St. Peter’s Episcopal Church The Third Sunday of Easter Lewes, Delaware April 15, 2018, 10:00 a.m., Holy Eucharist, Rite II

OPENING VOLUNTARY Meditations on R osedale Andrew Clarke (b. 1942) (“Come, risen Lord, and deign to be our guest”)

* HYMN IN PROCESSION Awake, arise, lift up your voice The Hymnal 1982, # 212

Bishop ☩ Alleluia, Christ is risen. People The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. There is one Body and one Spirit; People There is one hope in God’s call to us; Bishop One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism; People One God and Father of all.

* THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Bishop The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Bishop Let us pray. O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. A men.

FIRST LESSON Acts 3:12–19 Reader A reading from the Acts of the Apostles. Peter addressed the people, “You Israelites, why do you wonder at this, or why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk? The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our ancestors has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate, though he had decided to release him. But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer given to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And by faith in his name, his name itself has made this man strong, whom you see and know; and the faith that is through Jesus has given him this perfect health in the presence of all of you. And now, friends, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers. In this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, that his Messiah would suffer. Repent therefore, and turn to God so that your sins may be wiped out.” Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

* Indicates the People stand, as able. ☩ Indicates the People may make the sign of the cross.

PSALM 4 C um invocarem John Bradford Bohl (b. 1981) The Choir sings the psalm.

Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness : thou hast set me at liberty when I was in trouble; have mercy upon me, and hearken unto my prayer. O ye sons of men, how long will ye blaspheme mine honour : and have such pleasure in vanity, and seek after leasing? Know this also, that the L ORD hath chosen to himself the man that is godly: when I call upon the L ORD, he will hear me. Stand in awe, and sin not : commune with your own heart, and in your chamber, and be still. Offer the sacrifice of righteousness : and put your trust in the L ORD. There be many that say : Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up : the light of thy countenance upon us. Thou hast put gladness in my heart : since the time that their corn and wine and oil increased. I will lay me down in peace, and take my rest : for it is thou, L ORD, only, that makest me dwell in safety.

SECOND LESSON 1 John 3:1–7 Reader A reading from the first letter of John. See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is. And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Everyone who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. People Thanks be to God.

* SEQUENCE HYMN That Easter Day with joy was bright The Hymnal 1982, # 193

* GOSPEL Luke 24:36b–48 Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus himself stood among the disciples and said to them, “Peace be with you.” They were startled and terrified, and thought that they were seeing a ghost. He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why

2 do doubts arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While in their joy they were disbelieving and still wondering, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate in their presence. Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. OFFERTORY ANTHEM P eter Hurford (b. 1930) Magdalen, cease from sobs and sighs; wipe the teardrops from off thine eyes: Simon the leper’s feast is o’er; Christ today needs thy nard no more. Now thousand times may’st thou rejoice; now thousand times uplift thy voice. Alleluia. Magdalen, bind upon thee now garland of gladness o’er thy brow: banished afar is grief and pain: welcome is sunshine after rain. For Jesu Christ the world hath freed, triumphing over death indeed. Alleluia. –tr. G.R. Woodward (1848–1934)

* PRESENTATION HYMN O friends, in gladness let us sing Lasst uns erfreuen

* THE GREAT THANKSGIVING E ucharistic Prayer D

7 It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing,

* SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS

We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation. Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him

8 who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.

When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

All W e praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God.

Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us ☩, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. Remember Justin, the Archbishop of Canterbury, Michael, our Presiding Bishop, Kevin, our Bishop, and all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember all who have died ☩ in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light.

And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and for ever. A MEN.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
