CHICAGO—Guest conductor Charles Dutoit returns to Symphony Center for two weeks of CSO programs May 12-21, including subscription concerts anchored by the works of Manuel de Falla (May 12 & 14) and Igor Stravinsky (May 19 & 20), a new Beyond the Score® exploration of Falla’s compositional life and history tied to Granada (May 13 & 15) and a one-night-only special concert with pianist Lang Lang as soloist in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (May 21). Dutoit is currently chief conductor and artistic adviser of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Conductor Laureate of the Orchestra, and music director of the Verbier Festival Orchestra.

On Thursday, May 12, at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 14, at 8:00 p.m. Charles Dutoit conducts a lively program featuring the music of Manuel de Falla, Maurice Ravel and . First is Ravel’s colorful and whimsical , followed by Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain, a rich and evocative portrait of the composer’s native Andalusia featuring Spanish pianist Javier Perianes as soloist in his CSO subscription debut. Perianes was the 2012 recipient of the National Music Prize awarded by the Ministry of Culture in Spain. Falla’s ballet The Three-Cornered Hat, an imaginative and humorous tale which highlights a few of Spain’s spirited traditional ethnic dances, is also part of the program and features acclaimed American mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack in her CSO debut. As part of the CSO’s ongoing celebration of its 125th anniversary season in 2015/16, the program also includes Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a work which received its U.S. premiere by the CSO in 1899.

Dutoit continues his residency leading the final program of the Beyond the Score® series on Friday, May 13, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, May 15, at 3:00 p.m. in an exploration of the life and music of Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. The program, developed by Beyond the Score® creative director Gerard McBurney, focuses Falla’s prolific compositional period of nearly 20 years in the historic city of Granada. The Beyond the Score® concerts also include pianist Javier Perianes performing Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain with the CSO.

Dutoit leads the CSO in all-Stravinsky programs on Thursday, May 19, at 8:00 p.m. and Friday, May 20, at 1:30 p.m. Opening the program is Stravinsky’s Fireworks, the first of Stravinsky’s works performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Next is Stravinsky’s Symphony in C, a work which received its world premiere with the CSO in 1940. The program concludes with Stravinsky’s break-out ballet score for The Firebird, which propelled the composer onto the international scene after its premiere in 1910.

Dutoit also conducts a one-night-only special concert with the CSO on Saturday, May 21, at 8:00 p.m. The program includes Stravinsky’s Fireworks and The Firebird as well as Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with internationally celebrated pianist Lang Lang as soloist.

Swiss conductor Charles Dutoit is one of today’s foremost musicians, most notably holding a directorship with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra until 2002. He now serves as chief conductor and artistic advisor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Conductor Laureate of the , and music director of the Verbier Festival Orchestra, also appearing frequently with many of the world’s leading orchestras as guest conductor. Well known for his interpretations of French, Russian, and 20th century music, Dutoit has also established himself as a respected opera conductor. Dutoit’s recordings with the Montreal Symphony have garnered over 40 national and international awards, while he personally has been awarded a Canadian Music Council Medal, honorary doctorates from three universities, and was named a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. Dutoit has had a long-standing relationship with the CSO going back to his debut with the Orchestra at the Ravinia Festival in July of 1982, and his Symphony Center debut in June of 2000.
