2. Methodology

A sample of 119 self-completion evaluation forms at four community and audience development events between 21 st October and 19 th November 2011. Details of the sample size from each event are below.

Frequency Percent People Get Ready 47 39.5 The art of burial 26 21.8 Postmodernist Identity 33 27.7 Spotlight on Africa and the Diaspora 13 10.9 Total 119 100.0

As the results are drawn from self-completion forms they may not be truly representative of the audience at events as it will only include those who have chosen to complete the forms. This may mean people were moved to complete forms if they particularly enjoyed the event, wanted to comment or complain about the event or enjoy completing forms.

Appendix 3: What did you like most about the event you attended?

People Get Ready Everything I attended, 3 films, Bloodah go run, Black panthers & step forward I gained insight into the staying power project that I didn't have before Speaker is very knowledgeable and articulates her subject very well. Relevant and about my history. The panther presentation. Poster making workshop. The art workshop. Very informant about the Black presence. The importance of the archives. Encouragement from facilitators, material available. Creative participation. I enjoyed the music and variety of exhibitions to attend. Saw two very good films, black panther film and blood an go run. Seeing films that I have never seen before. The cultural relevance. It was like going down memory lane, the racist way of life! Then the police were awful, I had forgotten how bad. The speakers in the people get moving session. Sound, style, sex talk. E-mail. Diversity Black Panthers. The reggae soundtrack.

12 Films. The end result is wonderful for everyone, regardless of skill level. An interactive experience that I haven't seen since school (I'm 40 now) brilliant. Professional interviewer and great atmosphere during talks with guests. I had the chance to see what it was like living in Brixton in the 70s for black people. Their lifestyle, clothing and the way they used to socialize. Vibrant, colourful, refreshingly different and varied. It reminded me of my self, it was like belonging to the past. Very honest brave account of the times. I liked the interview with the main girl. Sound, style, sex talk. The relationship between punk and reggae and the political and cultural messages that were giving. Balance Fun helpful and inspiring. RCA lectures and sound, style, sex. Loved the art work, putting things together. Completely hands on. The films were very enlightening and the footage was a pleasure to watch. Speakers in the sound, style, sex talk. It was relational, it roused cultural social political awareness of my childhood, it recited and added. The speakers were very interesting. Speakers, venue, talk really good. Step forward youth, the youth were brutally honest. Footage.

The Art of Burial Learnt new things about something we must all do one day. Good variety of academic and topical. Diversity of talks. Cross geographical and passion about subjects. Ecopod info. The variety of geographical area covered. The level of scholarship on display, we don't often meet curators and great to see them come out of the cupboard. I liked the variety of the speakers and the different practices and ideas they bought to it. Morning sessions. Quality of speakers and range of subjects, very enthuastic and accessible. The variety of subjects covered. Variety of cultures included, quality of visuals. Range of speakers, linked in with current exhibition at V&A so could see objects. Variety. Interesting subject. The diversity of speakers and topics. Variety.

13 Variety of cultures highlighted. Extent and variety. Dr Julian Litton. Julian Litten very knowledgeable and entertaining. Jack Bell very interesting angle. Variety learned. The variety of content and speakers. Comparative aspect of regarding one topic in different times and cultures.

Postmodernist Identity I have not yet seen the exhibition. It was educational for me, I now have a good overview of the development of Art and Design in second half of the 20th century. I will look at the period with a new awareness. An open debate questioning the relevance and identity of modern/post modern art movement. Motivation, conditioning, driving force. Connecting art and politics and sociology. The quality and scope of the debate. Diversity and contradiction of point of views. The lecture and replies from Mike Gonzalas. Please ask him to come back. The presentations. Listening to Professor Gonzalas. Stimulation and different ideas. Debate! Level of participation and discussion. It was incredibly personal and relevant to my identity. The content. The discussion. The different point of view of the speakers. The readiness to question the integrity of the exhibition. Very refreshing and encouraging, more of these please! The debate itself, its more interaction of thoughts. The depth of knowledge and great efforts to answer some very complex questions. Debate x2 Subject covered. The dialogue between two different point of views of Oliver and Mike. The debate became rich because of this. The fact that some light was shed on this ambiguous period for me. I am just beginning to learn about post- modernism and loved some of the arguments put across by the speakers and audience of which there were many. Learning I knew nothing about it. About hour to decide, now is now and future. The enthusiasm and variety of participants (audience). The stark contrast between the presenters. Variety of speakers. Discussion of speakers. Great speakers inviting good responses from the audience. Content and debate.

14 Unexpected, but very informative content.

Spotlight on Africa and the Diaspora The talks related to the objects and the variety of activities. Theatre costume plat mands. The carnival lyric writing inspired by the cloak. Overall an excellent variety of events. Relaxing good atmosphere, unusual content. The music band and the information on beads trading industry, trading takes back to 15th century. Learning to use the computer and new facts. New knowledge and new skill in photography and computer. The interactive and participative nature. The music. The malik amber tour by Avril Itorsford and beads talk from Kandace Chimbiri. Speaker's enthusiasm and level of knowledge on subject.

Appendix 4: Can you give an example of something new you learnt or did?

People Get Ready I know want to learn how to sign Black cultural archives. How punk and reggae amalgamated. Cut out stencil work and paint rolling, great fun. Cutting and making stencils with paint. About the music and racism in the 70s, 60s teddy boy, N front. I realized the culture of the black community in the 70s in more depth. College and printing. I learnt information about John Letts and the presence of black gay artists in the UK. More knowledge about black panther programme. Legacy of the black panthers I have heard of some of the educational programmes. But nothing to the extent of their reach. Learnt a lot about the influence of black music on punk rock and the political times of the 70s, 80s and 90s. No - we already knew as we lived in that time. Music the struggles of steel pulse and the other side of rock against. Reggae group playing consistently with posh groups. Excellent historic video footage of New Cross. 1981 I haven't used PVA glue for 15 years! The black panthers, not knowing they helped people so much. Britain hasn't changed so much over the past 40 years. Graphic font style. Everything, technique application from beginning to end. Stepping back in history, personal accounts of life and experiences.

15 I learned more about fashion style of black people in this period and I was surprised to see how proud they are about their origins. And by the fact that they don't see themselves as British even though they were born in the UK. Relationship between BCA & V&A. We lived it. Did not realize that they had black teachers back then! As above. Amount of images available and where to access them. Printing techniques. Putting together a poster with a powerful meaning, strong image. Effect of ink on the roller/ghost image. I learnt about the black panthers, something I knew nothing about until today. Eric Clapton said Moseley was right!

Did not know about the relationship fusion between punk and reggae, music and the message behind it, amazing! Learnt a lot about the punk/rock/reggae history. Did not know steel pulse was from Birmingham. Eric Claptons's agreement with Enoch Powell's speech. I didn't know that Eric Clapton endorsed Enoch Powell's rivers of blood speech. I've learnt that nothing has changed regarding racial tension with the police, social injustice and poor standard of education in inner city schools. People's feelings. Not much I'm 54 so I actually lived it.

The Art of Burial Shroud burials, ecopods. Did not know about Chinese burial. Chinese tomb. Ghanaian subject. Ecopod. Having lived in both the Middle East and China, I still learned a great many new things. Tails about Middle Eastern and Chinese ancient burials. Ghana the coffins and practice. Lots, particularly about China and Iran, Julian Lilten was brilliant! Islamic popular culture. Understanding iconography, integral meaning from objects. Ecopod. Princes Dai excavation. Ghana! Amazing. Burial in sub sahara Africa. Chinese burial artefacts, Muslim imams. Religion and politics, ecopod manufacture. History of funeral industry. China. African coffins and Chinese burial practise.

16 Coffin camels to shrine cities! Wow! Ghanain coffins! Brilliant. Had no previous knowledge about coffins in Ghana. Learned about how different interpretations of the same object come about and are justified (Chinese site).

Postmodernist Identity I have never considered the issues discussed, equality etc. in relation to art. Especially this period of (among other issues) superficiality, reflection of pop culture etc. Listened to the experts on modern/post modern art. Greater consideration of the cultural ambiguities of post-modernism. That modernism is still alive and it has not ended. Too many to list. 0 Postmodernism ideas and politics. No. I haven’t thought before about post modernism . Participation in a factual debate. What post modernism thinks it is? That I need to study more art history and social history, very inspirational. Relation of subject to capitalism. The connection of mask and postmodernism. Extending my thinking beyond the object and it's place and space. looking at postmodernism as of 1965 political movement in Italy.

The Queen asked the LSE for an reason for which we are in the mess we're in. LSE replied they didn't know. The history, context of the time. It made me wonder if we are stuck in the moment of postmodernism what will be next? If anything, but that said it left me with a sense if hope, which I didn’t think I'd be walking away with. Exploding buildings for photographic effect. More what postmodernism means etc. Linking history to art is necessary. How I experience the art is generational. It is so important that our meetings around art has to be intergenerational. Economic socialism! Opened my mind and other ways of thinking about postmodernism. Example of design and artefacts all feelings and non written participants. My roots are in Marxism. Postmodernism! Metropolitan Indians.

Spotlight on Africa and the Diaspora Found out about 'work houses' in contemporary UK in Billy Waters group. The above.

17 Africa dance moves. Cutting out on the computer. Take picture and put it in a gallery computer. Visiting a calypso. A new style of African music. History and background of St Maurice.

AppeAppendixndix 555:5: Are there any ways that you feel this event could bbee improved?

People Get Ready Involve other ethnic groups for their input The lighting of the screen a bit bright for me Next should be on Malcolm X, more please. No. None. Technical improvements on the sound and subtitles of the archives. Bit of context and poster history power. Not that I can think of other than some of the other things I would have liked to attend clashed. Publish the programme of events online as well, more money spent on marketing. Q&As after each presentation, while their discussion was still fresh in the mind. I’d have preferred talk programmes to run after each other, as I did not want to miss the overlapping talks. Better publicity for the event. More still photography. Wanted to see more but many clashes. Louder music. 1, introduction, 2, better sound. Maybe a fabric letter in African textiles could be available to collage on. It was rushed due to the museum. Advertised more to fill up the auditorium, particularly amongst young people.

It would have been nice if someone had introduced the content of the video. Giving audience an insight about it, (I had the programme) but hearing about the event from a human voice is always better. Refreshments: Caribbean rum cake. A talk would have been interesting. Drink provided (water). Giving it more time, not just an evening! Heating in room. I found it very enjoyable. More tutors, larger projects. More encouragement to dance and socialise near the DJ area.

Yes, hold over 2 nights minimum. Please run again, take this to schools/colleges.

18 Yes, it was poorly advertised and should have been marketed during the summer holidays. More footage. A discussion on perspective for younger audience.

The Art of Burial Repeat more often. I would like to have been able to see some objects and perhaps a handling section. Having travelled a long way I started out early. Coffee on arival would have been appreciated rather than having to wait until nearly midday.

Provide lunch at optional extra cost. Online resources, recorded talks and downloadable content. No, it was good. Slightly closer focus on the topic. Better introduction, bit of context. Just more of them and better advertised. Morning session seemed less relevant, Marilyn should have provided better overview and guidance to the day. E.g why were presenters chosen and what were the common themes. Not starting at ten when we had to wait outside building until 10am. Artefacts to see and handle.

Postmodernist IIdentitydentity More hot coffee, otherwise excellent. For 'discussion' part, put chairs in half circles or concentric circles, otherwise it remains a series of individual speakers, not a discussion. Air-conditioning please far too hot. Will there a be a response on this seminar? So many excellent points made by Mike G. Some people in the audience were very long winded and confused in their presentation of ideas. More food. Longer. More of them. Please turn the central heating down. Have more people debating, an artist, designer, art historian and architect. Perhaps a way of bringing back the debate to the core of the argument in order to avoid us going into tangents. More speakers. Longer, it could have been longer and had another speaker. Speaking about style, image, identity and minority groups. More biscuits or sandwiches. More discussion focus on the content i.e V&A exhibition, not economic socialism. No. Milk and biscuits ran out! More milk for coffee.

19 More seminar like this would be appreciated. Televised, more people need to know!

Spotlight on Africa and the Diaspora Excellent interactive and inspiring. Better introduction and information on bands. No! It was excellent. Make more advertise about the activity in the museum. 0 Wish I'd known more about it before. I am not sure. The guided tours should be repeated to give people the opportunity to do both two. I was only able to do one because they clashed. Ways to facilitate orientation various events and wider publicity for more events please.

Appendix 666:6: Any other commentscomments????

People Get Ready Lovely helpful ladies who instilled the confidence to make me get creative. Joyful. Excellent 8pm talk Sound Style, Sex Think. In particular about the Black British gay singer David McAlmout. Excellent facilities and talks.

I would like to buy 'legacy of black panthers' [email protected] A discussion would have been good. Very friendly staff. Came to the kid's African jewellery session, run by this same group and it was fabulous. My daughter loved it. Enjoyable and fun 10/10. It would have been nice to specify if the video is available online and maybe give an address or a link on how to find it. Apart from Black History Month, need more of black British history with Liverpool, Birmingham etc… Wanted to speak with others. No. Publicise more widely, engage all black people around the nation. Very enjoyable. I would welcome more events like this, about other cultures and races. Better publicise event. Quality deserves better marketing and more time please! Good selection of things to dip into too.

20 The Art of Burial Fantastic and stimulating day. Ecopod talk, felt more like a sales pitch. Do more of there 1 day courses. Liked the fact that the lighter topics were kept for the afternoon when people get wearier. Don't want to fill in this form, too long. Loved it! Fascinating day superb value. Sound engineering continues to be appalling, either way too loud and quiet. And perhaps send presenters on basic presentation courses.

I would have liked an additional break or lunch earlier to miss the crowds. Too much information requested!

Postmodernist Identity The discussion was fascinating, not just the speakers but also contributions from audience members ( two in particular).

Please have mics for question time. Very difficult to hear Oliver - no projection and audience questions often unable to hear, so frustrating. I would like questions to be more succinct. Hope there will be more similar events. Will come again. Very enjoyable and good to be amongst like minded people. Refreshments break could have been longer.

Please manage the questions more actively, some questions became lectures without critique. More of debates. Also more about the corruption of money. Very good. It is a friendly atmosphere, intimacy enhances desire to engage in debate.

A very big thank you and please host more and more! Very good event otherwise.

Spotlight on Africa and the Diaspora

The people were very nice. More educational/historical content. No.

Excellent but I wish to see more in the future.
