✓✓Over the next a4Dr iveyears our Local Health District CRONULLA will also receive at least 773 new staff, including 116 doctors and 502 nurses and midwives. ✓✓In 2017 the NSW government completed the $63m Sutherland Hospital redevelopment, which included a new emergency department, additional inpatient beds, and support spaces. ✓✓Last year the NSW government completed the Caringbah Ambulance Superstation, part of the $150m Ambulance Infrastructure Strategy. The NSW government is slashing the weekly Opal cap from $63.20 to $50 from 1 July. This will save, for example, up to $563 per year for commuters from Cronulla or Woolooware to the city or from Caringbah or Miranda to North Sydney.

2 CRONULLA UPDATE / JUNE 2019 CRONULLA UPDATE / JUNE 2019 3 Sutherland to Cronulla bike/foot path It’s full peddle ahead for the “SCATL” – the Sutherland to Cronulla Active Transport Link, an 11km off-road shared bike and foot path.

The NSW government has started building stage 1 (Sutherland-Kirrawee), with completion expected within 9 months. The rest of the SCATL will come on line in stages from 2021. Overall completion is targeted for 2023. There’ll be extensive community consultation on the Kirrawee-Cronulla route. This will be part of a wider network which includes the Woolooware Bay path, which was co-funded by the NSW government and Sutherland SCATL announcement with Transport and Roads Shire Council. Gannons Road bridge replacement and widening NSW government work to widen the Gannons Road rail bridge has started.

The major work is scheduled for mid-year. Some road and track disruptions will take place during this time.

Sutherland Shire Council says it expects to complete the road widening underneath this year. This will allow 2 lanes in each direction plus bike and pedestrian access, With Transport and Roads Minister Andrew Constance to fix a notorious bottleneck. at early Gannons Road work

Barren Sutherland Shire streets will benefit from over 2,800 trees being planted by Sutherland Shire Council with a $620,000+ grant from the NSW government.

It’s part of the Five Million Trees for Greater Sydney initiative (5milliontrees.nsw.gov.au) – planting 5 million trees in Sydney by 2030.

More tree canopy means more shade, cooler suburbs, more habitats for wildlife, lower carbon emissions, prettier suburbs and even higher property values. With Open Space and Parklands Commissioner Fiona Morrison

Hungry Point Reserve

Hungry Point Reserve Cronulla is now open to the public.

The NSW government is funding a spectacular clifftop walk around the reserve, connecting the Cronulla Esplanade with Darook Park. At lower tides people can walk along the Gunnamatta Bay beach to complete an entire loop of the South Cronulla peninsula. The NSW government has invested over With the Hungry Point board $11 million upgrading the Royal National Park Coast Track (which runs from Otford to Bundeena); has already upgraded the Cape Baily Track in Kamay Botany Bay National Park; and (with the federal government) is funding new ferry wharves at Kurnell and La Perouse. This will create a great walk from Otford to South Head (with 2 ferry legs Bundeena-Cronulla and Kurnell-La Perouse).

Shirley has been a committee member of the Caringbah RSL Sub Branch since 2005 and President for the past five years. She has a long history with the defence forces, having served as an army nurse. Walk the Walls is coming to Cronulla from 8 to 10 November.

Co-funded by the NSW government and Sutherland Shire Council, it will build on the success of Caringbah last year, turning grimy grotty graffiti ridden walls into stunning street art.

Police update

The safety and security of our local community has been boosted with 9 new police recruits joining the Sutherland Shire Police Area Command in May.

Policing is a high priority for the NSW government, with our state having some of the lowest crime rates in a generation.

Recorded crime rates for the Sutherland Shire across the 17 major categories remained stable or trending down over the 2 year period to December 2018.
