FALL/WINTER 2014 NEWSLETTER

Dear Friends of Phoenicia Publishing —

Throughout 2014, we’ve been extremely appreciative of your support. Because of it, Phoenicia has been able to continue as an independent publisher of deserving works, and to return a significant share of the profits to the authors and artists, encouraging their continued creativity. All our books are designed for you, the reader, with clear typography, beautiful artwork, excellent printing, and bindings that will last.

If you’ve recently purchased one of our books, please let us simply say a heartfelt thank you! If not, we hope you’ll look through our catalogue. Some gift suggestions follow below the list of recent titles. And there’s a special offer for you, too, at the end of this letter.

NEW IN 2014 (please click the links in blue for a full description.)

How Many Roads? Photographs of the 1960s and early 70s by Jonathan Sa’adah

“A book...that obliterates the distance between the present and the charged past. These photographs are the work of a master.” -- Teju Cole

Sa’adah’s book portrays a turbulent time in American history, when war and increasing corporate domination led many young people to search for alternative ways of living and structuring society. It contains 91 sepia photographs arranged in three section: “The Roads,” “The War,” and “The Garden” and includes an introduction by Teju Cole, essays by Hoyt Alverson, Steven Tozer, and Elizabeth Adams, and a preface by the photographer. Both editions (paperback and collector’s hardcover) would make excellent gifts for anyone who remembers the 60s, or for their children.

Night Willow by Luisa A. Igloria

“a singular and revelatory voice in American poetry.” -- Sabina Murray

Night Willow is a beautiful, searching, and original book of poetry that goes very deeply into the emotional space in which memories of our past are triggered by the ordinary events of the present day. Luisa Igloria, who teaches writing at Old Dominion University, has won numerous prestigious poetry awards in the U.S., and is the first Filipina woman of letters installed in the Palanca Literary Hall of Fame. In addition to publishing many other full-length poetry collections, she’s been writing a poem a day for the past four years, archived at Dave Bonta’s Via Negativa website. The Scarlatti and Couperin Doubles by Jon Appleton, performed by Minkyung Oh

“...a beautiful addition to literature” -- Steve Reich “An extraordinary performance of sensitivity, delicacy, and imaginative power.” -- Gabriel Chodos

Composer Jon Appleton’s second CD published by Phoenicia has become a great favorite of listeners. This neo-classical, melodic and emotional piano music, brilliantly performed by Minkyung Oh, is available both as a traditional CD and as an MP3 download.
