It was upgraded to a Polytechnic in 1986, however, operated as a Second-Cycle Institution until 1993 when it was upgraded into a fully-fledged Tertiary Institution by the enactment of the PNDC Law 321. In 2016, Ho Polytechnic was upgraded to the status of Technical University with the H T U @ mandate of awarding degrees, diplomas, certificates and other qualifications to the highest level possible in engineering, science and technology based disciplines, technical and vocational education and training, applied arts and related disciplines.

A colourful graduation ceremony was held on Friday, 10th August, 2018 at 2:00 pm in the Nkulenu Demonstration Restaurant of the University where the INP-HB students and their supervisors were awarded English Proficiency Certificates and HTU @ 50 souvenirs. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor thanked the HTU− INP-HB Coordinating Committee in charge of this exchange programme and the INP Officials that came with the students. He congratulated the students for availing themselves to learn the English language. In a closing remark, Prof. Ben Q. Honyenuga stated that, HTU is on the move towards the world of Development and Internationalisation and is unstoppable. The University is the sub-region reference point for breaking down the language barrier. He wished them well in their future endeavours and a safe journey to their destination. Dr. Christopher Amehoe, the Interim Registrar also expressed his joy at the level of competence of the students in the speaking of the English language over the two weeks period. Dr. Privat Sé (Dean, School of Business, INP-HB) on behalf of The Director General of INP-HB, Prof. Koffi N’guessan expressed his profound gratitude to HTU for accommodating and teaching their students. He also indicated that, indeed their collaboration with HTU is unique as compared to collaborations they have with other sister tertiary institutions.
