THANK YOU! 2017-2018 ANNUAL REPORT Cannon School nurtures relationships at the heart of learning and engages the learner in a journey of growth.

2 Giving the Gift of Growth

Our community has given so much. Our community has received so much. This annual report has been designed to capture with image and list those who have given and a sense of all that we have received in 2017-2018.

I write this brief introductory note with two thoughts in mind. As one who has found himself more often on the recipient side of the page during my time at Cannon, I want to say how grateful I am for all that so many have given to make this work so doable and so enjoyable. Those who give have MATTHEW E. GOSSAGE HEAD OF SCHOOL given so many the opportunity to believe in the work that goes on here daily.

I also write with the thought of the gentle reminder. All of us, those who have given and those who have received (and I know the line is often blurred between the two because so many give), have received a most significant gift. This particular gift came as the result of a great deal of hard work on the part of more than a few individuals. This gift, just as with all true gifts, was given with a spirit of truly hoping others might benefit and grow. And this gift was given with a deep sense of respect and regard for this special community.

We need to be reminded that our school received the gift of a new mission statement last year. This statement has brought and will continue to bring a new clarity to our purpose. This declaration frees us to focus on the heart of learning and to acknowledge that we will always find relationships at the center of this process. And our mission statement encourages each of us to commit to helping others grow while holding onto the conviction that each day provides opportunities for our growth.

As we approach the celebration of our 50th anniversary as a school, let’s be sure to grasp how many have given throughout our history in support of such a vibrant mission that continues to be compelling and relevant.

Sincerely,

Matthew E. Gossage Head of School

3 Respecting Our Relationships

“Cannon School nurtures relationships at the heart of learning and engages the learner in a journey of growth.” As Matt pointed out, Cannon’s new mission statement was a tremendous gift we all received last year.

Throughout 2017-2018, faculty, staff, and students spent time reflecting on our new mission statement and the role each of us plays in living it out. Not surprisingly, I was especially drawn to the idea of relationships.

Here at Cannon, building relationships means more than TODD W. HARTUNG, JR. just getting to know each other. At Cannon, when we build DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT relationships, we promise to connect with each other, and we promise to help each other grow. As a member of Cannon’s administration and as a parent, I’m deeply thankful for that—and I know you are too because I see visible signs of your commitment all around us.

I speak for our entire school community when I say that 2017-2018 was an incredible year because of your generosity. As I was writing this letter in July, our Middle School Addition was nearing completion, and The Mill, our new Upper School technology space, was taking shape. We were looking forward to construction on the new Multipurpose Athletic Center. We had exceeded our Cannon Fund goal, and we were grateful for support from twenty- eight corporate partners.

As always, relationships were at the heart of our successes in 2017-2018. I extend special thanks to the Advancement Committee, led by Joan Ankrom, and the Cannon Fund Parent Liaisons, led by Anne and Holt Morrison and Siobhán and Hans Peterson. Our school community remains humbled by the constant support of our Groups led by Susan Lewis, Nichole Majors, Josh Meeks, and Mandee Moore. And we remain proud when the members of the Alumni Board, led by Eddie Alcorn, return to serve their alma mater.

I hope you will spend a few minutes looking through this report because you will see how the gift of your relationships enhanced our campus and our culture. Thank you for connecting with us and helping us grow.

Sincerely,

Todd Hartung Director of Advancement

MIDDLE SCHOOL ADDITION

On August 24, Cannon School celebrated the grand opening of the new Middle School Addition. The 23,000 square-foot building houses the incredible spaces listed below, and our Middle School teachers explain on the next page how the building also brings new possibilities to life.

• World Language suite with flexible classroom space for grades 5 through 8 • Common area with screen capabilities and creative seating options • Middle School library with books, study pods, and flexible furniture • Science labs with exposed ceilings and roll-out cabinetry to make demo tables • Seventh and eighth grade classrooms situated to foster community

“We couldn’t be more pleased with the new building,” said Head of Middle School Carla Moyer. “It’s been two years of thoughtful planning and preparation and many conversations with teachers about what was needed for a student-centered space. We are thrilled and honored by the support of our families who made this all possible.”

THE MILL @ CANNON SCHOOL

On August 24, Cannon School was also thrilled to announce a partnership with Skookum, the Charlotte- based digital transformation and innovation firm, to name our new Upper School technology space The Mill @ Cannon School. Co-founders of Skookum and Cannon parents, James Hartsell and Bryan Delaney, joined us to share the significance of this new name.

“The Cannon name has been synonymous with innovation and community for over 100 years in Cabarrus County. The reason Cannon Mills was able to become the success story it was is because James William Cannon took a chance to innovate,” explained James Hartsell.

“We at Cannon School find ourselves at a unique inflection point, not only in our own future but also more globally in the midst of a digital industrial revolution that will challenge how we educate and prepare our children for the jobs of tomorrow,” James continued. “We believe this new facility has the unique opportunity to not only evolve the manner by which our children can grow and learn, but also significantly bolster the impact Cannon has on our surrounding community. So in the interest of connecting the legacy of the Cannon name to the future of what we hope to achieve at this school, we have chosen to name this building ‘The Mill @ Cannon School.’”

Cannon School thanks the Hartsell and Delaney families for their leadership gift to the Imagine Tomorrow Campaign, and James and Bryan for their partnership in helping us design the new space, which includes a makerspace, digital media lab, fabrication studio, and media production studio.

9 IMAGINE TOMORROW

Cannon School extends its deepest gratitude to the 194 families, friends, alumni, faculty, and staff, who from 2016 to 2017, raised more than $3.8 million for the Imagine Tomorrow Campaign. Together, these donors created new opportunities for Cannon students with the new Middle School Addition, dedicated classrooms for the Lower School World Language Program and the After School Program, and the new Upper School technology space—The Mill @ Cannon School.

We simply could not have made this possible without the incredible support of the Cannon community, who are helping today’s students become tomorrow’s thought leaders. Thank you!

12 Caring for Our Community

In 2017-2018, the theme of the Cannon Fund was One Tree. Many Branches. The purpose of this theme was to illustrate that the Cannon Fund is the one fundraising effort that truly impacts the entire school. I liked using this symbol of a tree because the tree would not be able to grow without the strength of our community. Last year, the Cannon Fund continued to grow thanks to the generous support of so many of you.

Together, we surpassed the Cannon Fund goal of $500,000 with a total of $509,105. Your support of this effort has meant so much because it enhances academic opportunities for students, provides critical support to our athletic and arts programs, and allows for professional development for our faculty and staff.

I would like to thank our Parent Liaison team, led for the past three years by our Co-Chairs Anne and Holt Morrison and Siobhán and Hans Peterson. These volunteers gave their time, but most importantly, they gave us inspiration. As Cannon parents, they understood and communicated that it takes a community of friends—parents, teachers, staff, administrators, alumni and their parents, and grandparents—to help each learner on a journey of growth. Because of their efforts, 668 donors were inspired to give—some for the first time and some for another consecutive year.

Thank you again to everyone who has given back to Cannon School in so many ways. We look forward to another successful year in 2018-2019 with your support.

Sincerely,

David Ibsen Director of Development and Annual Giving

13 Your Cannon Fund Dollars at Work All Around Us Every year, we ask families and friends to make the Cannon Fund their first giving priority because it benefits all aspects of campus life and becomes part of the school’s operating budget. Here are just a few examples of how your Cannon Fund dollars were utilized in 2017-2018:

INSIDE THE CLASSROOM The Cannon Fund provided new interactive SMART boards, an array of musical instruments, flexible classroom furniture, and teaching and learning materials for the Lower School Idea Hub.

14 OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM The Cannon Fund afforded professional development opportunities for teachers, stipends for coaches, transportation for teams to games, meets, and matches, and funding for Project Wrap In, House Games, and student days of service.

AROUND CAMPUS The Cannon Fund improved campus through the renovation of Foundation Hall, the restoration of the Tysinger Family Track, the addition of solar shades in Campbell Gallery, and the installation of additional security cameras.

15 The Cannon Fund

Those who give at the $1,000 level and above are recognized as members of the Cannon Society. Cannon Society names are designated in bold typeface.

Loyal donors are the cornerstone of Cannon School’s success, providing the means by which Cannon can carry out its mission. The Consecutive Giving Society was created to honor Cannon School’s most loyal families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. Names of those who have given for five or more years consecutively are designated with an asterisk.

25 A Life Well-Lived: Matthew Hill Grimmett III, M.D.

NEW MULTIPURPOSE ATHLETIC CENTER TO BE NAMED AFTER A DOCTOR WITH CLOSE TIES TO CONCORD AND CANNON SCHOOL

Much is written about the Greatest Generation—the men and women who grew up in the United States during the Great Depression and went on to fight in World War II, supporting the war effort, their families, and their communities. It’s the stuff that movies are made of, but in reality, many of us are fortunate to know members of this incredible generation simply as “grams and gramps” or “great-grandmother and great-grandfather.”

Matthew Hill Grimmett III is one who grew up during this period. He was born in 1916 in McMinnville, Tennessee, where he was known as an excellent student and an all-around good athlete. Upon his graduation from McMinnville High School, he was offered a four-year football scholarship to Vanderbilt University. Unfortunately, his football career was cut short in his junior year when he sustained a knee injury. Never one to give up, Matthew worked after his classes Dr. Matthew Hill Grimmett III to pay for his final year. He graduated in 1939. and Mrs. Martha Grimmett

Upon the completion of his studies at Vanderbilt, Matthew was accepted to Duke University’s School of Medicine. During his final semester of medical school, war had been declared, and he joined the Navy. Prior to shipping out, he married the love of his life, Martha Ligon, a nurse and his wife of seventy years. During the war, he was assigned to the 1st Marine Division and participated with embarked Marines, island hopping during the Pacific Campaign en route to Japan. At the end of the war, Matthew returned to Duke Medical School and completed a residency in pediatrics.

While Dr. Grimmett was finishing his residency, Mr. Charles Cannon was seeking a pediatrician in Cabarrus County. Mr. Cannon and others convinced Dr. Grimmett to move to the mill town, and Dr. Grimmett set up his first office in Kannapolis in 1948. Dr. and Mrs. Grimmett moved to a small house in Concord, quickly putting down roots as caring members of the Concord - Kannapolis community. Times were different then, and it was not uncommon for Dr. Grimmett to accept pies rather than payment from parents who couldn’t afford medical care for their children. He also made house calls.

After seventeen years of practicing pediatrics in Concord and Kannapolis, and due to a service-related disability, Dr. Grimmett returned to Duke Medical School and completed a residency in radiology, which he practiced at Cabarrus Memorial until his semi-retirement and a move to Sunset Beach, North Carolina, in the mid-70s.

Holding on to his passion for helping others, Dr. Grimmett continued practicing radiology in Shallotte and Loris until his retirement in 1989. Dr. and Mrs. Grimmett remained married until his passing in August 2013, followed by hers in August 2016. They are survived by a son and daughter and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cannon students, Victor and Lucas Lopez, are proud to have called Dr. Matthew Hill Grimmett III their great- grandfather. Upon completion of the new Multipurpose Athletic Center, the building will be named in honor of Dr. Grimmett, who embodied the core values that our school community holds close—passion, curiosity, integrity, teamwork, respect, and kindness.

27 2017-2018 Endowment Summaries

THE ENDOWMENT AT CANNON SCHOOL BUILDS THE FOUNDATION FOR LONG-TERM STABILITY AND SUCCESS, AND IS A CRITICAL SOURCE OF INCOME.

The endowment has steadily grown to a balance of $10,338,184 at the end of this past fiscal year. An individual or family may choose to establish a named fund that will support an area of the school that is most important to them and their family, support Cannon’s general endowment, or support an existing endowed fund. The principal from these funds is held in perpetuity and invested for long-term growth.

Gifts to the endowment will leave a legacy in which future generations of Cannon students, faculty, and families can enjoy the experience of a Cannon education. These funds enable Cannon to rely on more than revenue from the school to support needs such as:

• Providing financial aid for students • Attracting and retaining dynamic faculty members • Improving and enhancing educational, athletic, and artistic programs • Enhancing the campus • Supporting school operations

28 GENERAL ENDOWMENT The general endowment provides the school with the financial flexibility to meet future challenges and take advantage of quality-enhancing opportunities that fall outside tuition and the operations budget.

THE FRED AND OPAL BRYANT ENDOWED FUND The Fred and Opal Bryant Endowed Fund was established in 2016 and provides for the continued enhancement and beautification of the Cannon School campus landscape.

THE MALMSTROM FAMILY ENDOWED FUND The Malmstrom Endowed Fund for Academic Excellence was established in 2016 by the Malmstrom family—, Susanne, Daniela ’14, Emily ’15, and Caroline ’16. The fund provides assistance to Cannon’s Academic Success and Learning Support Program developed by Upper School Learning Specialist Teresita Lloréns-Hurtado along with assistance from several Cannon School students, including Emily and Caroline Malmstrom.

MICHAEL GRAY, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Michael Gray, Jr. Memorial Scholarship is an endowed scholarship fund for students who demonstrate strong character, academic dedication, and financial need.

SPEEDWAY CHILDREN’S CHARITIES ENDOWMENT FOR DIVERSITY The Speedway Children’s Charities Endowment for Diversity funds special scholarships for excellent students who have financial need and supports multicultural programs aimed to increase diversity awareness in the school community.

Parents at Cannon

PARENTS ARE THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY AND PROVIDE COUNTLESS HOURS OF THEIR TIME AND TALENTS TO CREATE MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES AND SUPPORTIVE PROGRAMS AT CANNON SCHOOL. WE THANK THE PAC LEADERSHIP AND MEMBERS FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO CANNON!

Cannon Connections, led last year by Mandee Moore, aims to ensure that all Cannon parents feel welcome and involved. The group plans book fairs, the Shop and Share programs, the Father-Daughter Dance, Mother-Son Event, speakers, coffees, and more. Each event is planned with the purpose of enriching school life for every student, teacher, and family.

Cannon Cultures, headed this past year by Nichole Majors, is a parent committee devoted to serving and supporting students, teachers, and parents who believe diversity and multiculturalism are essential to the school. The group focuses on ensuring that our school is truly inclusive and values and respects all individuals, capturing their uniqueness, talents, skills, backgrounds, and abilities.

Cougar Athletic Club is our booster organization that supports the interscholastic athletic and physical education programs here at Cannon. From helping with concessions to providing finances for team equipment, infrastructure, and spirit events, the Cougar Club never fails to build fan enthusiasm. Many thanks to Josh Meeks, last year’s president.

CAFTA (Cannon Advocates For The Arts), led last year by Susan Lewis, supports our award-winning interactive and exploratory Fine Arts program. CAFTA helps with our Visual Arts Night, April arts events, concerts, and theater productions. The group also helps fund materials and equipment for our fine arts programs.
