Sustrans Tour de Swindon Self-Led Treasure Hunt!

Sustrans have set out some geocaches around Peatmoor lagoon and National Cycle Route 45. It is part of the Sustrans 2014 Tour de Swindon programme of events. These geocaches are not too tricky and have been placed just off the cycle paths and footpaths for families to enjoy. We have tried to trim any brambles or nettles, but do be careful and we advise that gloves may be appropriate.

We have also included other nearby geocaches placed by others for you to enjoy. This is a self-led treasure trail, so please take the time to read the advice overleaf. The treasure hunt can take 45minutes to two hours, depending on how long you want to spend on it. You don’t have to do everything today, you can always come back another day to find the geocaches. Once you’ve finished, you can head home!

What is geocaching? Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

How to get started If you have a geocaching app on your phone you can look up the GC##### number on it, or you can use the satellite image to zoom in to a location, put in co-ordinates into your phone such as google (or even your car sat nav), or just use a paper ! If you have GPS, use it to assist you in finding the hidden geocache. Once you have found the cache, sign the logbook and return the geocache to its original location.

What are the rules of geocaching? 1. If you take something from the geocache (or "cache"), leave something of equal or greater value. 2. Write about your find in the cache logbook. 3. Log your experience at www.geocaching.com

How do I find the cache and what should I do once I've found it? There are many things to know about searching for a cache. For instance, did you know that there is a slight "error" to every GPS device due to technological limitations? Your device can get you close to the cache, but there are a number of things to consider as you get closer to the cache location. Find out more on the Geocaching website: www.geocaching.com/about/finding.aspx When you find the cache, sign the logbook and return it to the cache. You can take an item from the cache if you like - just make sure to leave something of equal or greater value in its place. When you are finished, put the cache back exactly as you found it, even if you think you see a better spot for it. Finally, visit the geocaching website to log your find and share your experience with others.
