Trip Report – RBL Uganda - Highlights 2019 2

Tour Summary

This new shortened itinerary, covering only the best birding sites across Uganda in just 12 days, culminated in a list of 430 species which included many of Africa’s most sought after (including a staggering 21 Albertine Rift endemics). Our two most enjoyable sightings were of the beyond mythical Green- breasted Pitta – walk-away views, after a gruelling 6-hour search – and a nesting pair of Grauer’s Broadbill! Other notable species were the impressive Shoebill (3 individuals seen), Papyrus and Black-headed Gonoleks, all three of the realistic Albertine endemic sunbirds (Purple-breasted, Blue- headed, and Regal), Neumann’s Warbler, Red-throated and Fire-crested Alethes, the recently split Willard’s and Mountain (Albertine) Sooty Boubous, White-spotted Flufftail, Ruwenzori Nightjar, Handsome Francolin, Bar-tailed Trogon, the impossible Dusky and Barred Long-tailed , Dwarf , both Uganda and Red-faced Woodland Warblers, Lowland and Mountain Masked Apalises, Nahan’s Partridge and many, many more. Uganda is also the capital of primate diversity in Africa. Species we encountered were the magical Eastern Gorilla and Chimpanzee, Guereza, Central African Red Colobus, the endemic Ugandan Grey-cheeked Mangabey, Olive Baboon, Blue Monkey, and the difficult L’Hoest’s Monkey. Other notable species included Kob, African Elephant, Hippopotamus, African Buffalo, Yellow-backed and Black- fronted Duikers, and Ishasha’s (the southern section of Queen Barred Long-tailed by Daniel Elizabeth National Park) famous tree-climbing Lions. Uganda Keith Danckwerts really is ‘the Pearl of Africa.’ ______

Tour in Detail Uganda is arguably one of Africa’s top birdwatching and game viewing destinations, supporting such a high biodiversity and natural beauty that Winston Churchill wrote “For magnificence, for variety of form and colour, for profusion of brilliant life — bird, , reptile, beast — for vast scale — Uganda is truly ‘the Pearl of Africa’.” Needless to say, one could absolutely smell the excitement in the air as we met at our hotel in Entebbe for an introductory dinner. It was then straight to bed for everyone, though I think few of us managed a full night’s Papyrus Gonolek by Daniel Keith Danckwerts sleep given the levels of excitement! We were up bright and early the following morning for the first official day of the tour. We trucked out through the

bustling outer suburbs of Entebbe and into the community lands where endless villages parted, only to accommodate dense plantain and banana plantations. It was in these areas that we added our first bird species to the tour list: Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill, African Openbill, Woodland, and Striped Kingfishers, Eastern Plantain Eater, and the impressive Great Blue Turaco. Arriving at the Mabamba Swamp, we quickly explored a small area of grassland and mesic savannah. Here we found Fan-tailed Widowbird, the jewel-like Red- headed Lovebird, Yellow-throated Longclaw, African Marsh Harrier, Grey-headed Gull, and the sweet-singing Rufous-naped Lark. We boarded a pair of traditional fishing boats and worked our way towards the centre of the swamp, situated along the very edge of the expansive Lake Victoria. Here, we had a special date planned with a very special bird. It was, of course, the Shoebill – arguably one of the most impressive and pre-historic looking birds in the world. It took longer than Chimpanzee by Daniel Keith Danckwerts expected but we were eventually rewarded with point-blank views of one bird standing motionless at the edge of the swamp, and an additional two individuals seen flying over our boats and landing somewhere deep in the papyrus. Other notable species included the uncommon and nomadic Weyns’s Weaver, Papyrus Gonolek, Goliath and Purple Herons, African Jacana, Palm-nut Vulture, and Swamp Flycatcher. Happy with our success, we returned to shore and immediately transferred to a favourite lunch spot. Here we enjoyed daytime sightings of a Bat Hawk, as well as Black-and-white Casqued Hornbill and Yellow- rumped Tinkerbird. With a fair distance still to travel, we loaded up again and navigated the crazy Kampala traffic sighting Hooded Vulture and the grotesque Marabou Stork in the city centre. Once we reached the open road again, it was straight through to the Luweero Swamp where we found the uncommon (Hartlaub’s) Marsh and Yellow-mantled Widowbirds. Continuing onwards, we sighted several Dark Chanting Goshawks and Long-crested Eagles by the roadside. Kafu Ranches was the next scheduled stop. This renowned site is fantastic for White-crested Turaco – arguably African Skimmer by Daniel Keith Danckwerts the most beautiful member of this endemic African family – and it didn’t take long before we were rewarded with a single bird perched prominently for us. Other interesting species seen were the Western Banded Snake Eagle, White-headed Barbet, Speckled Mousebird, Little Weaver, and aptly named Beautiful Sunbird. We arrived after dark at our destination, the town of Masindi, so we quickly settled in and enjoyed a fabulous dinner. Hundreds of

African Straw-coloured Fruit Bats could be seen (and heard!) flying around our hotel in a fruiting tree. Next day, we drove towards the Royal Mile section of the Budongo Forest. Farm bush en route produced the adorable Black-bellied Firefinch, Heuglin’s Francolin, Red-faced and Whistling Cisticolas, Vieillot’s Black and Compact Weavers, African Yellow Warbler, Red-headed Quelea and a distant pair of Grey Parrots. As we approached the forest, our list grew exponentially. White-thighed Hornbill, Red-tailed Bristlebill, Chocolate-backed and African Pygmy Kingfishers, Yellow-crested Woodpecker, and Purple-headed Starling were just a few of the additions found within the first few minutes. Greenbuls were abundant and we found the Spotted, White- throated, Little, Little Grey, and Yellow- whiskered Greenbuls, as well as the incredibly shy Red-tailed Bristlebill. Throughout the rest of the day, we slowly notched up several other great species. The rare Uganda Woodland Warbler and Lemon- Spur-winged Lapwing by Daniel Keith Danckwerts bellied Crombec proved challenging, given the height of the forest canopy, though we eventually found both species feeding lower as part of a mixed-species foraging flock. This particular flock also contained the glistening Red-headed Malimbe, Chestnut-capped Flycatcher, Ituri Batis, and Dusky Tit. In a different section of the forest, we found a responsive pair of Nahan’s Partridge. A long game of tug-o- war eventually had the male running in circles in the middle of the trail giving rare unobstructed views. A small stream nearby also held the diminutive African Dwarf Kingfisher – Africa’s smallest kingfisher measuring just 8cm between bill and tail – as well Blue-breasted Kingfisher. We chanced our luck with a calling Blue-shouldered Robin-chat and White-spotted Flufftail but were only successful in getting glimpses of the latter. A mixed flock then passed overhead, containing Spotted Greenbul, Crested Malimbe, Narina Trogon, and both Grey-headed and White-breasted Nigritas. The Royal Mile also gave us several interesting primate species including a pair of Chimpanzee, the Red-tailed and Blue Monkeys, and Olive Baboon. A superb Green-breasted Pitta by Daniel Keith Danckwerts introduction to the birds and mammals of the central African rainforest! We returned to Masindi for the evening, where we enjoyed yet another delicious traditional dinner, followed by a much-appreciated early night. The next day was a long travel day, as we slowly made our way south towards Kibale Forest National Park. The drive took the better part of the entire day, broken by several short birding stops. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t in our favour, but we persevered nonetheless and came away with several great birds.

The first stop was in the Murro area where we easily found our main target – the simply gorgeous Brown Twinspot. We watched a male as it fed along the main track, then flew into some dense shrubbery where it called at length. Here we also sighted White-chinned Prinia, Red-headed Quelea, Black Bishop, Black Cuckoo (including both the gabonensis and clamosus subspecies), Fawn-breasted Waxbill, and Black-crowned Waxbill. Carrying on further still, a quick roadside stop gave us Black-and-white Shrike Flycatcher and Black-and-white Mannikin. We eventually arrived in the Sebitole section of the Kibale Forest National Park. An hour in this area gave us the localised Lowland Masked , Joyful Greenbul, Black- throated Apalis, Petit’s Cuckooshrike, Cassin’s Honeybird, and White-chinned Tree-climbing Lion by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Prinia. After what seemed like forever, we eventually arrived at our gorgeous lodge in Kibale National Park in the late afternoon and sighted both Bronzy Sunbird and Yellow-bellied Waxbill as we were checking in. We made sure to have an early night given that the following day was the earliest start of the tour. We were up and walking into the heart of the Kibale Forest before dawn the following morning, in search of the mythical Green-breasted Pitta. Until about 10 years ago, this rare species was only known from a few sporadic sightings at sites in and around the Congo Basin and, until 2005, the species was widely regarded as the least known and most difficult Pitta in the world. Then, in 2005, a group of chimpanzee trackers stumbled upon a pair of pittas in a deep, dark section of the Kibale Forest. The birds didn’t match the illustrations of African Pitta so were believed to have been Green-breasted Pitta. As their observation grew traction, more and more birds were found and indeed, they were Green-breasted Pitta. However, despite this apparent resident population, only a narrow time window exists in which the birds are ‘readily’ seen, as the males display high up in the canopy at dawn to proclaim their territories. Waiting in the forest, listening with every fibre of our being, we hoped to hear such a display. Unfortunately, the silence remained, just silence until it was eventually replaced by a chorus of other birdsong. We changed approach and strategically worked through the undergrowth – hard work indeed – hoping to flush a pitta onto a low perch. Our efforts were rewarded with sightings of Black-fronted Duiker skulking away into a dark thicket, and both Hairy-breasted Barbet and Western Oriole in the tall canopy. It seemed as if we were out of luck with the Black-faced Rufous Warbler by Daniel Keith Danckwerts pitta, so we consoled ourselves with a

tracking experience alongside a troop of Chimpanzees. What an incredible experience – spending an hour in the company of these majestic creatures, one of our closest relatives! We followed the dominant male, several of his preferred females, and their offspring through the forest and enjoyed many sublime photographic opportunities. Just as our time with the chimps was up, we got wind of a pair of Green- breasted Pittas that had just been seen in another section of the forest. Dashing as quickly as we could, we arrived on site to hear the good news that the birds were still feeding quietly in the forest undergrowth. A few anxious minutes passed, and the bird hopped into view – just WOW! What incredible fortune! We spent the next 40 minutes in the company of the bird, watching it preen on a low branch. The sight left us breathless! We headed in for lunch and a much-appreciated afternoon break. Driving back into the forest, later that day, we sighted two other troops of Chimpanzee at the forest Kob by Daniel Keith Danckwerts edge as well as several other new bird species. Among them were the Sooty and African Blue Flycatchers, Yellow-spotted Barbet, Great Blue Turaco, Green-throated and Olive-bellied Sunbirds, Brown-throated Wattle-eye, and both Narrow-tailed and Chestnut-winged Starlings. Kibale Forest is the primate capital of Africa and, in addition to Chimpanzees, we enjoyed sightings of L’Hoest’s and Red-tailed Monkeys, Central African Red Colobus, Ugandan Grey-cheeked Mangabey and Olive Baboon. That evening we embarked on a short night walk, on which we managed to see a pair of African Wood Owls and Great Blue Turaco on its night roost. The following morning was spent at the Bigodi Community Swamp and Forest. This community-run initiative protects a large area of swamp forest and is a crucial stop for any birdwatching group visiting Uganda. We had a superb morning sighting, both the Grey-winged and Red-capped Robin-chats, Shining-blue Kingfisher, White-spotted Flufftail, Joyful and Plain Greenbuls, Ross’s and Great Blue Turacos, Western Nicator, Black-and-white Casqued Hornbills, Purple- headed Starling, a female Superb Sunbird, Green Crombec, Buff-throated Apalis, Black-crowned Waxbill by Daniel Keith Danckwerts White-breasted and Grey-headed Nigritas, Red-bellied Paradise Flycatcher, the uncommon Magpie Mannikin, Brown-crowned Tchagra, Least Honeyguide and Dusky-blue Flycatcher. We returned to our lodge in the Kibale Forest before setting off towards the Queen Elizabeth National Park. Our journey took us in a south-westerly direction and into the rain shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains – sometimes also referred to as the ‘Mountains of the Moon’

since early Greek Philosophers believed that the volume of water flowing out the Nile could only have come from mountains as high as the moon. We passed many scenic crater lakes en route, the most famous of which is represented on the UGX20 000 bank note. A Black Sparrowhawk soaring above the road, together with Palm-nut Vultures, was the only new addition to our ever-expanding bird list on the drive. We arrived at our lodge on the edge of the Queen Elizabeth National Park in the late afternoon and quickly settled into our new accommodations for the evening. A long day followed, starting with a morning safari Black-fronted Duiker by Daniel Keith Danckwerts along the Kasenyi Track, an afternoon cruise on the Kazinga Channel that separates Lake George with Lake Edward, and finally a very successful night drive back to our accommodations. Working through the large network of roads that radiate off the Kasenyi Track in the morning, we found the White-tailed, Red-capped, Rufous-naped and Flappet Larks, both Plain-backed and African Pipits, Temminck’s Courser, Senegal and African Wattled Lapwings, a sublime encounter with a pair of African Crakes, Swamp Nightjar, side-by-side views of the Black-lored and Arrow-marked Babblers, Collared Pratincole, Quailfinch, Kittlitz’s Plover, African Grey Woodpecker, Zitting Cisticola, Bateleur, and Tawny Eagle. Kob (the national of Uganda) were abundant on the open plains, together with African Buffalo, African Elephant, Warthog and small numbers of Bushbuck. A pod of Hippopotamus was also found wallowing in a muddy pool right beside the road – a memorable sighting indeed! After a quick lunch break, we drove out to Mweya where we embarked on an afternoon launch trip on the Kazinga Channel. This was a totally unforgettable trip on which we sighted our first African Skimmers, small numbers of Gull-billed Tern, Pink-backed Pelican, both White-breasted and Reed Cormorants, Black Crake, abundant (numbering >500) Pied Kingfishers, Spur- winged Lapwing, Black-headed Gonolek, Swamp Flycatcher, and Marabou Stork. We also enjoyed seeing large numbers of African Elephant and African Buffalo drinking, Nile Red-chested Sunbird by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Crocodiles slithering back into the water, a single Spotted Hyena prowling for carrion, and pods of Hippopotamus in the shallows. We docked at sunset and waited until it was almost totally dark before we continued back to our lodge. This night excursion proved especially worthwhile as we found small numbers of Square-tailed Nightjar and a large troop of Spotted Hyena. We arrived back at our lodge, enjoyed a fabulous dinner and settled in for the evening.

The next day was yet another travel day as we slowly made our way down through the Ishasha section of Queen Elizabeth National Park before continuing onwards to the Buhoma section of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The drive took the better part of the day, at a slow birding pace, and we sighted several interesting birds and mammals en route. The highlight was perhaps finding Ishasha’s famous pride of tree-climbing lions; it is quite incredible to see a 250kg (500 pounds) Lion sleeping on a horizontal limb of a tree above your vehicle! Other notable species were the striking Red- shouldered Cuckooshrike, Levaillant’s Cuckoo, Purple-banded Sunbird, Chinspot and Western Black-headed Batises, Spot- flanked and White-headed Barbets, Stout Cisticola, Lesser Moorhen, White-winged Widowbird, huge nesting colonies of Red- billed Quelea (Africa’s most abundant bird), Eastern Gorilla by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Western Banded Snake Eagle, Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird, Common Scimitarbill and Black-headed Oriole. We emerged from the southern boundary of Queen Elizabeth National Park and continued onwards to Bwindi, coming to within a few hundred metres of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We arrived at our accommodation in the early evening, with time enough to still find the tricky Tiny Sunbird and watch the mist lift from these incredible mountain forests. The Buhoma section of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is always a highlight of any tour to Uganda, in that it is here that we enjoy a memorable hour with a family group of Eastern Gorillas. This incredible opportunity is without question one of the top wildlife experiences. Hundreds of photos were taken, but nothing can truly capture the thrill of looking at these fascinating , knowing that they’re staring straight back at you. Not forgetting the birds, Buhoma was our first exposure to the Albertine Rift endemics and our most important sightings included the shy and difficult-to-see Neumann’s Warbler, White-browed Crombec, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Red-throated Alethe, and Willard’s Sooty Boubou. Other key species were the localised Mountain Oriole, Elliot’s Woodpecker, Pink- footed Puffback, Many-coloured and Grauer’s Broadbill by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Lühder’s Bushshrike, Grey-winged and White-bellied Robin-chats, Equatorial Akalat, Chestnut Wattle-eye, Tambourine Dove, the rare Chapin’s and White-tailed Blue Flycatchers, Blue-throated Roller, White-headed Wood Hoopoe, Black-faced Rufous Warbler, Bar-tailed Trogon, Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoo, African Goshawk, Abyssinian Thrush,

Toro Olive Greenbul, Green-headed and the long-tailed Bronzy Sunbirds, Waller’s Starling, Cassin’s Hawk-Eagle, Black-billed Weaver, White-tailed Ant Thrush, and Grey Cuckooshrike. Just fantastic! We left Buhoma and drove to a different section of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, via an area known as ‘The Neck.’ This area is at a slightly higher altitude than Buhoma, so supports a slightly different assemblage of species. New species included the rare Lagden’s Bushshrike, Cassin’s Honeybird, and Black-faced Prinia, but we also enjoyed additional looks at Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoo, Red-tailed and Toro Olive Greenbuls, Many-coloured Bushshrike, Common Waxbill, and Black Bee-eater. A little further along, at the forest edge, we located both Streaky and Thick- Pied Kingfisher by Daniel Keith Danckwerts billed Seedeaters, Chubb’s Cisticola, White-tailed Blue Flycatcher, Brown-throated Wattle-eye, Northern Puffback, and Yellow-bellied Waxbill. We arrived at Ruhija with time enough to visit the ‘School Trail.’ Here we found several more of the important Albertine Rift endemics including the Ruwenzori Hill Babbler, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Stripe-breasted Tit, Regal Sunbird, Strange Weaver, and both the Mountain Masked and Ruwenzori Apalises. A few other interesting species appeared in a mixed flock including several African Olive Pigeons, Mountain Yellow Warbler, Tullberg’s Woodpecker, Thick-billed Honeyguide, and Sharpe’s Starling. With dusk starting to fall, we drove to the bamboo zone where we were successful in finding yet another of the Albertine Rift endemics – the lovely Handsome Francolin. Western Tinkerbird was also new in these highland forests. Temperatures were dropping quickly, we returned to our hotel for the evening and some much-needed rest in time for the long hike the following morning. Next day was a very much-anticipated outing, in search of beautiful Grauer’s Broadbill. This inexplicably rare bird is known from just three sites in Africa, Ruhija being the only accessible one with the other two sites located in the unsafe areas of eastern DRC. Still, it requires a long and steep hike and this absolute mega is by no means guaranteed. We were incredibly fortunate to find a nest with two adults in attendance. We enjoyed the company of these rare birds for well over an hour, watching as they repeatedly bought insect prey back to the chicks in the nest. Red-headed Lovebird by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Gorgeous! The same valley gave use Red- throated Alethe, the shy Grauer’s Warbler, localised Grauer’s Rush Warbler, White-browed Crombec, Red-faced Woodland Warbler, Stripe-breasted Tit, Ruwenzori and Mountain Masked Apalises, Blue-

headed and Purple-breasted Sunbirds, Regal Sunbird, Mountain (Albertine) Sooty Boubou, Yellow-eyed Black Flycatcher, and the scarce and little-known Dwarf Honeyguide – all Albertine Rift endemics. Other highlights included the Black-billed Turaco, African Olive Pigeon, Black-faced Prinia, Yellow-streaked and Olive-breasted Greenbuls, Yellow-billed Barbet, Waller’s and Stuhlman’s Starlings, Brown-capped Weaver, White-tailed Blue Flycatcher, and the rare and highly sought-after Barred Long-tailed Cuckoo. On the mammal front, we enjoyed a sublime encounter with a Black-fronted Duiker that walked straight towards us along the trail and remained totally unconcerned by our presence until it was just 4 metres away! We returned to the lodge for a much-needed afternoon break before heading up into the bamboo zone once again. We were successful in finding Handsome Francolin near the top of the road, before waiting at a stakeout for Rwenzori Nightjar. As darkness fell, a single nightjar flew straight over our heads and disappeared into the forest beyond. A fitting end to our best day of birding! Handsome Francolin by Daniel Keith Danckwerts Next day was, unfortunately, the last day of the tour and we were unable to do much birdwatching as we needed to cover a huge distance back to Entebbe before catching our return flights home. Several interesting species were seen on the drive including Grey Crowned Crane, Long-crested Eagle, White- throated Bee-eater, Great Blue Turaco, and the iconic Lilac-breasted Roller. We arrived in the late afternoon and quickly freshened up before transferring to the airport and bid each other farewell as we parted ways. On behalf of myself, Livingstone and Hillary – I’d like to convey a huge and incredibly heart-felt thank you to all the clients of the trip for making it such a fantastic all-round trip.
