April-June 2005 Notes from the Trailhead:

Spring Song by Louise Rill

Singing liquid notes In the green bud tree A willow warbler Welcomes the sun on the old wall Its song melts away The long grey winter Sing of sweet hope Let no late frost Stop its trilling throat

April is National Poetry Month and there is little more in- spiring for a poem than winter slowly giving way to spring. Spring is the time for new beginnings and rebirth. Each year at this time most of us long to spend more time out- doors. The warmer weather… the longer periods of daylight… the spring flowers beginning to bloom… all of these conspire to inspire us. Take this opportunity to get out and enjoy the weather and meet new people. Let this spring be a new beginning for you to participate in the activities that our club has to offer. Pledge to go on at least one hike this spring. Look through the activities schedule right now and circle a few events that look interest- ing, and then put them on your schedule. Also, take a look at the ad for our club’s Fall Outing. I real- ize that it is often difficult to plan that far ahead, but unless it’s on your schedule, it will be here before you realize. We are planning an event that is somewhat different than those in our recent past so join us as we all try something new.

See you on the trails! Christopher Tausch

Hiking Resources on the Web Sometimes a walk around cyberspace can enhance your walk in the woods……. While many purists would argue that they walk in the woods to get away from civilization and technology, many others have found re- sources on the internet that greatly enhance their enjoyment. Our own website, www.hikeleader.com has links to numerous re- sources on the web. Surf around! Looking for an idea for a hike? Try out these websites:

The New Jersey Trail Conference’s Hikes of the Week. Over 100 hikes fully described including level of difficulty, how to get there, what maps to buy, whether dogs are welcome, etc. Writ- ten and compiled by Dan Chazin, this is one of the best places to find a hike in our area. http://www.nynjtc.com/hotw.html

A nifty website that has a searchable database of local hikes is : http://www.localhikes.com/ Search by zip code, difficulty, terrain, quality of views, etc.

Another nice free site is “Hiking in New Jersey” http://www.purdes.com/njhiking/.

Once you start clicking and surfing, you get the itch to get outside! Enjoy! Rob Lehmann, Webmaster ADK-North Jersey

RAMAPO CHAPTER MEETING Our next chapter meeting is on Thursday, June 16th. The program is entitled “STORM KING MOUNTAIN, AND THE BIRTH OF MODERN ENVIRONMENTALISM”. The talk, presented by Dr. Bob Lifset of Co- lumbia University, will explore the controversy surrounding Con Ed's attempt to develop a hydro-electric plant atop Storm King Mountain. This 18 year struggle was instrumental in changing New York's envi- ronmental policies and it also launched groups such as the Riverkeeper. The presentation will explore the idea that Storm King is the birthplace of modern American environmentalism. Our meeting will begin at 7:30 PM at the Nanuet Public Library. Please plan to at- tend and learn more about one of your favorite sites. Refreshments and conversation will follow the program...... Suzan Gordon
