SUG 2018; 15 (2-3): 283-296 Kommentar/Commentary Danyel Reiche* Issues around the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia: A showcase of how sports and politics mix Wie die FIFA Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2018 in Russland exemplarisch belegt, dass Sport und Politik nicht voneinander zu trennen sind DOI 10.1515/sug-2018-0013 Summery: The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia was another demonstration in how sports and politics mix. In protest of Russian politics, few leaders from Western countries attended. For this World Cup, public resources were misused in that half of the stadiums built in Russia were left as “white elephants” with no long- term use. The tournament in Russia marked a shift from the West to the East with sponsors from authoritarian countries having saved the business model of FIFA. The policy of fining misconduct during the World Cup showed FIFA’s commit- ment to protect its remaining sponsors while proclaimed values, such as fighting racism, were of minor importance. The case of Iranian women using the opportu- nity not only to attend their national team’s games in Russia but also to advocate for the right of women to enter stadiums in Iran showed that football can also be an agent for social change. In two countries (Germany, United States), World Cup matches hosted female commentators on television for the first time. In Belgium, players operated largely above the Flemish-Walloon divide. The article concludes by comparing the last World Cup in Russia with the next one in Qatar and iden- tifying topics for future research.

VM i Football Manager: Han är Sveriges nya förbundskapten André Eriksson, 23, från Bromölla är Sveriges nya förbundskapten i Football Manager. Han representerar blågult i den andra upplagan av Copa Manageria, världsmästerskapet för FM-spelare. 16 nationer gör upp om den åtråvärda titeln i London den 1-2 december. Rekryteringen är genomförd av speltillverkaren Sports Interactive i samarbete med med SvenskaFans. – Det blir en mäktig känsla att representera sitt land och mäta krafterna mot andra som älskar Football Manager lika mycket som jag. Det sägs att man behöver lägga 10 000 timmar för att bli proffs på något. Riktigt så många timmar har jag kanske inte lagt men det har blivit många långa nätter genom åren. Nu känns det som att all tid varit värt det, jag är ju i VM, säger förbundskaptenen. André Eriksson bor för tillfället i London, där han till vardags arbetar med reklam och webbdesign, men kommer ursprungligen från Bromölla. Sina största FM-meriter, berättar han själv, är att ha tagit Ängelholms FF till Champions League-kvartsfinal. Han är alltså van vid att föra underdogs till framgång och förordar ett klassiskt, rakt 4-4-2 i grunden, kombinerat med noggrann scouting av motståndaren för att kunna hugga på svagheter. – Jag har haft spelet sedan det släpptes härom veckan och jag har redan hunnit sätta mig in i de nya funktionerna – taktikdelarna har blivit mer avancerade vilket jag tror är bra för min spelstil. Jag tror också att det utbyggda systemet för halvtidsinstruktioner och gruppdynamik kan vara till fördel för Sveriges chanser. In this paper, we assess empirically the connection between genetic diversity and the performance of sport teams. Focusing on football (soccer), we built a novel dataset of national teams of European countries that have participated in the European and the World Championships since 1970. Determining the genetic diversity of national teams is based on the distance between the genetic scores of every players’ origins in the team. Genetic endowments for each player are recovered using a matching algorithm based on family names. Performance is measured at both the unilateral and bilateral level. Identification of the causal link relies on an instrumental variable strategy that is based on past immigration at the country level about one generation before.

Oddsen: så ställer Sverige upp mot Österrike På måndag börjar Sveriges resa mot EM i Frankrike 2016 då man åker till Wien för att möta Österrike i den första EM- kvalmatchen. Och sett ur ett svenskt perspektiv ser det ljust ut med ett avancemang till turneringen. Sverige har över 80 procent chans att kvalificera sig till EM, enligt oddsen från spelbolaget Unibet. Frågan många ställer sig inför måndagens match är vilken elva förbundskapten Erik Hamrén tar ut. Enligt oddsen blir det en snarlik uppställning som i genrepet mot Estland, med vissa förändringar i anfallet. – Vi tror att Isaksson kommer att vara tillbaka mellan stolparna samt att backlinjen och mittfältet kommer att vara desamma mot Österrike som mot Estland. Do sportspeople with an immigrant background constitute a form of Swedish soft power? There are different initiatives in Sweden aiming to facilitate integration of newly arrived immigrants and refugees into the Swedish society, and sport, reportedly, is becoming a relevant social platform for integration as it breaks down ethnic barriers. These initiatives are also attracting international attention, which is the focus of this research. There is previous research about sport as soft power tool but not much studies concern integrative sports projects or sportspeople constituting a form of soft power. The research on sport as a form of Sweden‘s soft power is also limited. Methodologically, this thesis relies on qualitative content analysis of primary data. In order to get a comprehensive knowledge about the image given about Sweden through sport integration projects and perceptions of outstanding Swedish sportspeople of immigrant background this study used the method of triangulation in data collection.
