Bill Oppenheim, January 3, 2007–Nominations From the Floor Bret Jones, at Airdrie, felt we were underestimating a FROM THE DESK OF... little bit the accomplishments of Include, the GI Pimlico Special winner by Broad Brush who has now sired 20 Bill Oppenheim winners in his first crop, three stakes winners, including GI Oak Leaf winner Cash Included. He=s number six on NOMINATIONS FROM THE FLOOR the freshman sire list (having never raced at two Though 74 stallions have merited a mention in this himself), and stands this year for $25,000). No worries, column over the last three weeks, we did say I agree he=s done really well. His first yearlings started with >nominations from the floor.= We had quite a good selling well in July, and kept on impressing the judges response, with five individuals and three farms and selling well, so much so that Insta-Tistics credits nominating a total of 10 stallions. One of our readers nominated Ashford=s Hold That Veterans: The powerful 1994 sire crop includes three Tiger, a half-brother to Belmont winner Editor=s Note by horses who have led North America=s general sire list: Storm Cat. He won the 2002 G1 Grand Criterium in A.P. Indy (twice, including 2006); El Prado (also France (then 1400 meters, now renamed the Legardere) runner-up twice); and Saint Ballado. (no appointment necessary) Inspect our stallions and enjoy Saturday, Jan. 6 food and refreshments. Sunday, Jan. 7 MARK YOUR CALENDARS, Monday, Jan. 8 Tuesday, Jan. 9 10am to 2pm on these days: Finally, one of our Italian-bred readers told us he Bill Oppenheim may be contacted at [email protected]. thought we needed to recognize two stallions who Please cc TDN management at stand in Italy: the little-known Martino Alfonso, a son [email protected]. of Marju whose first small crop (four-year-olds of 2006) includes Group 1 winner Ramonti; and Rob=s Spirit, a son of Theatrical who ranked number 12 on the 2006 European Freshman Sire List with nine winners, including the group-placed stakes winner Rob=s Love as well as two stakes-placed horses. LEADING SIRES Through Dec. 31, bloodhorse.com showed A.P. Indy well clear for his second North American championship on the general sire list. Dynaformer finished second, the fifth time he has finished in the top five. Leading third-crop sire Giant=s Causeway finished third, with 14 stakes winners in 2006, eight of them graded SWs; they must be racehorses more than show horses, because he=s not as hot as he should be for finishing third on the general sire list with three crops racing. Pleasant Tap (see above) was fourth, with Maria=s Mon fifth. He=s a great example of a sire who appears to have >stood the raise=: he had the GI 2001 winner Monarchos in his first crop, and his 2003 crop included seven three-year-old stakes winners last year, including Grade I winners Latent Heat and Wait a While. The second five is headed by Distorted Humor, sire of 20 stakes winners last year, 10 of them graded. Seventh was Awesome Again, sire of no fewer than three Grade I-winning four-year-old fillies in 2006: GI Breeeders= Cup Distaff winner Round Pond; Apple Blossom winner Spun Sugar; and rocket sprinter Dubai Escapade, who won the seven-furlong GI Ballerina. Then came the evidently seriously underrated Langfuhr, who stands for just $25,000; and Red Ransom, sire of G1 Dubai World Cup winner Electrocutionist. Tenth on the 2006 North American general sire list is Stormy Atlantic, last year=s leading sire of two-year-olds while beating out the impressive freshman sire one-two, Street Cry and Johannesburg. Heading the second 10 are Smart Strike, Storm Cat, =s Song, and another pretty seriously underrated sire, Royal Academy, now sire of 77 Northern Hemisphere-sired stakes winners. Besides Street Cry and Johannesburg, three other freshman sires topped the $1-million mark in progeny earnings: Pure Prize, Officer, and Orientate, who definitely finished the year strongly; and Include, as noted above, finished sixth, with progeny earnings just short of $900,000. Among sophomore sires, the top five all ranked in the bottom third of the Top 100 on the general sire list: they were headed by Aptitude ($3.2 million), and also included Broken Vow, Trippi, Point Given, and El Corredor. Among third-year sires, as mentioned Giant=s Causeway turned in quite an impressive performance, big foal crops or not; while the group=s two-three, More Than Ready (24th GSL, $4.7 million) and Yes It=s True (26th GSL, $4.6 million), also turned in strong performances, with 13 stakes winners each last year.
