ came off a comfortable victory in the Milers Cup (G2, 1,600m; Apr.26) with Vin de Garde following in third.

We drew blood on him [Sunday] morning and his white cell counts were a little high. We just can=t run him on Saturday with being a little off his game.@ The defection of the GI Arkansas Derby runner-up will allow GII Remsen S. winner Brooklyn Strong (Wicked Strong) to enter the Derby field. The Mark Schwartz colorbearer, most recently fifth in the Apr. 3 GII Wood Memorial, is scheduled to work at Parx Monday morning for trainer Daniel Velazquez and could ship into Churchill Downs Tuesday morning if all goes well. • Gordon's Tonic in Freelance Venture
MONDAY, 25 MARCH 2019 GORDON'S TONIC IN SCAT DADDY COLT DELIVERS WINNING NUMBER AT CHUKYO by Heather Anderson FREELANCE VENTURE Green Fields= Mr Melody (Scat Daddy) was testing Group 1 waters for only the second time in Chukyo=s Takamatsunomiya Kinen, and came through with a half-length victory over Seiun Kosei (Jpn) (Admire Moon {Jpn}) in the 1200-metre feature. The dark bay raced in between horses just behind the first flight in fourth and saved ground entering the lone turn. In tight quarters, the 6-1 third choice shifted out a path and edged toward the front inside the final 300 metres, before grinding past a stubborn Seiun Kosei to his outside and holding off the belated rally of Shonan Anthem (Jpn) (Jungle Pocket {Jpn}) up the inside. Seiun Kosei was a head to the good of the latter, with favoured Danon Smash (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) another half- length away in fourth.
